Back for the third year, the Bota Bota ice canoe challenge is an extreme sport activity in which athletes push and paddle their canoes in the icy waters surrounding the Old Port in Montreal, Canada. The activity is open to the public, although it is suggested that only experienced athletes participate.

description

For this Challenge you will need to read a single book (at least 200 pages in length) to go from touch point to touch point. Each segment of the race (four in all) will have a different set of book requirements to match the length of the distance between the touch points.

Duration: Feb 1 - 28, 2015

All canoe teams start at the historic Clock Tower.

To go 8 kilometers to the Promenade du Vieux-port, choose one:
Read a book published in 2015
Read a book that is at least 400 pages long
Read a book with a clock on the cover (not a watch)
Read a book where a character can speak French
Read a book with a severe weather event. Specify
Read a book written by an author who shares your initials

To go 2 kilometers to the Bickerdike Dock, choose one:
Re-read a book
Read any 200+ page book you'd like
Read a book with snow or ice on the cover
Read a book whose author is male

To go 3 kilometers to the La Ville Imaginaire, choose one:
Read a book set in Canada
Read a book with no people on the cover
Read a book that was given as a gift
Listen to an audio book

To go 4 kilometers back to the Clock Tower (finish line), choose one:
Read a children's book
Read a book written by a Canadian author
Read a book with a 'q' or 'x' somewhere in the title
Read a book where a significant amount of time is spent on a boat or ship

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.
Please remember, this is not a race against other readers.
Making it to the finish line is the goal.

No I don't know. Author Kaje Harper. Home pages states born in Canada, currently living in Minnesota.

How do you go about finding an author's citizenship? I just starting checking the author pages of books on my TBR. Rather time consuming way to go about it I think. Is there a faster way?

The best way to answer your question is for you to look at messages 9 (mine), 14 (Susan A), and 19 (Lily). You need to choose one book for each section of the race. You will need to read four books to get to the finish line. Does that make sense?

BC, congratulations on making it to the finish line. The threads get moved to the archives promptly, don't they?

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 2348 comments I know it can count as a Children's book ... but does this count as a CLOCK on the COVER?
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

I have consulted with my son. (Brad is 28-years-old, has autism, and has watched this movie at least a dozen times.) Brad says it is a pocket watch on Tock's body. If you look closely at the cover you'll see the knob on the top that adjusts the hour and minute hands.

Sorry, it's not a clock.

Edited to add: free e-books from Amazon with clocks on the cover:
The Unspinnable Big Clock Scandal (Caitlyn Rocket Mystery No. 2) by Jill Winters Fateful (Fateful, #1) by Cheri Schmidt The Medium (Emily Chambers Spirit Medium Trilogy #1) by C.J. Archer Wings of Shadow (Underground, #1) by Anna Kyss The Clockwork Cathedral (The Time Corps Chronicles #1) by Heather Blackwood

I'm really new, but I'd like to try, too.

4/4 - the task with a boat/ship... Counts a spaceSHIP too?

And is it ok if I choose my books on the way or do I have to choose them all now?

To go 8 kilometers to the Promenade du Vieux-port, choose one:

Read a book written by an author who shares your initials - The Getaway God by Richard Kadrey 2/10

To go 2 kilometers to the Bickerdike Dock, choose one:

Re-read a book - Twilight 2/11

To go 3 kilometers to the La Ville Imaginaire, choose one:

Read a book with no people on the cover- Murder by Mudpack 2/7

To go 4 kilometers back to the Clock Tower (finish line), choose one:

Read a book where a significant amount of time is spent on a boat or ship Close Quarter 2/8

(I see why a spaceship wouldn't do it as 'ship' here, this one is set on a real ship, a cruise ship)

The Getaway God (Sandman Slim, #6) by Richard Kadrey Twilight (Twilight, #1) by Stephenie Meyer Murder by Mudpack by J.G. Goodhind Close Quarter by Anna Zabo

Hi, Rosa. Welcome to the challenge. The boat or ship task was meant to tie in with the canoe race. But since nobody knew that, I'm going to say that a spaceship is fine.

You can choose your books as you read. Enjoy!

I'm glad you enjoyed the marathon, Cait. There will be a race every month. I think March's race will be held in Finland.

Cait S Would this one be okay for Canadian author? It says she was born in Indiana but she settled in Nova Scotia. Not sure if they need to be a born and raised Canadian :)

The Birth House by Ami McKay

Finished! Thanks for this, it was a great fun, I'm looking forward to the march race!

And it was especially appropriate because just yesterday there was a really exciting go-for-gold skiing race between canada and the country I'm from :-)
