Jane (PS) | 24334 comments 1. Introduce yourself to your team. Let your team members know where you are from. This is a 'nice to know' when categories are announced and when team-mates can expect other members to post their book choices.

2. Team Captain - reserve a couple of posts in this thread tracking your team's book selection and completion. (Alternatively they could convert a chat comment to the tracking post/s.)

3. Name your team. Using this round's theme of Couch Surfing, come up with a fun name. Given we are an open/public group with no age limit, so please make sure any chosen name is smart, not smutty ;)

Please PM your name to Jane(PS) by 5 March.

4. If you have a private profile, please 'friend' your team-mates. This is really important, because without this, your team-mates can't see your shelves to select a books under option 2. (It will also help with one of the categories in this round!)

5. Please post your book selections/completions in the format provided below. (This format is also posted in both the Q&A and Sign-Up threads.) We need to know the week that each book corresponds to, the page numbers, and how the book qualifies including links to lists/shelves (where applicable), etc. I can't stress this enough. When in doubt - link it*!

* don't link to your review in your completion post - reviews in your completion posts should be included in full in that post.

You don't want to start reading a book and then find it doesn't meet the requirements because some information (eg page count or theme link) was missing from your original post.

I will be monitoring this and your book will not be considered complete until I am satisfied that your selection and completion posts comply with the format rules of the challenge.

Remember - you can ONLY change your book selection in the week that the theme is called.

6. You MUST check in with your team each week, ideally once the theme is announced. Please let your team know if you expect to have spotty communication or are on holidays or having an operation, etc.

7. When you post the completion of your book, you must post a review; enough for us to know you have actually read the book. Please don't link to a review. You must post the review in this thread.

8. Re-reads are allowed but you can't read the same book twice within this challenge.

9. There is no prize for the winning team - bragging rights only :)

10. Each week, the theme will be announced in the Q&A/Announcement thread. The full list of themes announced during this round will be maintained in msg 1 of that thread.

The Rule on the Pass Option
* Each team can only have ONE member using their pass each week.
* Each member can only use that pass once each 5 weeks.
* This means that one or two team members (dependent upon the size of your team) will miss using a pass in each 5 week block.
* No-one can use the pass option in the last week of the challenge.
* In the final week Option 2 has altered and I will be allocating each team another team from which their book selection must be chosen :)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Key selection and completion post information. You must have ALL elements in your book posts.

For the initial selection post Option 1 I need:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Page numbers
How the book qualifies - please insert a link to the qualifying bookshelf/list.
If the theme is based off the bookcover or a letter in the title etc, please just repeat the theme.

For the initial selection post Option 2 I need:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Page numbers
Name of the team-member, their star rating, the date they read the book.

For the completion post I need:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Rating (1-5)
Review

Please DO NOT CHAT in these selction/completion posts. It needs to be super clear.

If you 'waffle' about your decided book - please REPOST your selection once you decide. DO NOT go back and edit your waffling post.

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I'll be tracking each team's progress separately, using the Captain's summary in each team's thread to check for accuracy.

A summary chart will be posted in the last week to let teams know their progress against other teams :)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments Pass The Parcel Team - Round 16
Couchsurfing

Its been a long 12 months and we are still living in fairly confined quarters. So we are going to live vicariously in our books, in cheap accommodation, meeting new friends and seeing new places.

1. Couchsurfing is a global app that connects travellers with couches in new locations
* Read a book with furniture on the cover.

✅2. For a small fee each month, you access a global database of couches.
* Read a book you bought on sale, at no charge, or you accessed for free (Kindle Unlimited counts).

✅3. Not sure about you, but those couches sounds dirty!
* Read a book with a 'dirty' colour on the cover - eg black, brown, tan.

✅4. "You have friends all over the world, you just haven't met them yet."
* From this round's players, find another member whose books interest you - select a book (any book, does not have to be one that they have read) to read from their bookshelves and become friends. Select your book from a player who is not already a friend.
You may friend each other and use each other's bookshelves - but it must be a new connection since the beginning of this round. A player in your team that you friended at the beginning of the challenge counts.
You must link to the bookshelf of your new friend to show their book that you have selected.

✅5. Couches are available all over the world.
* Read a book where at least one MC travels to a new location (on holiday, for work, relocate - whatever).
Qualification may be found in precis, main page, tag/shelf or list.

6. Couchsurfing is a global community of 12-14 million people in more than 200,000 cities who share their life, their world, their journey. There are 550,000 events across the world to meet up with members.
* That's a lot of numbers! Read a book with at least three zeros in its page numbers, average rating, total ratings and publication date combined.
This may alter during the week that you read the book (in the case of ratings), so please take a screenshot or have it verified by your Captain, another team member or me - whoever is available. You may use any edition of the book, but please make sure the link goes through to the correct edition that is to be verified.

7. The concept was created when Casey Fenton found a cheap flight to Iceland but didn't have anywhere to stay. Being an enterprising fellow, instead of settling for a pricey hotel Fenton hacked into the University of Iceland’s student database and e-mailed 1,500 students asking for a place to stay. Almost 100 people replied.
* Read a book on one of the following lists (sadly, the hacker lists aren't long enough ;):
Gay Romance with Bookish, Nerdy, Geeky Characters
I love your quirks - Best Romance Heroines that are odd in a good way
Romance novels with STEM heroines
Nerdgasms
Jazzy Creature Feature - Nerds, Geeks, Geniuses, Hackers, Klutzes

8. The app was created by Casey Fenton, Daniel Hoffer, Sebastian Le Tuan and Leonardo Bassani da Silveira - encouraging a mingling of cultures.
* Read a book with interracial/interspecies MCs.
Qualification may be found in precis, main page, tag/shelf or list.

✅9. Rediscover your own city.
* Read a book set on your continent.
Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand can combine to allow a greater book selection.
Please state your region in your post.

✅10. This is an adventure!
* Read a book tagged 'adventure'.
Qualification may be found in precis, main page, tag/shelf or list.

✅11. One of Couchsurfing's values is to 'stay curious'.
* Read a book that is not currently on your bookshelves.
The DATE that you add the book to your bookshelf must be in the week that this task is announced. State the date you added the book to your shelves.

✅12. So now I digress - its time to just surf!
* Read a book set in a beach town or on the coast.
Cities that sit on the ocean will count.
Qualification may be found in precis, main page, tag/shelf or list.

13. Surf your own shelves.
* On your preferred TBR shelf, look at the beige bar at the bottom of the page - on the sort function, click on 'random' and then read one of the first 3 books that now appear at the top of your shelf.

✅14. Surf GR
Click on the drop-down Browse menu (next to My Books in the top GR banner), click on Explore, click on Romance under the Genres listing on the far right, click on your preferred type of romance (keep refining as wished using the Genre lists).
* Read any of the books that appear on that actual page without clicking further on the lists, OR read a book by one of the authors that appear on that page. If you select the author option, you many read any book by that author.

✅15. Finally, no matter where you stay on your adventures when couchsurfing or otherwise, please keep your wits about you.
* Read a book with the letters W I T S in the title, series and/or author's name (any combination)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments Hi everyone.

I’m Hazel from Glasgow, Scotland. I work in HR and have been luckily and thankfully crazy busy over the past year. I have been with my husband for 20 years and have a 12 year old son (who is currently at home doing his schoolwork which is not easy) and an 18 year old cat. I will read anything although I prefer some romance in my books.

I’m looking forward to this round of ptp and getting to know you all. I’ve played and been a captain for this challenge for a few years now but I’m not perfect so if anyone spots a mistake please shout! I get confused about the page numbers and the book edition in this or the bachelor challenge all the time!

I usually have some team names thought up but so far all I can think of is Relax, Ride and Read.

Please can you all confirm you have read the rules of the challenge and make sure you have notifications turned on for this thread.

Nina Sutherland (nsuds27) | 35 comments Hi! My name is Nina (9-ah) :-D
I am from Michigan, United States. I absolutely love our crazy seasons. I work in healthcare as an X-ray Technologist. I am married to my amazing husband Kristopher.

This is my first time doing this challenge and I am a little worried about all the different threads. Please let me know if I am doing something wrong. Or maybe someone that has done this before feels comfortable messaging me and helping me out that would be awesome.

I like Relax, Ride and Read it matches the main group name --> Romance, Readers, Reading

I'm excited to do some fun reading with you all! :-)
Notifications are on.

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments Hi Nina

Thanks for the friend request. Please don’t worry about anything just ask if you need help. The only threads you need to watch are the QA/announcement thread where the weeks theme will be announced and this one.

I will try and post the theme here just after Jane does to make it easier. All you need to do is post a selection post and a completion post within the week using the format in message #3. Have you done any of the other challenges? This one is much more relaxed than the Bachelor challenge or the amazing race challenge - that’s why I’m happy to captain this challenge.

Nina Sutherland (nsuds27) | 35 comments I am currently doing the Meet and Greet Round 44 right now. So post it here and go back to edit as we go? Should I be finding books to each theme now and adding to my shelf so I'm a little prepared as themes are called?

Hi Nina - just a quick clarification - the selection post and completion posts are separate. So don't edit your selection post to a completion post. Post the first part of the post above as your selection - and second part of the post as your completion.

And do a new post if you change your mind on the book you have selected. We don't go backwards in the thread unless we have to - so its better to just repost any changes :)

(BTW, you can only change the book in the week the theme is announced.)

message 18: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments When reading through the 15 themes that could be called, you should add books to your TBR shelves if you don't have something that you are already happy to read. It will become clear as you start to play, but its always good to have a few books that fit the themes before we kick off :)

Once the theme is called you post your selection post then when you finish, before the end date you post your completion post and you do this each week.
Here is a link to my last ptp group and you can have a look and see

message 20: by Hazel (new)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments I also have a list of books that could meet each theme. If you don’t have any that meet the criteria you also have option 2 where you can read a book that another team mate has read in the last 6 months.

message 21: by Nina (new)

Nina Sutherland (nsuds27) | 35 comments Ah Hazel thank you!!! That is very helpful. I am a VERY visual and hands on learner. I think I got it now. :-) I'm excited!
Thanks Jane, I deleted my post with all the options lol I made a shelf called Pass The Parcel TBR so I will start looking at books now.

message 22: by Hazel (new)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments No problem. It’s sometimes easier to see how it’s played out before rather than read an explanation. I will try and help where I can. This time is usually good for me to be on goodreads as it’s nearly 11pm my time so usually active during the hours 7pm til midnight my time and then always check first thing in morning. I know some of our other teammates will help as well!

April Raimond | 1422 comments I live in Killeen Texas. I am an army wife of almost 18 years. I work from home doing in home childcare for the state of Texas. I have an 18 year old son and and a 17 year old daughter. I enjoy reading before the kids get here and when they leave. It is my relaxing time. I have never played this game. (so I will be following your guide Hazel) I have played bachelor and the Amazing race. I love doing the challenges.

message 25: by Hazel (new)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments Hi April

I thought we had been on a ptp team before but maybe it was bachelor - I’ve lost track. This is less chaotic so you’ll be fine! I’m here to help if you need it.

message 26: by Grace (new)

Grace | 1728 comments Hi team! I'm Grace and I live in San Diego, CA. I'm on Pacific Time and themes are called around 3 pm my time. I work at an elementary school as a support teacher.

I read mainly MF romance. I dabble around in all genres and read a little bit of everything. With the pandemic, though, I have been reading a lot of sickly sweet insta-love novellas, just to forewarn everyone.

I have played in most PTP challenges and really enjoy using option 2 to find new books and authors I haven't read before.

I'm horrible with names but I'll try to think of some. I'm good with Relax, Ride, and Read if everyone likes it.

message 27: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 514 comments Hello everyone! I'm so glad I get to play this with you. Hazel, I think you were my captain last time, and I'm so happy to have you again!

I enjoy option 2 as well - I've found some new favorites that way - and I love finding books :)

I've read the rules and my notifications are on. (And boy do I hate the days Goodreads notifications don't work!)
And I like Relax, ride and read as a name. Plus, I need to remind myself to relax about things :)

message 28: by Carrii (new)

Carrii (carrilove) | 47 comments Hello! My name is Carri and I’m 15:) I guess Im the youngster in this group. I love reading it’s one of my main hobbies. I’m finishing up freshman year and going into sophomore year which I’m super excited about.

I’m very new and fresh to the games/groups so I probably will be asking a few questions so I don’t get behind or stuck on things.

But with that I’m ready to start the game:)

message 29: by Hazel (new)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments Hi Team!
That’s us all checked in. Carri and April what do you think of the name Relax, Ride and Read?

Grace, insta-love is good and I look forward to scrolling through your lists if I need an option 2. We have definitely been on at least one challenge team before. I requested a lot of Arcs from net galley recently and didn’t think I would get any but I got them all so I have had 20 to read and review before the end of March! I’m now in a panic.

Suzanne it’s good to be back on a team together. I know you have some good selections on your shelf if I need an option 2.

Carri I think you definitely qualify as the youngster of the team although in my head I’m still only about 18 it’s just my body that’s letting me down! I just hope that you won’t be scandalised by any of our (my) book choices.

I’m friends with everyone now which should help with the theme call that needs a new friend.

If any of you need help just shout - the theme is called on Friday at 4pm US EST which is 10pm my time so I’m 6 hours ahead. I usually check GR a couple times a day and more active between 7pm and midnight if you’re looking for me.

I’m just writing my themes down and checking for books that match the theme and seeing if any books I have need to be added to lists that will get them to count in terms of qualifying. I’m struggling with finding a book with furniture on it which I didn’t think I would.

Suzanne | 514 comments Carri, this is a great game to start with, because Hazel is so helpful! I loved to read as a teenager too, and that never stopped, but I wish there had been Goodreads and challenges back then, because they are so fun - and it is great associating with others that also love reading.

Hazel, I thought furniture on the cover would be easy too and never actually checked! I wonder if my mind often just fills in the furniture.

message 31: by April (new)

April Raimond | 1422 comments Hazel I like Relax, Ride, and Read. Carri welcome to the group. I wish my 17 year old would read as well. The challenges are fun. Suzanne we are on the same team as Turf Wars. And what is good reads problem? Twice I have typed up a response in different groups and the box goes pink with some code.

message 32: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 514 comments I HATE when that pink box happens. When I'm on my computer, I can copy my response, reload the page, and paste the response. That always works. But on my phone...grrr...

It's great to have you on two teams April!

message 36: by Hazel (new)

Hazel (x1f4d6hx1f4d6) | 2965 comments Week 1: Theme call

Option 1:
4. "You have friends all over the world, you just haven't met them yet."
* From this round's players, find another member whose books interest you - select a book (any book, does not have to be one that they have read) to read from their bookshelves and become friends. Select your book from a player who is not already a friend.
This doesn't have to be from your team - it can be anyone who is playing in this round.

You may friend each other and use each other's bookshelves - but it must be a new connection since the beginning of this round - from sign up - NOT from today. A player in your team that you friended at the beginning of the challenge counts.
You must link to the bookshelf of your new friend to show their book that you have selected. If linking to a bookshelf is hard, note the date that they added the book to their shelves.
Note the date you became friends (which you can find on your friend list). I don't need to see a link or other justification - just the date.
The series rule can be applied to this task - that is, you may use the next book that you are up to in a series to the one you find on your new friend's shelf.

Option 2:
Key date - 4 September 2020
A book on your team mates 'read' list AND rated at least 3 stars and read on or after the key date.

Option 3:
Pass
This can only be used once each 5 weeks. Only one team mate can use this option each week.

Hi Carri - please follow the format that the others have used. So that includes noting in your selection post the number of pages for the book you have selected, how the book qualifies and including the book link.

To include the book link please follow this post's instruction:

If you don't do the booklink, please provide details on the book's name and author (typed out) along with that hyperlink you already have in your post.

If you use option 1, you need to include a hyperlink to your new friend's bookshelf to show the book you have selected on their shelf.

Thanks!

Book: Temptation (The Hunted, #1) by Ivy Smoak
Rating: 2⭐️
Review: This was more like a 1.5⭐️ for me and that’s still generous. I had a lot of issues with this book. The MC Penny is sexually assaulted by a male student at a party and then she forgives him, contemplates a relationship with him, becomes his best friend and then leads him on whenever she is not getting what she wants from the professor she is in a ‘relationship’ with. Penny lies about her age and pursues her professor who she continues to call professor throughout the book which made me cringe. He has no substance to him and seems to be hiding many things apart from his wealth. The whole concept is meant to be taboo but none of the characters endeared themselves to me and all seemed very immature.
