Ray Porter is my favorite!
Sanctity and Sin: The Collected Poems and Prose Poems of Donald Wandrei
By a key original member of the Lovecraft Circle and co-founder of Arkham House Publishing.

Look at you Chris, classing up the joint! I haven't read any poetry in a long while now. The last one I tried was beautiful, but it was during the start of COVID and it just didn't keep my attention.
Char, “classing up the joint” is what I do. 🤪I’ve always read (and written) a lot of poetry, but recently I’ve gotten into vintage horror/dark fantasy verse of the Clark Ashton Smith / H.P. Lovecraft variety. Not sure why. It never interested me before, but now I’m into it.
I have enjoyed a lot of Lovecraft's work, in spite of the blatant racism of some of it. I think I love the work of authors writing in that universe more than I liked Lovecraft himself, if that makes any sense. I haven't read as much Clark Ashton Smith as I would like.
I picked up the entire collected fantasies Night Shade Books issued several years ago and bogged down in the second volume. I think it's easy to overdose on Smith, maybe more so than with Lovecraft. Still, when he was hitting on all cylinders, he was the better writer and I base that on the Ballantine Sign of the Unicorn edition of Zothique which was a revelation for me, a terrific, exotic, beautifully written collection of dark fantasy stories replete with ghouls and necromancers.
Char, not only does it make sense, it’s a position many people hold. (My students always seem to like “Lovecraftian” stories better than actual Lovecraft stories.) I love Lovecraft myself, but I totally get people who don’t like his ornate style or his racism. As to the latter, well, I think it’s up to each individual reader what to do or not do with that. The basic collection for Clark Ashton Smith is The Return Of The Sorcerer: The Best Of Clark Ashton Smith. He was a fine prose stylist and the book is worth reading, though there are other Lovecraft Circle writers I like better.

I’m willing to say it again, but it’ll cost you this time.
LOLI'm starting
for our author invite read. I'm still reading
and I'm listening to one of our group reads:
Years ago, I bumped into Zothique and Hyperborea in a used bookstore, snatched them up, and devoured them. Highly recommended!
Well I started out with five books and now down to these three:Lords of the Deep
Megalodon In Paradise
and
The Family Man
After Dark
The second Silver John novel. Manly Wade Wellman, Appalachia, the otherworldly Shonokins…
This is the Good Old Stuff.
Today I listened to another story in Heroic Hearts & started The Scavenger Door (Finder Chronicles #3)!
Currently reading
and
I just finished
Monster of Elendhaven was quite a delightful read and has made its way to my top 3, though it doesnt quite fit into horror.
Heroes against the forces of pulpy darkness…
Frost by Donald Wandrei (I.V. Frost & his intrepid assistant Jean Moray)
The Selected Stories of Manley Wade Wellman, Vol. 5: Owls Hoot in the Daytime, and Other Omens (collected stories of Silver John)

Really?! I loved Fantasticland so I will definitely pick up the audio book when I'm in the mood for a reread :)

I need to try this!
While waiting for The Final Girl Support Group to come in the mail, I've been reading The Dark Country, which has been on my shelf for years. Etchison was a powerful short story writer and I should have read this long ago.

Well, I am trying to... The book consists of imagescans/reproductions instead of proper text and those are hardly readable on both a Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle App. Plus, it seems the pages are out of order.
