Eva | 968 comments Hi everyone!

As promised, here's the thread for your (unofficial, I'm not a mod!) 2022 series challenge, which is all about helping you make progress with and finish more series. Villains will be vanquished, worlds will be saved, and epic finales will be seen. 🐱‍🏍
There is a bingo, bonus challenges, and tiny, imaginary emoji prizes. 🥳

A) The 2022 Series Bingo (referring to whole series)
Series-Bingo-2022

(Explanations:
*Favorite Author = written by one of your faves
*Fresh off the Press = latest book in this series came out in 2020, 2021, or 2022
*Binge-Read= you read the whole series from start to finish in 2022 - easiest with a duology)

Each filled-in bingo row gives you a fox 🦊
Each filled-in column gives you a wolf 🐺
Each diagonal gives you a racoon 🦝

Fill in the whole bingo board by finishing or catching up with one series for each of the bingo prompts (no doubling up), and you get a golden trophy: 🏆

B) Bonus challenges (referring to individual books)

If one of the books in a series you're reading fulfills one of the following prompts, you can earn more cute emoji rewards! This time, even the first book in a series counts for this, but each book can only count for one bonus.

1) Non-human land creature/animal on the cover or in the title: 🐯 (2022 is the year of the water tiger)
2) Water/any other liquid on the cover or in the title: 🌊
3) A flower/plant on the cover or in title: 🌱
4) Wings/flying creature/cloud on the cover or in title: 🐝

5) Book or cover features a scientist/researcher/scholar: 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬
6) Book or cover features a rogue/thief/pirate/assassin: 🐱‍👤
7) Book or cover features an aristocrat/royalty/emperor/empress: 👸🤴
8) Book or cover features a physician/doctor/healer: 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

9) Sun/moon/star(s) on cover or in title: 🌞
10) Book has LGBTQ+ representation: 🌈
11) Fire/flame on cover or in title: 🔥
12) Book or cover features ruins, a mask or a statue 🗿

If you collect all 12 bonus emojis, you get a medal: 🏅
(Earn an extra sparkle ✨ if you used only sequels for fulfilling this challenge.)

Participants who complete both the bingo board and all 12 bonus challenges by the end of 2022 get a gold medal: 🥇 and much acclaim and applause!

Please feel free to post your thoughts, the series you plan to read, and how it's going. I hope you'll have a wonderful and successful reading year in 2022 and that many long and short series will see some progress!

Nicol | 505 comments YAY! I was just going to do this years with different books for next year but this is WAY more exciting. Thank you for doing this.

CBRetriever | 6113 comments 1st Book was 5 stars = my rating or someone else's rating? I can't find any books in my TBR pile that are 5 star

and Goodreads or Amazon rating?

message 4: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) Yay, amazing! I actually have three series that are only missing one book or two to finish so I'm getting some emoticons this year!

Eva | 968 comments CBRetriever wrote: "1st Book was 5 stars = my rating or someone else's rating? I can't find any books in my TBR pile that are 5 star and Goodreads or Amazon rating?"

Your own rating of the first book in that series. If you then finish or catch up with the series this book belongs to you can fill in that bingo square. :-) (It doesn't matter when you read the first book.)

Myriel | 48 comments Woohoo, the new series challenge is here 🤩

Count me in! 😁

message 7: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1776 comments Yay, I'm looking forward to finishing some more series! I'm currently reading my last book needed to fill the 2021 bingo board.

Thank you so much Eva for setting up the bingo board and bonus emoji quest!

Gabi | 3441 comments Thank you, Eva. I think this is the only challenge I will actually be doing in 2022.

message 10: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments So happy that people are going to join again next year! 🥰

message 11: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments A question: the bingo card still is for finished series. So fresh off the press must be a series where the final volume was/is released 2020-2022 - correct?

message 12: by Marie (new)

Marie I think I am going to join this challenge. I have lots of series that needs completing. I have a question though - what does BIPOC Author mean? I am new here so this is my first time joining challenges here.

Also I have another question - sorry - I actually just started a fantasy series and reading the first book - will that series count toward the bingo challenge if I am in the middle of it now? Or do I need to start reading the books next year?

message 13: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments Gabi wrote: "A question: the bingo card still is for finished series. So fresh off the press must be a series where the final volume was/is released 2020-2022 - correct?"

Correct, it's about the latest release or final volume. :-)

"what does BIPOC Author mean?"

The acronym BIPOC refers to black, indigenous, and other people of color - so if you finish (or catch up with) a series written by a person of color, you can fill in that field.

"will that series count toward the bingo challenge if I am in the middle of it now?"

Yes, of course! This challenge is meant to help people finish the series they've started, so both series you've already started and new ones you start in 2022 both count. :-)

Thank you so much for the explanations!

Very cool! I am in for this one! :)

message 16: by Marie (new)

Marie One more question - lol - do we just pick a spot on this thread to do the challenge or do we need to make a personal thread to keep track of the books?

message 17: by Kirsi (new)

Kirsi | 138 comments I think I'll join, too. I was just thinking about reading goals for next year and concluded I really need to wrap up at least a few of the gazillion series I've started.

Me again ... (LOL, you are bombarded with questions from everybody now, Eva) - this sounds like I could go with a middle book as well if the final book won't be released until somehwere in the future - do I see this correct?

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Marie wrote: "One more question - lol - do we just pick a spot on this thread to do the challenge or do we need to make a personal thread to keep track of the books?"

either or use a spread sheet to keep track of them

message 20: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments @Marie: you're welcome to post in this thread throughout the year to keep track if you like. It's best to keep adding new posts so that other people will get notifications that something has changed and can applaud your progress.

@Gabi: yes, if the series is still ongoing and hasn't been released completely yet, catching up with its current state is enough for this challenge.

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Looks good, Eva. Thanks for putting season two together for us.

"Binge reading" being over the year is appreciated by me who has a tough time reading two series books one after the other. :)

I have ideas for both BIPOC author and Fresh off the Press, so that would be a good way to get a diagonal going.

message 24: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Board:

Trilogy: M.R. Carey's Rampart Trilogy

Science Fiction: Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch Series

Fresh Off The Press: Michelle Sagara's The Wolves of Elantra series

1st Book Was 5 stars: waiting to find the 5 star book

Favorite Author: Joe Abercrombie's The Age of Madness series

Fantasy: Garth Nix's Abhorsen series

BIPOC Author: Sabaa Tahir's An Ember in the Ashes series

Duology: Oliver Pötzsch Faust series

Binge-Read: L.M. Modesitt's Saga of Recluce series - this will take a long, long time as it's 18 books

message 25: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments The series that are on my radar for next year are the Malazan series, the series starting with Senlin Ascends, The Witcher (will be a monthly read in another group) and the accompanying short story series to Shadows of the Apt. Somehow I have to press them into the prompts :D and then have a look if I can fill some other prompts (or if I've already overdone myself with Malazan)

message 26: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments I really enjoyed the Shadows of the Apt short stories. It was nice to get a focus on some of the minor characters.

Roo (capernex) | 38 comments yay!! so excited that this is back! this is the one challenge that i managed to complete last year!

message 28: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments CB's mentioning Wolves of Elantra makes me wonder how series with subseries, or series of series (i.e. Hobb's Elderlings) are handled for this challenge? "However we want them to" would be a fine answer. :D

message 29: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments Yes, however you want them to. :-)

message 32: by Tamara (last edited Jan 07, 2022 12:30AM) (new)

Tamara | 271 comments 👏

I like 'Fresh off the press'! This will probably be either 'Cytonic' in the 'Skyward' series, or the end of 'The Invisible Library' series. Unless the next book in the 'Scholomance' series comes out this year.

'Duology' is also a nice addition. I'll have to look for one, as I'm not aware of any yet that I'm considering.

'Binge read' is fun. If I'm really committed, this could be 'The Stormlight Archive' - which could also fit into 'Fresh off the press' - although I read the first book in December. But who's counting? 😉

Thanks for your ideas, Eva. I might do a combination of last year's and this year's cards, to make it most relevant to the kind of books I read.

message 33: by Leticia (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) Cytonic and the 8th Invisible Library book are in my TBR too. One of those will be my choice for 'Fresh off the press' surely.
