This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread is now open for submissions and will close at Midnight Eastern time on October 5. Voting will start the next day, October 6 and will close at the end of the day on October 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Fall Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.

How “Fly” Are You? – 90’s Slang

“Booyah!” Every decade develops its own version of cool. In the 90’s, if something was cool it was dope or fly. Alrighty “Home Skillets,” let’s measure your coolness with some throwback 90’s expressions. Are you ready to “get jiggy” with some “bangin’” reading tasks?

This is a 3-book task, which must total 750 pages minimum.
Required: State which option you chose

Option 1: Read one book from each category.
Option 2: Read all three books from the same category because sometimes we get certain phrases stuck in our head.

Category A: “As If!”
“As If!” was an expression that went viral after the release of the movie Clueless. Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, was responsible for creating some of the most memorable 90’s catchphrases.

Read a book whose title or subtitle contains a word in one of the 50 sayings from the 90’s found in the following Buzzfeed List, “50 Sayings From the 90s That Make You Cringe.”

https://www.buzzfeed.com/bitedaily/50...

Words much match exactly, and “the” and “a” cannot be used. Required: State the slang saying, word used, and number of the saying on the list in your post.

Example:
The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix
#42 - "You Go Girl" - Matching Word - Girl

Category B: “Take a Chill Pill”
“Take a Chill Pill” was the 90’s way of saying relax or calm down.

Read a book with a title, subtitle and/or author’s name that contains 2 sets of double or consecutive letter “l’s”.

Examples:
These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall - 2 sets of consectutive L's found in author's name - Howzell and Hall
The Full Cupboard of Life (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #5) by Alexander McCall Smith The Full Cupboard of Life by Alexander McCall Smith - 2 sets of L's found in title and author's name - Full and McCall

Category C: “Talk to the Hand”
Talk to the hand was a sarcastic phrase popularized in the 1990s by comedian Martin Lawrence. The elongated phrase is usually, “Talk to the hand, because the ears ain’t listening!” In short order, it means, “Shut up!” For this task, it means “I don’t want to hear what you have to say because my nose is in a book.”

Read a book from the Goodreads list: “What Women Born in the 90s Have Read in 2021”

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Required: Post the page number the book was listed on.

Autumn Days

Autumn is my favourite time of year: Not too hot, not too cold. No hay fever or sunburn. Nature at it's most beautiful and bountiful. Let's celebrate it!

This is a three book task. Choose one option for each month and read a book for it.
Your books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used. No books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may be used.

SEPTEMBER

Even though my school days are behind me September always brings the feeling of Back To School. I crave new stationery and want to learn new things!

A) Read a book that takes place in a school, college or university. At least 50% of the book must take place in this place of learning. If the setting is not obvious from the goodreads description please provide evidence.

B) Read a book with at least one piece of stationery on the cover.
Your stationery item must be found on this list: https://www.smallofficeideas.com/stat... (ignore the "other essentials" category at the bottom. Biscuits, while delicious, are not stationery). Required: Show the cover and identify the item of stationery in your post.

OCTOBER
October is my favourite month of the whole year for two reasons: Foraging and Halloween! My love of foraging began with picking blackberries and apples for pies and crumbles, but superstition dictates that on Halloween the devil flies overhead and spits on the blackberries so they can't be picked past this point!

A) Read a book by an author who's initials (all of them) can be found in BLACKBERRY AND APPLE CRUMBLE.

B) Read a book with an mpg of Horror, Paranormal, or Witches. Embedded or standalone works.

NOVEMBER
Where I live November is cold and wet, so I would always rather be sat inside, warm and cosy, reading a book. There are only two things that can tempt me outside: Bonfire night and Christmas shopping!

A) Bonfire Night originated with the gunpowder plot of the 5th of November 1605. Read a book where at least 2 of the digits from 5/11/1605 can be found in the page number. Digits may only be used as many times as they appear in the target date. For example 111 or 355 may be used but 366 or 500 cannot.

B) For my Christmas shopping I try and make a point of shopping local and/or independent. Read a book with a title of at least two words where the initial of each word can be found in either LOCAL or INDEPENDENT. (optional extra just for fun, try and read a book by a local author or from an independent publisher!)

Forever Autumn

This is a three book task: read one book that matches each of Books 1, 2, and 3.
Your books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used. No books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may be used.

One of my favourite songs of all time is Forever Autumn, first recorded by Vigrass & Osborne in 1972, but made famous as the primary single from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds in 1978, sung by Justin Hayward. Yes, it's melancholy, but I do like it and it's a memory of my early teens.

This task is based around the lyrics of song, abbreviated versions of which are included below. The full lyrics can be found at: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/moody...

Book 1 (Verse 1):

The summer sun is fading as the year grows old,
And darker days are drawing near,
The winter winds will be much colder,
Now you're not here.

- Read a book from one of these autumn listopias. Required. State which list you used, and what page the book is on.
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Book 2 (Verses 2-3):

I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear,
I wish that I was flying with them
Now you're not here.

Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way,
You always loved this time of year
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
'Cos you're not here...

- Read a book with a flying bird or birds, and/or autumn trees/leaves on the cover. Required: include the cover; state if you’re using birds, leaves, trees or some combination thereof, and point out the element.

Book 3 (Verse 4):

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My life will be forever autumn,
'Cos you're not here...

- Read a book written by a single author, with a title of at least three words, where the initial letters of each word in the title can be found in the phrase “A GENTLE RAIN FALLS SOFTLY”, AND the author’s first and last initials can be found in “FOREVER AUTUMN”.
