Aric Friesen | 5 comments Read this book when I was probably in my early teens. Juvenile fiction fantasy. Cover was possibly dark with something to do with a golden collar. Race of people live in barrows/hollow hills in the marsh or swamps. One child has the magical ability to find lost things. Part of the plot has to do with the main character being able to keep a shapeshifter in it's human form and do his/her bidding but he'she later sets it free and it returns later to help them. I remember it turned into a crow or raven once.

Aric, I added some details to the header/ topic title. Feel free to edit it.

Genesistrine | 575 comments Half of this sounds like Power of Three by Diana Wynne Jones (living in barrows, marsh, the collar, one of the child protagonists' ability to find things) but there's no crow shapeshifter in that.

Here's the Google Books preview of Power of Three by Diana Wynne Jones - Genesistrine's suggestion:

https://books.google.com/books?id=HvW... There are different cover images - one features a golden collar.

Aric Friesen | 5 comments That's it! Thanks so much, I have had the image of that cover in my head for over 10 years. Some of the details were hazy I guess so I'll have to refresh my memory. It will be interesting to see if it lives up to expectations. Thanks again

Aric Friesen | 5 comments I read the first chapter and it's actually a Dorig that is forced to change from a blackbird to his true form when Adara says the right words. So that must have been what I remembered.
