Set in public school bit like Decline and fall but a Latin teacher

Read it a few years ago but probably an old book. I feel like it is one of a series.
The teacher works at the school and a new head comes in and tries to oust the teacher. He is very old school and his room is at the top of the building and dusty. I think he reminisces about when at the school himself and something about a teacher who played them inappropriate songs on a. record player and a friend who possibly committed suicide?There is some kind of plot outside the school - spies? can't remember. The caretaker is involved I think. I seem to remember it was pretty satirical and funny.

Love Lies Bleeding came to mind, it's set at a boys' boarding school. Part of the Gervase Fen series by Edmund Crispin.
