Hey everyone,

My apologies on the delay of this reading challenge. I can't believe it's September. It sneaked up on me.

This month it's all about Science Fiction. You can read something that takes place in a dystopian future like The Devil You Know, you can read something that takes place in space like All Systems Red, you can read something funny like Terminal Alliance or revisit a classic like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (The radio play of this is fantastic, btw, and totally counts! We also have radio plays of the Star Wars series in our collection. Just so you know).

For those of you who enjoy Juvenile Fiction, give Voyage of the Dogs or This is War a try. You can even read tv/movie novel tie ins. Like Imzadi or Rogue Elements. The universe is the limit.

And, if you are enjoying this Science Fiction challenge. Sign up for our Virtual Lecture | How Star Trek Changed the World and Why it Still Matters on Tuesday, September 28 at 7 pm. Visit thecountylibrary.org/LectureSeries to register and learn more about this online event.

Carolyn | 181 comments A while ago I started reading Klara and the Sun but put it on pause for whatever reason. Conveniently, the other day I picked it up again and started where I left off. I reserve the right to change my mind, but right now this is what I will probably work on for this challenge.

Deborah | 184 comments Sweet! I love science fiction! I am planning to read Fallen Stars: Darkest Days by Gary J. Darby I will let you know when I finish!

Teresa | 255 comments Elizabeth, I'm glad you're ok. I signed up for the lecture. I'm reading The Last Best Hope The Last Best Hope (Star Trek Picard #1) by Una McCormack . It's the first in the Star Trek: Picard series.

message 5: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I will be reading Star Nomad by Lindsay Buroker. The two genre for which I won't do picture books are Mystery books and Sci-Fi.

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments Hmmmm..... pretty sure there's a sci fi readers'choice.

Thank you so much. I am fine. I just got distracted. Again, apologies for the late post.

There is! It's The Space Between Worlds. Two birds, one stone?

Okay, so I asked a question, that was an idiom. And now all I can think of is Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.

This is my very favorite Star Trek episode across all iterations of the series. TOS through Picard. Temba, his arms wide.

Lisa | 57 comments I have a question can we read any science fiction book we want for the science fiction challenge.

Linda Nielson | 279 comments Lisa wrote: "I have a question can we read any science fiction book we want for the science fiction challenge."

Yes. And it can be adult, youth, or children's.

message 14: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments Terminal Alliance was fun. I just started The Space Between Worlds.

John Scalzi is a great sci fi writer, especially if you're new to it.

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 57 comments I think I have decided to read the giver I am barrowing it on my nook from my mom. I am deciding to read it because it is short. and I have other books I want to read this month also.

Fun. My favorite in that series is Gathering Blue.

I loved The Giver, too and, like Elizabeth, my favorite of the series was Gathering Blue.

Stephanie | 55 comments Oh! I looks like Dragon Con happened recently and it included some book awards if folks are looking for more sci-fi options!
The winner of best sci-fi novel was Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and best media tie-in novel was a Firefly novel, which might be fun for folks who enjoyed that tv series: Generations There are tons of great nominees too, like Mary Robinette Kowal's The Relentless Moon which is part of her Lady Astronaut series (begins with The Calculating Stars

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments DANG! I forgot there was a new Andy Weir novel. I love both of his earlier ones. Still, I am enjoying Star Nomad!

message 25: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 674 comments Project Hail Mary is great.

message 27: by Linda (new)

Linda Nielson | 279 comments I read Waistcoats & Weaponry (Finishing School, #3) by Gail Carriger
This is the third book in the series. I thought it began slow but ended great.

alisonwonderland (Alison) | 70 comments My husband and I listened to ‘All Systems Red’, the first installment of The Murderbot Diaries, this past weekend. It’s only about three hours long. We both enjoyed it!

message 29: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (bethsmash) | 1224 comments Mod
Yay! I love Murderbot. I should see if I like the audiobook versions. Thanks for the heads up.

Indeed. I'm trying to get through Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard by the end of the month (on audio). It's 44 discs...I'm about half way, and it's about half way through the month...

message 33: by Teresa (new)

Teresa | 255 comments I finished my Star Trek book. It was good to get some of the back story for the ST: Picard series. The ending was sad.

message 34: by Tanya (new)

Tanya | 36 comments I read Stephen Gould's Jumper. I enjoyed it, but it kind of makes me laugh how much day-to-day stuff has changed in the last 30 years. Like, David makes an excuse about waiting for checks to clear to convince someone to accept cash payments. I don't think you could get away with that anymore.

De | 12 comments I just finished Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I finished Star Nomad by Lindsay Buroker. It was a delightful romp! I really needed something simple -- brain candy!

message 38: by Em (new)

Em | 69 comments This has been the toughest challenge for me. Not a genre I read. But I am reading Ready Player One and will get it finished by the end of the month to continue my 2021 Reading Challenge streak.

One reviewer said it was like part Firefly with a touch of Star Wars and Star Trek scattered in. But it really did have the lighter sense from Fireflay and only humans.

I read Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments Finished The Space Between Worlds. Much more romance than expected, but a solid sci-fi premise with well done philosophical themes.
