Read this book around 2012 at a local library that has since closed.
From what I remember, the main character was male and poor (I believe he was homeless as well). Anyways, he along with all the other kids his age were brought to a castle to test their magic level or place in society would be. He was tested as a zero, which meant he was cursed/ useless. (The scale went up to 5 I believe) the main character then went on the run and got help from a retired knight/ guard, went on a journey, and I’m fuzzy on the details at the end.
