There are few board games more well known and varied than Monopoly. Whether you are familiar only with the classic version, or you've ventured out into the many, many local and pop culture variations, this week's prompt will give you a scavenger hunt of your TBR, looking for these pieces on the cover.

Traditional and Retired Tokens:
- Airplane
- Battleship
- Boot
- Cannon
- Cat
- Horse & Rider
- Iron
- Lantern
- Penguin
- Purse
- Racecar
- Rocking Horse
- Rubber Ducky
- Sack of Money
- Scottie Dog
- T-Rex
- Thimble
- Top Hat
- Wheelbarrow
These do not include the pop culture and regional variations, of course, but feel free to use any token you come across.

What are you reading for this prompt, and do you have any recommendations?

message 5: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I'm probably making this harder on myself than I need to and being fairly strict on how the token is represented. But I managed to come up with either

Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women, #1) by Evie Dunmore (horse and rider)

or

Dear Miss Kopp (Kopp Sisters, #6) by Amy Stewart (lantern)

Sydney Paige (shpaige19) | 71 comments My initial pick is Before the Coffee Gets Cold, which has a cat on the cover, though I'll likely switch to something with a dog on the cover since that tends to be my token of choice whenever I play Monopoly! (I'm hoping to find one where the dog doesn't die!)

Composting by Dick Kitto. My garden would rather I read that right now though, so it’s more likely to be Agatha Raisin Hiss and Hers (Agatha Raisin #23) by M.C. Beaton Agatha Raisin: Hiss and Hers.

I'll probably reread this one!

message 15: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1500 comments Okay - I have no idea what I'm going to read for this yet, but I had no idea about the history of the game pieces used in Monopoly. I found this link: https://monopoly.fandom.com/wiki/Tokens that might be useful. I have to admit that I wasn't that interested in this prompt because I hate playing Monopoly, but I think it's more interesting now that I've learned more about the history of the game. LOL.

Oh, that was a much better resource than the article I looked at! I LOVE that they include special edition tokens and pictures of most of them. I will probably still use one of the standard tokens, because that's the edition we had in the game closet when I was a kid, but it's fun to look. (I have never loved the actual game, but I've always loved the pewter tokens.)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3280 comments This one's been bugging me because I distinctly remember seeing a contemporary romance book with a scottie dog on the cover, and I can't for the life of me remember what it was!

Stacey D. | 1908 comments Having just slogged through a book of essays for by last 2021 GR Challenge prompt, I found myself caught up in Mary Gaitskill's essay collection, Somebody with a Little Hammer: Essays.

Happy to say I really enjoyed this one, as the author shares her most thoughtful and engaging views on contemporary books, music and film. The best was "Lost Cat: A Memoir". Look closely on the cover to find the little cat.

LeahS | 1398 comments I read What Matters in Jane Austen? Twenty Crucial Puzzles Solved by John Mullan , which has a top hat and a boot on the cover.

Interesting and fun look at some topics in Austen's writing. Now I must re-read Emma to see if Miss Bates does reveal all the clues to the story.

message 33: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I read Falling which has a plane on the cover.
Falling by T.J. Newman
I had been hesitant to start this as the plot just didn't sound like something I could see working for an entire book but it did and it was a pretty enjoyable read.

message 34: by Siobhan (new)

Siobhan J | 12 comments I was very excited when I figured out how I could fill this one!

My choice was Murder in Park Lane (Detective Lavender Mysteries #5) by Karen Charlton which has two horses and riders on the cover.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3633 comments The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov - Cat on the cover. Thanks to this prompt, I finally read this classic of Russian literature. I agree it's brilliant, but I can't say I really enjoyed it all. I liked some of the satire of communist Russia, and the pressure on writers to conform to the party line. The Pontius Pilate connections might be interesting to some. The zany comedy was dark and over the top, especially on audio.

Shannon Ralph | 188 comments When researching this prompt, I found that sunglasses were once a Monopoly token, so I think I am going to read one of the following with sunglasses on the cover:

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It
Other People's Clothes

I'm also considering these:

Perestroika in Paris (Horse)
The Power of One (Airplane)
The Confession (Rabbit)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I read When Blood Lies for this, for the top hat being worn on the cover. 17th or so in the series, but still an engaging read even this far in.

message 44: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Luncheon of the Boating Party by Susan Vreeland was this month's choice for my book club. The painting by Renoir is wrapped around the edition I read and there is a man with a top hat on the front cover and a woman with an affenpinscher (looks like a scottie) on the back cover. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you are looking for something for this category.

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 400 comments I've opted for Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible: The Surreal Heart of the New Russia because it feels very relevant considering world events, and also it has dogs on the cover. Also, it's coincidently fitting with the larger Monopoly theme, too.
Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible The Surreal Heart of the New Russia by Peter Pomerantsev

message 46: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3633 comments I highly recommend: The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek

The Book Woman's Daughter isn't as good. It's a sequel but it explains so much it could stand alone.

message 47: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danithenerdiest) | 2 comments I’m currently reading “Billy Summers” by Stephen King.

It has a car on the cover, but Monopoly is also mentioned multiple times in the book and played a couple of times.

I love find an accidentally perfect fit for a prompt. 😊

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1731 comments There was a computer game version of this my sister and I played. The announcer sounded very cool when he said " Horse and Rider"

This was on my TBR for awhile. The fact that it has a "Horse and Rider" made it perfect.
