Aimee Farebrother (aimeelf) | 5 comments I read this book a good few years back now, three minimum but im sorry i cant remember the date.
(SPOILERS)
Im not 100% sure if he was a soldier, but im pretty sure he used to clean mines off of the beach. I remember he became friends with this little girl. I think there was a scene with two children and a dog by an upturned boat and they kick the ball over to some old men (?? Cant remember what importance this had- thinking back one of the old men might be the soldier?? ) but these children were the little girls children i think. There was a little wooden toy that belonged to the girl (a pull along dog that the actual dog is named after) that either the soldier made for the little girl or he fixed it with a sewing spool.

Aimee Farebrother (aimeelf) | 5 comments I realise this is badly written. The "present" in the book is focused on the two little children and their dog however most of the story is written in the past with the old men telling stories about being soldiers. (they were in town for a football match). A few more things i remember is; a vague line about throwing stones across the ocean to their loved ones, the soldiers were all serving punishment and weren't active soldiers, they weren't from the town. Hopefully this helps and someone can help me!! Appreciate any help i can get!! :)

Is this a chapter book? Not a picture book I guess. Illustrations?
Author's nationality?

Michele | 2488 comments Aimee, do you remember where or when the story was set? What war the soldier would have been in?

Aimee Farebrother (aimeelf) | 5 comments I dont remember the authors nationality. But i think the book was set in england and after ww2 i think? The soldier was German. Regarding illustrations i remember two drawings, one of the upturned boat (a wooden row boat) and one of the little wooden toy towards the end of the story.
