Historical fiction novel with two boys from different time periods who have dreams about each other

I read a book for school around 2016 that I simply can't remember the name of. It was about two boys, one from modern-day society and the other from a period years ago (this boy may have been a notable historical figure, I can't quite remember).

The boys begin to have dreams about each other which affect their lives and decisions. The historical boy's story follows him marrying and going into battle (from what I can remember). The modern day boy was, I think, trying out for university but cheated, and was scared to tell his dad.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could have a guess about what this book might be! It wasn't too long and mustn't have been too difficult to read as it was assigned to 7th graders. The book might be Australian as that's where I live.

Nope, but thanks for trying. If it helps the historical boy’s story was set around the middle ages, so quite old history.

Yes definitely, it was sort of a coming-of-age story for both of them and whenever they dreamt of each other they got inspiration from the other about how to deal with life from what I can remember.
