Barbara ★ | 9252 comments Touring Historic Mexico
Duration: September 1, 2021 - August 31, 2022

READ: 33/33

HISTORIC CENTER OF MEXICO CITY
Mexico City is the capital and largest city of Mexico, and the most populous city in North America, with a metropolitan area of nearly 21,804,515 residents. It is the oldest capital city in the Americas and one of two founded by indigenous people.
• Read a book set in a capital city (tell the city and the country it is the capital of)
1Q84 - Haruki Murakami (Tokyo, Japan) 1/25

The Historic Center of the city has been declared a Unesco World Heritage site. Landmarks in the center include the Plaza de la Constitucion (Zócalo), the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Aztec temple ruins Templo Mayor (Major Temple). The Templo Mayor was discovered in 1978 while workers were digging to place underground electric cables.
• Read a book by an author whose initials are TM or MT
Cold Blood - Theresa Monsour 12/27

Chapultepec Park houses numerous museums, including Chapultepec Castle with its magnificent views of the city, and the National Museum of Anthropology which displays the Aztec Calendar Stone. The Palacio de Bella Artes is an impressive white marble theatre/museum whose weight is such that it is slowly sinking into the soft ground beneath.
• Read a book where the characters visit a park (quote the passage)
Secret of the Gargoyles - Rebecca Chastain 1/15
(reminding me we weren't alone in Focal Park), p6

XOCHIMILCO
Xochimilco is one of 16 boroughs of Mexico City, though for most of its history Xochimilco was independent and separate from the capital city.
• Read a book with an ‘X’ in the title or author name
Onyx - Jennifer L. Armentrout 10/14

Xochimilco is best known for its canals, which are left from an extensive system of lakes and canals that connected most of the settlements in the Valley of Mexico. These canals, along with artificial islands, called chinampas, attract tourists and residents who ride on colorful gondola-like boats, called trajineras, around the nearly 110 miles of canals.
• Read a book with a boat on the cover (NOT a ship).
The Jungle - Clive Cussler 11/27

TEOTIHUACAN
Teotihuacan is known today as the site of many of the most architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids built in the pre-Colombian Americas. During Aztec times, the city was a place of pilgrimage and identified with the myth of Tollan, the place where the sun was created. The history of the city covers four distinct periods from 200BCE to 750AD
• Read a book with a main page genre of MYTHOLOGY
Norse Mythology - Neil Gaiman 10/7

Built between the 1st and 7th centuries AD, it is characterized by the vast size of its monuments – in particular the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, laid out on geometric and symbolic principles.
• Read a book by an author whose initials are in QUETZALCOATL (all initials count)
A Terrible Beauty - Tasha Alexander 11/26

Teotihuacan is also anthropologically significant for its complex, multi-family residential compounds, the Avenue of the Dead, and vibrant well-preserved murals. Additional Teotihuacan exported the obsidian tools that are found throughout Mesoamerica.
• Read a book with characters who live in a multi-family setting
Dying Breath - Heather Graham (MC lives in an apartment complex) 1/17

BASILICA of OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic church, basilica, and National shrine of Mexico which houses the cloak containing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The 1709 shrine was built in the North of Mexico City near the hill where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared. One of the most important pilgrimage sites of Catholicism, the basilica and Juan Diego’s cloak are visited by several million people every year, especially around 12 December, Our Lady of Guadalupe's feast day.
• Read a book with total pages or original publication date which include “12” intact
Love, Eternally - Morgan O'Neill (pub July 2, 2012) 10/29

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin,[a] also known as Juan Diego 1474–1548), was a Chichimec peasant and Marian visionary. He is said to have been granted apparitions of the Virgin Mary on four occasions in December 1531. Juan Diego is the first Catholic saint indigenous to the Americas.
• Read a book where the 1st letter of each title word can be found in JUAN DIEGO CUAUHTLATOATZIN
Curse of the Gargoyles - Rebecca Chastain 9/13

The Guadalupe narrative was first reported in Nahuatl in 1649, and translated into Spanish in 1895. The narrative describes how Juan Diego, on his way to the Franciscan mission station to perform his religious duties was visited by an apparition of the Virgin Mary who instructed him to request that a chapel be built on the site in her honor. The Bishop was not inclined to take action. The third time Diego saw the Virgin, she instructed him to pick the flowers at the top of the hill. He found roses blooming out of season, picked them and carried them wrapped in his cloak to the Bishop in Mexico City. When he unfurled the cloak the roses spilled out, revealing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe imprinted on the cloak. The Bishop recognized the miraculous sign and had the (first) chapel constructed.
• Read a book that has been translated (list original language and translated language);
The Ice Queen - Nele Neuhaus (German to English) 12/7

• Read a series book # 4
Protector - Anna Hackett (Galactic Gladiators #4) 9/23

The Biblioteca Palafoxiana (Palafoxiana Library) was established in 1646 by Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, who donated his own 5,000 books to start the collection. SAN MIGUEL de ALLENDE
San Miguel de Allende is located in the far eastern part of Guanajuato, about 170 miles from Mexico City. At the beginning of the 20th century the town was in danger of becoming a ghost town after an influenza pandemic. But its Baroque/Neoclassical architecture was “discovered” by foreign artists who gradually moved in and gave the town its reputation. The town continues to attract a significant number of foreign retirees, artists, writers and tourists.
• Read a book with a main character who is an artist or writer
Thanksgiving - Janet Evanovich (a potter) 12/4

In the historic center, there are an estimated two thousand doors, behind which there are at least two thousand courtyards of various sizes. Many have been restored to their former colonial state, with facades of ochre, orange and yellow, windows and doors framed by handcrafted ironwork and made of hewn wood. Very few structures have front yards; instead, open private space is behind the main façade in courtyards, where the private gardens are protected from dust and crime.

One of the largest tourist events in the state is the Noche de Muertos (Night of the Dead), part of the Day of the Dead celebrations. • Read a book with a PINK cover (post the cover) /or/
A Date with the Other Side - Erin McCarthy 2/14

The natural history of the area is vibrant and diverse. The state is crossed from northwest to southeast by the mountain range Sierra Madre del Sur. It is also crossed from west to east by the Trans-Mexican Volcano Belt which includes active, dormant and extinct volcanoes. The best-known volcano in the region is the Paricutin volcano, which surged suddenly from a farmer’s cornfield in 1943, and by 1952 had left a cone 1,391 feet high (424 meters). But the state is possibly best known for the national and state parks which include the winter grounds of the monarch butterflies.
