Ho hum! It's been a long time since I have had a book that I was so bored with. The main character was a ditz to put it kindly. She did things that I found so unbelievable from a supposedly educated woman. Even the plot was flimsy. I know I'm a minority with this opinion, but it just didn't do anything for me. Oh wait...yes it did. It allowed me to mark another category off a challenge.

"A Tidy Ending" by Joanna Cannon - 
This is a well-rated book but I didn't like the story as much as I had expected. The ending was farfetched. So here's my outlier 2-star review.

The Lost Continent – Bill Bryson – 2**
Subtitle: Travels in Small Town America. After living abroad for some years, Bryson returns to his home country eager to scratch his nostalgia itch for the road trips and experiences of his childhood. The jacket promises “an uproariously funny narrative” but the book didn’t deliver … at least not in my opinion. I found much of it very dated (it was originally published in 1989), and his snide remarks about many of the places he visited were downright mean-spirited.

Dancing In the Lowcountry – James Villas – 1.5*
I was hoping for a charming, “old Southern lady” romp of a story. Instead, I got a tedious, repetitive meander that went nowhere. I did like all the references to the music of the ‘40s and ‘50s. I’ll give him an extra ½ star for that, though it wasn’t enough to save the book for me.

Keeping the House – Ellen Baker – 1.5*
The novel begins with a prelude set in 1896, when a young married couple come to Pine Rapids, Wisconsin, then moves forward to 1950, as newlywed Dolly Magnuson struggles to fulfill her role as the perfect wife to Byron. I was interested in Dolly’s storyline and was hoping for more insight into her maturation process. But Baker’s choices in the plot made me unsympathetic to this young woman. The additional “secret” behind the Mickelson property, and the constant moving back in time to tell that family’s story, did nothing for me. I disliked the bunch of them and finished the book only because it satisfied a challenge.

I had trouble understanding this book also. The movie makes everything pretty clear. It's all about symbolism which I'm sure you already know. It's quite good really but I hear your problems with the book!
