Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs

Review

I haven't read this book in a lot of time because it felt sad in that moment, and it's still sad for me. The relationship between Anna, Charles and Brother Wolf (yes, a threesome ;) ), is evolving, and Anna is more confident. It's her first introduction to a lot of people, too, and in a complicated situation. That part of the story is nice (I like the touch of the witch, too), but the main story reads very, very sad for me, specially some motivation. I liked it but I think it will take some time before I revisit it again.

Review: Fun!! This book is so much fun! Reading other people's reviews, many found the banter to be too much, but I enjoyed it from start to finish. I found myself laughing out loud at different parts (sometimes in public) and just enjoyed the ride. The fact that there is a bit of a cliffy only made me immediately download book 2 - I might have minded more if I had had to wait, but since I didn't it isn't a bit of a problem.

Finn uses humor to cover up a lot of past trauma and the insecurities they have left him with. The author does a great job of peeling back the layers and I have a feeling there is still a lot more to learn.

Marcus is a big, bad who really isn't. He's grumpy sure, but he is also kind and protective. I hope book 2 digs deeper into his past. At times it felt that Marcus was a bit too contemporary, it was hard to remember that he is an ancient being.

Quick question, could it be that you haven't posted your review for last week (Hunting Ground)?

Review: This is my 3rd time reading through the Mercyverse and I still love it as much as I did the first time I read it. I had forgotten about the love triangle (or rather, square) in the early books. I still don’t love it but it doesn’t bother me like it used to because Mercy and Adam’s bond is so strong that there really never was any contest.

I really enjoyed this particular re-read. Based on what we know now about Wolf, Elizaveta and the rest of the gang, I loved looking for clues to mysteries revealed in later books.

Saint's Passage (Elemental Covenant, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter

Review

This book has been in my TBR for some time, but it never has made the way to the top. This bingo has been a change to get it and I'm very happy about it. As it's a spin-off of another series, there is not so much background story (that I don't usually like). There is no angst, something I associate to vampires, and that I don't like. The mystery is good and gives opportunity to show another characters and changes in their life (for the rest of the series). It's a series I'll be checking if there is a new book for sure.

Review: This book certainly left me in a rather contemplative mood when I finished it. I agree with Marisa that this is an overall rather sad and somber book. The motivations behind the killing of so many were so perfectly chilling - and so perfectly inadequate of a justification. Anna makes me root for her so hard. Charles is her perfect reward (even, or especially, when he is so far from perfect). I enjoyed a lot of the secondary characters in this one and wouldn't mind coming back to Seattle to spend more time with Angus's pack...I hope to learn more about Ric in the future as well. A lot was left open about his character (and his pack - I have questions) which was intriguing. All in all, a compelling read if not an enjoyable one.

Review:

This was a re-read from years and years ago. *sigh* I totally forgot how good it was, even now I'm like... I HAVE TO READ MORE!
That's what Cat and Bones do to you ;)

Worldbuilding:
A rich (and volatile) present-day urban fantasy, what more do you want? We have sentient ghosts, English vampires and who knows what else out there.
While Cat is part of the supernatural scene, she doesn't know much about it, so we get all the info alongside her. There never is an information dump, but we slowly and steadily get to know what's going on in the vampire world and how close it is tied to our own.
Scenes and environments were very well described and detailed enough to stay fully immersed in the story.

Character development:
Our cast is amazing, seriously. Prepare to get emotionally invested and enjoy the wild ride.
Catherine, but call her Cat, is a hybrid: half-human and half-vampire. She has been hunting and killing vampires for the last 6 years until one fateful night she met Bones. Ahhhh where to start... I really like that he's so different from the usual vampire stock (as in not dark and broody). I mean, he's English! :D
Both of our main characters are well fleshed out, with a colourful past, their own fears, hopes and dreams for the future.
I don't know, but Cat and Bones just make such an awesome pair. Yes, they kick ass and protect each other, but it goes way deeper and that just makes me sigh with a grin on my face.

Pacing and flow:
As I've said before, it's a wild ride, but sooooo worth it! There is a lot of action going on but perfectly balanced by the conversations that drive the story forward.
There wasn't any part that I felt took too long or felt rushed. The story was told at its own pace and that was perfect.

The book:
The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is sex described (if that is important to you).
It's 358 pages long, spread over 27 chapters and told from Cat's point of view.

Final thoughts:
To hell with it, I'm reading the next book immediately afterwards! I can't recommend this series often enough, even if you're not sure, read a sample and you'll be as hooked as I am ;) That just leaves me with one more thing to say: enjoy ;)
