I have thought about starting a new challenge, but I really like some of the books I've already read and love the idea of having the best book on my list. Of course there are two spreadsheets involved! I have a spreadsheet for the books I've already read, and one for some options for some of the countries where I haven't read any books there yet. So many countries where I haven't read a 5 star book yet - such a fun project ahead! :-)

January Reads:I pretty much focused on series books that are either Fantasy or set in the United States. The only book I read that was primarily set out of the United States was Beautiful World, Where Are You which was set in Ireland. It was not my favorite, so it will not replace P.S. I Love You. :-)

Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman - portions of this book take place in Afghanistan and Washington State, but I counted it for Arizona this year.
People We Meet on Vacation - So, I'm counting it for Croatia, because it was bugging me to have the same book for both Croatia and Malta. I'm hoping to read another book about Croatia that I will hopefully rate higher (Girl at War), so this exchange is really just a place holder. The book is about a travel writer, so there are sections about Ohio, California (Palm Springs and San Francisco), New York, Florida (Sanibel Island), Tennessee (Nashville), Colorado (Vail), Canada (Vancouver Island in British Columbia), Italy (Tuscany region) and Croatia (Dubrovnik and Brac).

Antarctica - 20000 Leagues Under the Sea - Most of the action was at sea, but there was a chapter in Papua New Guinea and Antarctica. Other places got a passing mention, including Ceylon, which would have given me a new country, Sri Lanka, but I just didn't think there was enough activity there for it to count.

I couldn't agree more and will have to check out that region.
I just did the basic 80. If I complete that, then I will move on to the full list of countries.

I already had the 80, so I'm just slowly working the list.
I know what you mean about reading the full list of countries. I want to, but I'm not sure I will. It sounds impressive, but it really isn't if you start reading travel guides or uninteresting books to you just to have a book set in that country. I'm not much of a romance reader and so when my friend read and asked if I wanted to borrow a romance set in San Marino, I looked at the back blurb, was uninspired, and said, "No thanks." I get excited when there's a good book I want to read from somewhere interesting, but I'm not going to try and finish this list by reading books that don't appeal to me. If that makes any sense. :-)

I would recommend both A Fish Caught in Time and Giovanni's room, and hesitantly caution you about The Spanish Love Deception. We read it as a buddy read. I didn't think the chapters in the United States were very well written, so the first third of the novel is very very clunky and awkward. The book got better once the characters went to Spain. But the author's idea of an American work setting is so far removed from my actual work setting and the way people interact that I could hardly power through it. Alissa felt the same way, but I think Beth liked it a bit more than we did.
I'll duly put the first two higher on the list than the Spanish Love Deception. I'm busy reading If Beale Street Could Talk which is my first by James Baldwin, so I'll definitely try to get to Giovanni's Room soon.

I really liked his writing style, maybe better than I liked the plot line.
