SOLVED. Middle grade (?) book about Butterflies and a grandmother who died and the child is living with her male butler/assistant/friend and the child is snooping around the house to look for answers. [s]

may have gotten it at a book fair years ago, so likely scholastic.
i know that the house the protag was living in had a lot of locked areas and they might've believed that there grandmother was still alive or something like that?? the caretaker was the male butler dude thingy i was talking about in the header. read a few years ago when i was still reading middle grade type stuff.

the male butler/assistant/idk who was being the protags caretaker had attempted to kill the grandmother but she ended up still being alive and then he tried to drown the girl n sister at the beach, but was ultimately saved.

update - i remember the mc had a sister. also, the book was really about butterflies. i know the butterflies were a thing. pretty sure it either had butteflies on the cover or title, possibly both.
