Also, this particular type of kinda-time-travel (has been done a lot), and is also called time-looping, repeating, or Groundhog Day (1993) (after the film).

Amy, please add more plot details to the header/ topic title. You can copy from what you've already written in the first comment. Someone is more likely to recognize your book.

In case anyone missed my post, this is totally _Replay_. Horse racing, and cover matches.
Following up on Justanotherbiblophile and Andy's suggestion of Replay by Ken Grimwood:

Quotes from the book:
- What horse was it? Northern Dancer? Or maybe Kauai King? Jeff was sure those had both won Derbies; but which years?
"Say, bartender!"
... "...have you got a paper?"
"Paper?"
"A newspaper, today's, yesterday's, it doesn't matter."
- "I want to make a bet," Jeff said.
Maddock smiled indulgently, lit a cigarillo, and waved for another pitcher of beer.
"What on?"
"The Kentucky Derby."

Amy, please add plot details to your topic header. Many novels could fit this vague description.
Sounds like

Quote from the book:
- "The Kentucky Derby! Why the hell not... He had a vast store of information that could be useful in the extreme. Nothing technical - he couldn't design a computer... He could make a lot of money betting on sport events and presidential elections... who had won the Derby that year?... Northern Dancer? Or maybe Kauai King? Jeff was sure those had both won Derbies; but which years?"
