I was just about to ask the same question! There's a long book I want to read for Trim that TBR and I've already started it (would probably start from the beginning again anyways though) but I just know it'll take me over a month to read.
But if we need to start and finish within the same month, it's probably not a good candidate for this game.

Oops! I'm being to realize I'm likely to have a problem later in the year.

If (as is highly likely for me) I end up carrying a number of books over in the early months, I may well get to the point where there are not enough qualifying books on my TBR. I probably won't have that many books which were either
"1. added to TBR in that month (before 2022), OR
2. published in that month (any year)."

Reading an average of 6.5 books per month doesn't sound hard, but even finding 20-30 eligible books in a given month may be very hard.

And suggestions for how to deal with that if/when it happens?

Ok, so, I dreamed this just before I woke up this morning lol
I guess it just literally hit upon me that we could use this GR feature. I use it only occasionally so I kinda forgot about it.

There's nothing I can do if you haven't got books added to you TBR is certain months prior to 2022... BUT for books published in certain month of any year, you could refer to this:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/popula...

Or you can access this from
>Browse
>New Releases
>More New Releases (near bottom right, underneath a bunch of book covers)

On this page, you'll see drop down menus for which you can choose which year and/or month. Unfortunately, you can only view per month for current, last, & next year. This is so frustrating!! You used to be able to view more years :/

Please do be careful though as these are Popular New Releases but also refers to new edition so please check book's page for original published month.

Another thing I can think of is that sometimes there are listopias... I'll see if I can find some & post here.

If you search for month & year, you may be able found lists such as this:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

And for this particular challenge, we're not limiting ourselves that were already on our TBR at the beginning of the year? That makes it easier.

Yes and No, Susan,

1. added to TBR in that month (before 2022) <--this limits on TBR

OR

2. published in that month (any year). <--this doesn't

The total books for the challenge is 78 so dividing by 12 months (or 11 months if you start in February - that's if you didn't hit any January books) will give you 6.5 or 7.09 - I rounded down but yes, either way there'd be extra to read in Dec... it's my "average" monthly goal though hopefully I'll hit some extra in months before December.

message 76: by Ines (new)

Ines (innit13) | 59 comments So one thing I considered for some books but forgot about for others: Planning sequels. That I hadn't added to my TBR yet, of course.

I *know* that usually people have to wait 6-18 months for a sequel but I'm so bad at remembering and getting back into it that it's better for me to read all parts in one go. Well. Part 2 of The Book of Dust was published in October. I could have waited to read both in October but forgot and read it now. On the other hand, Part 3 doesn't even have a publishing date yet, so spreading it out might actually be better.

In any case, definitely something I need to consider when I decide which month (TBR or pub) to pick when reading a series.

LOL - I totally understand what you mean, Ines!! There's a trilogy for which I debated what to do with too

That's awesome, Tien!

I definitely have to be more aware of that. I rarely add a sequel before having read the previous installment but maybe I should consider it to give me more options next year!

Wait, so is it allowed to finish a book in the following month?

I have to admit, I did a bit of cheating and counted a book that I finished today (cheated on the read date too). Life got inbetween and it still feels like January to me anyways.
The game is supposed to motivate me to read more books, not make me frustrated about the difference of one day in the calendar, so I'm counting it ^^'

I checked this out with Tien in Post 51 above, Ines. Her reply in Post 52 said that we should aim to read books completely within the relevant month. But, hey, what's a day or two between friends?? :)

LOL - look, I'm a bit more strict on myself... I'm not checking through your list so really, it's all up to you. I don't want to make the challenge so strict that you're not having fun since that's not helping at all with your TBR ;p

message 91: by Bea (new)

Bea | 5304 comments Mod
I look at it this way. I get a large portion of my books from the library and am not exactly in control of when they arrive. If I start them during the month they count. I'd love to finish them each month, but it is not always possible.

message 92: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1385 comments Question about the rollover... is the amount to be rolled over to the next month just the balance of the month's original goal, or the rolled over goal from the previous month? See below -

January goal: 12 - read 3; 9 rollover to Feb
February goal: 11 + 9 rollover = 20; read 5 - rollover 6 (11 minus 5) or 15 (20 minus 5) to March?

Cool that it works for you, Tien. For me, it's nice to have these rules (and I really need them!) but if I occasionally bend them to keep things fun it still helps me towards my goal. Like Lagullande said, what's a day or two between friends ;) I don't plan on making it a habit though. I need deadlines!

I think I'll put the true date on my read shelf then, dunnoh why I felt like I had to XD

As far as I've understood, you have to read 78 books all year. So anything that rolls over from January will also roll over to March. I'm not sure if that was your question or if you were asking about how we're supposed to write this down. I'm guessing it's original goal + all the rollovers.

So for you that's:
February goal 11 + 9 rollover
March goal: 10 + 15 rollover

What Ines said, LaurLa.

Thanks, Ines :)

LaurLa | 1385 comments Thanks... I guess I hadn't actually done the math myself even though I saw where we decided an average of 7 a month was the magic number to keep the later months easier to manage. I freaked a little with 19 already for February.... just have to keep on keepin' on I guess!

I know the numbers (after rollover) is a little bit daunting but remember the goal in later months are quite small (1 in December) so if you just may average out for each month at the end of the year.

For anyone who's panicking that the target just seems to be going up and up.....I worked out that if you manage 7 books per month, then the target peaks in June (22 books) and starts coming down again after that, and you'll be left with 1 to read in December.

Or if you manage 6 books per month, the target peaks in July (27 books) and then comes down, but you'll be left with 12 to read in December.

Maybe that helps any other number-orientated folk ;)

Yeah, I did the math and 7 is certainly the magic number!
