Hark! It's time to save the princess from the vast variety of monsters that are keeping her trapped in the castle.

This week, you will read books that will help you slay these monsters. There are a wide variety of monsters, each with different weaknesses, so make sure you are slaying the most you can to accrue points and win favor from the queen!

How It Works:
Read books to fulfill the prompts and slay monsters. When each monster is slayed, you will earn that monster's badge and points. You can attack multiple monsters at a time, and you can slay multiples of the same monster (except for the elusive sphinx!). You can also log your pages to attack those pesky harpies. Your battle strategy is up to you!

For more information and to ask questions, see our Introduction and FAQs thread.

Spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Each tab will help you track the monsters you slay. Use the tabs to fill in books, pages read, and audio hours listened that you have already completed. Use the planning tab to track books-in-progress and hopeful books. Your queen (me!) will be watching those spreadsheets to see when you've successfully vanquished the monsters.

I forgot to change the settings on the spreadsheet. You should be able to edit them as a group now. Sorry about that!

Perri | 886 comments I do believe in fairies, I DO believe in fairies. What a fun read-a-thon this looks to be!

Samantha | 1585 comments Good morning, hope everyone has a great reading day!

Chrissy | 1142 comments I woke up at five and couldn’t get back to sleep right away, so got some pages in!

message 10: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Good morning, team! I’ve got about two hours into my audiobook so far this morning, and hoping to finish either my print or ebook by the end of today 😊 (...or go off the rails and start five other books instead, honestly who knows)

Hi team! I'm sorry I haven't been a great captain so far... my schedule got a bit busier than I was expecting and I probably won't get much reading done today... hopefully I can make up for it tomorrow!

I'll go add my currently reading and TBR to the spreadsheet. Can't wait to see all the monsters we slay!

Perri | 886 comments Slow start to the read-a thon but I'll do better tomorrow! Laurel I bow to you! :)

message 13: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Unfortunately, I can't fit the book I read today into any of the monster categories, so it is just a page count for Harpies.

message 14: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Whelp, count me as another who's had a slow start to the read-a-thon - I got outside to see some friends, one of whom I haven't seen in over a year and a half. I WAS stuck in traffic though, so got some audio in! It's a bit after 6, so I'll get some pages in still tonight.

message 15: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments Hi everyone! I finished a book but also realized that it doesn’t fit in any of the categories. I’ll put in the pages, however.

Good morning Neverland! Rough start for the Read-a-Thon with our team! I plan on reading most of the day today, and I hope to finish both my print book and my audio by the end of the day tomorrow. Good luck reading today!

message 17: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments Good morning!

I finished Pumpkinheads last night and put it under wraiths using the short books slot.

I also got about half way through my Audiobook and have stuff I need to do today that I can listen to more of that and hopefully finish. I will also get started on my next print book before bed.

Might be a slow start but we got this! Good luck with the reading today!

I'm already over 100 pages down on The Maidens, with a whole afternoon of football to read through!

Would y'all say this is enough of a black and white cover to put it on that prompt? It only fits a few prompts.

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

message 19: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I finished Dopesick, which is similar to The Maidens for black and white cover. I can slot it into death of a character.

I did find a black and white cover on audio that I can start after The Sixth Extinction (and helps me with my main challenges) if you don't want to use The Maidens there.

message 20: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Though animal print is the patterns, would a stretch to use this be too much? I'm guessing yes, but just thought I'd throw it out there!

The Sixth Extinction An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert

message 21: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
Wait I think that would be a creative twist on the prompt. I'd count it, Traci.

Also, I can easily slot in The Maidens for protagonist that solves problems, so if you have another black and white cover on deck, I'll use The Maidens for that one.

message 22: by Kathryn (last edited Sep 12, 2021 01:12PM) (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments Is this green enough? Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto

The background is green but it takes up less than half of the front of the book. I can use it for death of a character or short book also.

Traci, I love your idea for animal print, because I didn’t see anything on my TBR list that would even remotely count. I read 33 pages of a book then decided against it after realizing that it was over 500 pages and I wasn’t really into the characters or story. So far I haven’t been too successful in this readathon but I’ll keep trying!

message 23: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments Traci the Sixth Extinction sounds scarier than the ghost story one I'm reading.
Kathryn, I also had a 500 + page book in my queue but I know I'd never finish it in time

message 24: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
Kathryn, I'd say that is more orange than green.

I have the 500+ page book covered! I'm listening to the audio of Illuminae, and the print version is over 600 pages, but it's epistolary so it reads really quickly. I will definitely be finished by tomorrow on that one.

message 25: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I figured it was worth a try. ; )

I put it under character death (it’s our second book with a character death but that and short book were the only places it really fit).

message 26: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments Terrific, Emily-good choice. I thought Illuminae was so fun and different. I actually ended up reading a lot more than listed, but the book I'm reading online only shows chapters, not pages. So I'll just list it when I'm done

message 27: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
Traci, why don't we move Dopesick to the black and white cover, and we can let Kathryn use Kitchen for the character death? That way we can try to get at least one of each of the monsters covered before we start adding second books to prompts.

I think we should focus on the Sphinx, if possible, to knock it out and get those points. So if you have a book that works for multiple prompts, let's assign it to the sphinx prompts first and then the other monsters if it doesn't work for any of those.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
Perri, I read Illuminae last year in print, but my book club has been raving about the audio and I needed something comfortable to read since life has been crazy, so I picked it up. I'm really enjoying the audio, although I think I liked the print more.

Yeah, first 2 books of this read-a-thon are opioid epidemic and major earth extinctions... not happy books!

message 31: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Just got back from the library, I picked up a couple that will work for alliteration. I can start one of them after my current physical book, but reading on this one is going a bit slow, so I probably won't start the next until Tues or Wed.

message 32: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments Alliteration is one of those things I always wonder if I am getting right. Would His & Hers fit? I can make this my next audio book.

Yes! At least that's the trend I was going with. If you want to pick up that prompt, that would be great!

message 34: by Traci (new)

I'm more than half way through A Head Full of Ghosts which would work . It's really creepy

message 37: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I didn't end up having much time to read yesterday, but considerably more today - I just finished The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina and put it on the mythological creature prompt on Sphinx.

I've got one hour left of my audiobook, The Wine-Dark Sea, which I can put on the "protagonist solves problems" prompt - or on yellow cover, if this seems like enough yellow? The spine and back cover are yellow, it's like a picture frame for the sea/ship painting. The Wine-Dark Sea (Aubrey & Maturin #16) by Patrick O'Brian

I also have a 208-page graphic novel that I plan to read tonight but I genuinely can't decide which cover color prompts I think it fits - feels like it counts equally for all of them, red/orange, green, or yellow, or equally not for all of them, lol. Otherwise, it does fit a couple other prompts. But basically, I don't know how to judge when books fit cover color prompts 😆

4 Kids Walk Into a Bank by Matthew Rosenberg

I'd say the graphic novel doesn't fit any of them since there's too much of all 3 colors. Looking at the options you've marked, I'd go with fiery character. Mostly because trying to think of a fiery character overwhelms my brain!

I won't finish another tonight, but based on hours left, should finish The Sixth Extinction tomorrow.

message 39: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
Good morning team!

I would skip the color covers for both of those books, Roxana.

I am going to finish Illuminae today... I only have 45 mins left of the audio and it's driving me crazy that I have to be here at work actually working instead of listening. I'll probably pick up the sequel today as well, Gemina, but I'm not sure if I'll finish it before the end of the week... depends on how much driving I have to do.

message 40: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments Good morning! It looks like the alliteration has been filled already, yay! I might see if I can find a book at least partially set in Egypt as that one just has one person working on it and it is a ? in the planning.

message 41: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
Samantha, that would be great!! I struggled a lot with the Egypt museum prompt this year so I wasn't looking forward to that prompt (even though I wrote these myself lol)

I finished Illuminae and slotted it in for big book since it didn't fit any of the sphinx prompts. Starting Gemina today when I leave work!

message 42: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I was able to download Death on the Nile from the library and it just a little over 6 hours long so should get that done quickly.

I have only read one Agatha Christie and it wasn't my favorite as I was a little put off by how some conclusions were based on race, sex and social class. I am hoping this one exceeds my expectations and that I am a Christie lover once I am finished.

message 43: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Thanks for finding a book Samantha! I've been staring at that row, but not wanting to read the options I was finding. The book I read last week had a couple of chapters in Egypt, but I finished it the day before the read-a-thon started!

message 44: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments Don't despair at my number neverlanderss. I'm totally engrossed in this story I just cant record it Creepy paranormal craziness

message 45: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I put The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History into the animal print prompt. Emily - if you've rethought this and don't think it works, it can be moved to yellow cover and I can look for something else.

Will start a new audio in the morning, probably The Expats, which can fit in either red cover or starts with a letter in Ogre.

I should finish my green cover tomorow.

message 46: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I finished 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank (which was a HECK of a ride, by the way) and put it on the fiery character prompt on Dragon. Should finish The Last Beautiful Girl tomorrow, which will fit paranormal; some other things, too, but that prompt seems light on options, so I'll probably put it there.

message 47: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11203 comments Mod
I'm reading The Guncle which has a yellow cover (enough to count, anyway), so keep yours where it is, Traci!

message 48: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1585 comments I wasn't excited about the ebook book I started on Sunday night and decided to start on The Heart Principle. I am enjoying it so much so should have more pages read today. Not many options for it but a red cover and long hair. She also has a pet rock and in the little I have read she talks to it and pets it so I would argue it counts.

I should finish Death on the Nile today, it is a little longer than I thought but am just past the half way point.
