I am just starting Redemption Ark this week (so I can listen to the audiobook I checked out from my library before it expires). I wouldn't mind buddy reading the rest of the series, if you want to dive in this week. :) I also have a bunch of other Reynolds novels on my tbr stack for this season.

I'm changing this to S.L. Viehl's Stardoc series and I just started the Recluce series and don't think I'll finish it by the end of the year. This series is 10 books and I'm on book 6 right now

message 112: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments I'd love to hear what you think of Stardoc - I loved the old Sector General series about a space hospital for aliens, and I'm curious about this one.

I don't like Rebel Ice, but that seems very common amongst readers. So far, it's OK, but rape and torture occur in the books, so if those are a turn off, I'd recommend skipping it.

message 114: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Finished Joe Abercrombie's Age of Madness series for Favorite Author giving me two columns. Two more squares to go:

BIPOC Author: Sabaa Tahir's An Ember in the Ashes series

Duology: Oliver Pötzsch Faust series

to complete the board

What did you think, CB? I've just read the first three, and although I enjoyed the first couple, the third one...not so much...

message 117: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments They're readable but not fantastic. The book I had problems with was the 6th book: Rebel Ice.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1221 comments CBRetriever wrote: "They're readable but not fantastic. The book I had problems with was the 6th book: Rebel Ice."

I just read a few reviews about that one. Given that book three wasn't a lot of fun, I think perhaps I might pause in the series. There are many other books I want to read.

message 119: by Tamara (new)

Tamara | 271 comments I'm going slowly, slowly, on my challenge. Currently reading book 2.5 of The Stormlight Archive (of which I think there are 4 main books at the moment). I'm not sure how far I'll get this year - certainly going to read 3, and maybe 3.5 in that time. 4 is definitely a possibility. This will probably go in my 'longer series' slot - unless I read them all this year; then it will be the binge-read.

I found and read the most recent (#7) of the Green Rider books, Winterlight. Is there a 🐎 to win?? 😊
Would this fit in 'Fresh off the Press'? (Published late last year - can't remember if this needs to be from the current year or not).

Gabi | 3441 comments Tamara wrote: "Would this fit in 'Fresh off the Press'? (Published late last year - can't remember if this needs to be from the current year or not)."

Yes, it does. In the subtext in the first post it says it has to be from 2020, 2021 or 2022.

message 121: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments "Is there a horse to win?" For land creatures on the cover you get a tiger emoji (for year of the tiger) but you can definitely have a horsey instead. (Cannot post them at the moment because I'm on mobile.)

Thanks, Eva. I'll take the horse! 🐎🐴 Not sure which one. Any horses are good 💙💚

Olga, how did you find Mort? (As in, what did you think). I've read the 2nd in that mini-series about him, and liked it, but am not generally a fan of Terry Pratchett's books, although I have liked a few. I think I like this character, though, so it makes me think about reading the other 2 in the mini-series.

message 127: by Llyren (last edited Jul 19, 2022 11:31AM) (new)

Llyren | 37 comments I am overdue for an update and I actually have a few books to add:

Robert Jordan - The Wheel of Time (4) - The Shadow Rising gives me the 🗿 for the ruins of Rhuidean.

Since I have now read the final Wayfarers novel Becky Chambers - The Galaxy, and the Ground Within, I'll use that one for the stars and switch The Theft of Sunlight in order to get the 🐱‍👤. Additionally, it fills my "first book was 5 stars" bingo field.

I caught up with Monstress by rereading Monstress, Vol. 4: The Chosen and reading Monstress, Vol. 5: Warchild and Monstress, Vol. 6: The Vow but I'm not counting those for anything.

Arkady Martine - A Desolation Called Peace gives me the Science-Fiction bingo field (and my first bingo, a 🦊!) as well as the 👸🤴for the current and the young emperor to be.

So for now, I'm missing three bingo fields and the first bonus.

message 142: by Beth (last edited Nov 22, 2022 09:49AM) (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments My series reading was unimpressive this year. I started far more series than I continued or finished. Though I am pretty proud of finishing a full series within 2022.

Started:
(doesn't include "one and done," series I started and decided not to continue. they were all group reads.)
1. Rockton by Kelley Armstrong
2. Project Arcadia by Mishell Baker
3. Pingkang Li Mysteries by Jeannie Lin
4. Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
5. Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter by Reia
6. Anita Blake by Laurell K Hamilton
7. Crown of Stars by Kate Elliott

Continued, not yet finished
1. Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir
(haven't read Nona yet)
2. Log Horizon by Mamare Touno
3. Blandings by P.G. Wodehouse

Finished
1. Murderbot by Martha Wells (to date)
(I only read a single novella in 2022, but hey, it counts)
2. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System by Mo Xang Tong Xiu
(this is the one I read start to finish this year)
3. I Swear I Won't Bother You Again by Reina Soratani
(seems to be on hiatus after two volumes)

I don't see myself making significant progress on anything else this year, but if I do, I'll edit this post. :)

✅ C1 Fresh Off the Press: Locklands

✅ A2 ★★★★★ First Book: was going to be The Nine but instead I read The Golden Enclaves to round out that series.

✅ A3 BIPOC Author: Bloodmarked

And congrats to you, Rebecca: 7 series completed is still a LOT! 🎉👏

I need to hurry and come up with a new bingo board for 2023... Would it be good to make it bigger and more varied? That way, people could go for specific rows or columns they like, but a full board would be harder. What are your opinions?

Agree. (I totally ate dirt for my challenges this year but I am gearing up for next year!) I think this challenge is nigh perfect the way it is currently set up. Finding a series to fill each prompt that also has books to fill the individual badges is enjoyably crunchy, but totally doable. More board would be pretty overwhelming, especially if one is doing other challenges that require non-series reading.

If anyone needs more series challenge, they could start repeating previous years, since you've kindly given us new prompts each year, Eva.

message 149: by Llyren (new)

Llyren | 37 comments I also usually just about manage the whole board, so a larger one would probably be quite challenging.
I loved the "collectable"-feature we had for the badges last year - that was a wonderful additional motivation to read more sequels :-)

message 150: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1776 comments I like the 3X3 board, especially since folks might read more than one book per square. I also love collecting the bonus emojis and other emoji prizes.

I have really enjoyed this challenge the last couple years, it has helped push me to work on and even finish several series.

Maybe for variety, there could be a wild card square? or pick a favorite prompt from the past 2 years?
