I've watched Holes, which I enjoyed, but I have never read the book.
And this is the 3rd time this week I've seen a recommendation for The Bell Jar, which would be completely new to me.

My mother loves A Tree Grows in Brooklyn; one of these days, I should read it.

And the "first" is apparently 'first that'll you choose, that you'll enjoy, that you didn't have to read for school.' "First" does not mean debut; at least I know off the top of my head that Louis Sachar's first book was not Holes.
