Melindam | 4427 comments Found another book for Red 7, which I am happy to reread, as it's Terry Pratchett's Discworld. He is my absolute favourite author, besides Jane Austen.

Going Postal (Discworld, #33) by Terry Pratchett

And I also have 2 books with V characters.

Melindam | 4427 comments Concerning colour cards, we still need to read for 3 + 4 WD4 cards, which is doable as I checked your books on the sheet.

Blue 0 - Alma
Yellow 9 - Lorna
Red 7 - Melinda
WD4 (duplicating Blue 0) - Colleen
WD4 (dupl. Blue 5) - Melinda
WD4 (dupl. Blue 6) - Barbara
WD4 (dupl. Blue 9) - Lorna

We already duplicated Green 2, so we cannot use any more green covers for this round.

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 285 comments I started reading Five Feet Apart (blue cover) but because it is a Paper book and I am moving to a new place I'm not being able to read it (already packed most of my stuff), but count on me, I will read it. There are looooads of characters that will fill some of our cards.

message 257: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Good luck with the moving, Barbara. I am listening to an audiobook that has blue cover and could work for 6 Blue, in case you cannot finish yours by the end of the month.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!

February MINI CHALLLENGE

February Mini link

Countdown to Mini

We have given each team a popular book from the 1980s.

As a team, you need to try and read as many books that you can connect with your 1980s book as possible. The ways the books "connect" is completely open to interpretation.

Creativity is the key to the challenge, not rules.

For example; Team XYZ is assigned The Handmaid's Tale.
They read books by Canadian authors, sci-fi MPG, books with something red on the cover, dystopian books, books where a young female is in an arranged relationship with an older male, a book where two characters do something in secret etc.

You don't need a unique reason for each book read and connected. So in the above example, we could read and connect more than one MPG Sci-Fi books (for example) to claim the mini challenge points.

For each book read and connected you will receive 10 points. As a team you can read a maximum of 40 books for this mini challenge.

If one of your team members also reads (and finishes) your assigned 80s book during the mini challenge, you will receive 30 bonus points.

(There is only 30 points per team so although more than 1 team member is welcome to read the book, there are no extra points on offer)

◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on February 14, 9am UTC and before March 1 at 9am UTC (when the March UNO month begins).
◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply

Paul Sheldon. He's a bestselling novelist who has finally met his biggest fan. Her name is Annie Wilkes and she is more than a rabid reader - she is Paul's nurse, tending his shattered body after an automobile accident. But she is also his captor, keeping him prisoner in her isolated house.

Melindam | 4427 comments As we receive 30 bonus points, if one of the team members reads the book, I am looking for (a) VOLUNTEER(S) who can finish it by the end of this month! :)

I read the synopsis (which in itself gave me nightmares) and based on it, I am throwing some ideas here, which will hopefully help you to see whether your books could be connected in any way or give you more inspiration. When in doubt, please consult Heather and me.

Reasons to connect

◈ a book that was adapted into a movie/theatre play
◈ another book by Stephen King
◈ a book with an author/character called Stephen / Paul / Annie /King
◈ a book about a writer
◈ a book about books
◈ a book where a character is king / royalty
◈ featuring a serial killer
◈ featuring a nurse
◈ Standalone or part of a series (given there's a serial killer :)
◈ a book with Main Page Genres Horror / Fiction / Thriller / Suspense / Mystery / Crime / Adult
◈ a book with eyes on the cover
◈ featuring a character who is a celebrity of some sort
◈ where someone is a big fan of ....
◈ a book where someone is unhappy
◈ a book that was nominated for or got and Award
◈ a book where someone is kidnapped or injured / there is murder or attempted murder / where someone is planning to escape/escapes
◈ a book with a mentally ill character / a character who is in a wheelchair / who has a car accident
◈ a character who has some kind of addiction
◈ a book with Romance or Historical Romance MPG (as the MC of the book writes Victoriam era romances! according to wikipedia)
◈ a book where someone has a child
◈ a book where a character is searching for someone
◈ a book where there is a snowstorm
◈ a book set in Colorado
◈ a book by an American writer
◈ where a character has blue eyes
◈ a Sheherezade/1001 nights retelling
◈ where someone uses/has a typewriter
◈ where some takes painkillers
◈a book published in June or in November
◈ some deadly looking tools (gun, sword, axe, etc) on the cover that can cause injury
◈ featuring an evil/dangerous character
◈a book that is 370 pages long

etc......

1 reason can be used for several times, but not infinitely!
You can list possible reasons in Column X on our tracking sheet.

message 271: by Melindam (last edited Feb 12, 2021 11:08AM) (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Hi Lorna,

no worries. I personally give a wide berth to the genre horror in general, so I am not going to push anyone, just putting it out there in case someone's literary tastes are leaning more toward it. :)
Also, please have a look at those books that you have alreasy listed, but haven't finished yet.

The possible connections I listed are not the only ones thay may work, though I tried to open them as wide as possible.

HP books would meet quite a few criteria, tho. :)

message 272: by Alma (new)

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments One of us has to read misery?
I have finished one of my books and Hamnet is nearly finished, so I don't mind reading it again. I read it when I was 14 and had nightmares for nearly two weeks. I became a healthcare professional years later but I like to think this book had nothing to do with my decision. :).

message 273: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Alma,

Only if you are absolutely sure! I don't want you to have nightmares again!! :)

As long as it's been more than 6 months, re-reads are allowed

message 274: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments We don't "have to" read it, but if 1 of us does, it will earn us 30 bonus points.

message 275: by Alma (new)

Alma (almamm) | 173 comments Haha you are right we don't have to read it unless we want the 30 extra points but we probably should read.
I'll do it, no problem.

Laura..devouring books like crumpets (lauzacookie) | 640 comments Im glad one of you can read it im not the biggest fan of his writing style, i fell asleep while reading Carrie... Plus i have no library to borrow it from

message 284: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Falling asleep is preferable to getting nightmares. LOL

But I have The Eyes of the Dragon on audio, which some of his fans found too soft, so probably I can handle that. :D

message 285: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments I have to say that I am quite proud of myself having managed to connect Stephen King with the genre Romance. ;)

Weekly Update!

Hey Teamies!

We have another week of fantastic team effort behind us.

We have already covered 64!! cards out of the total of 106 and only 42 is left, which is ideal as we need to read 40 books (only 37 now!) + 1 (Misery) to cover all our mini points and bonus points options.

To make it easier to check for possible mini options for your books, I have created another tab on the tracking sheet, listing all the options I could think of this far.
