Cipher Office #2

Sticking to the Script

Rate this book
Steven Thompson had a bad year. A string of mean, kinky (the alarming kind, not the good kind), and crazy dating debacles combined with a boss who appears to be experiencing male-prenatal-psychosis means Steven’s stress levels are high. They’re so high, he’s decided to quit dating and focus instead solely on his job.

Until he meets Dr. Ken Miles.

Doctor Ken Miles is having a fantastic year. His hard work is paying off in a big way... professionally. But his social life? Not so much.

Until he meets Steven Thompson.

Steven isn’t so sure about Dr. Miles, but Ken is one hundred percent certain about Mr. Thompson. And even though both men know full well that the key to getting what you want out of life is hard work, they can’t seem to make them—together—work.

Will they ever get on the same page? Or just keep sticking to the same old script?

Sticking to the Script is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book #2 in the Cipher Office series, Knitting in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

PEOPLE! THIS IS HAPPENING!
July 30, 2020
Audio – 5 Stars
Story – 2.5 Stars

Ugh! Not the best way to start a review but…ugh!!!!

The story started off so strong. The relationship development between Steven and Ken was funny and endearing. I was on cloud swoon and then the drama started. 😤 Ugh! Not just the kind of drama that’s expected in a new relationship, but unnecessary nonsensical drama! The kind that takes a 5-star rating down to 2.5 stars!!

👎🏽Lies and secrets
👎🏽The overdone cliché stalker angle
👎🏽The TSTL MC decisions
👎🏽Side character drama (like who cares!! Give them their own book)
👎🏽Too many side characters gossiping and giving unwanted opinions
👎🏽Unaccepting family members

Such great potential wasted. ☹ I rounded up to 3 stars because of the narrator’s great performance and the sweet epilogue.

The idea of being with someone who could pull back the curtain and see my inner workings, was both thrilling and frightening. But knowing he liked what he was seeing, meant more to me than if he were enamored with the best, polished version of myself.

For the most part, Steven Thompson has a pretty sweet life. A job he loves working for Cipher Security, a kickass apartment in a building owned by his surly and brooding boss, Quinn, and a stable of loyal and entertaining friends to spend his free time with. Unfortunately, what he doesn’t have is a special man. After one too many blind dates turned screwy and/or dangerous, Steven’s given up on meeting anyone for the time being. Sure, he may not be looking for a relationship right now, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t find Dr. Ken Miles (DKM here on out) sexy AF in an uptight, straight guy kinda way.

So here’s the deal; DKM is bisexual. Sure, he doesn’t advertise the fact he’s attracted to both men and women, but he’s certainly open to a relationship with whomever peeks his interest. After the disastrous way his personal and professional relationship played out with Elizabeth, Steven’s good friend, DKM can understand why Steven assumes he’s not interested. Now, if only Ken could find a way to let Steven know he’s interested in more than just the occasional awkward coffee house run in or the uncomfortable dinner party conversation.

Sticking to the Script was a not what I expected in the very best way. As soon as I figured out who Ken was (see Friends Without Benefits) the light went on and I audibly (loudly, if I’m being honest ) said “Ooooooohhhh!”

I’m not going to lie, DKM did nothing to endear himself to me the first time around but luckily, we get the DKM unvarnished and striped down version in this story. I loved Steven and Ken together, even through the awkwardness and the lack of communication at times. From beginning to end, the growth and evolution of both characters was front and center and I truly felt Sticking to the Script ended up being a wonderful story about making a relationship work, even when insecurities pop up because, deep down, you know it’s worth it. I thought Ken might get the majority of the “coming into your own” storylines, but Steven surprised me in his own way as well.

I really enjoyed Sticking to the Script and was pleasantly surprised by the mix of in-depth emotion and light-hearted good times. Though it was fun to reconnect the DKM dots via Penny Reid’s Knitting series, this book works beautifully as a standalone.

I Read The ARC Of This Book Last Night,
Or,
The Dangers Of Reading A Really Good Book At Night.

– – –

First off the bat, let me assure you:

This book is fantastic. Brilliant, even.

You wouldn't know this for a debut novel. Stella writes with depth and maturity, and Steven is one of the kindest, funniest, and snarkiest characters I have ever encountered. His observations are delightful and almost Wodehouse-ian in their incisiveness and hilarity. As for DKM... DKM, oh DKM. There really is no one quite like you.

Which brings us to the very real danger that attends Those Who Read At Night:

Suffocation.

You see, once the clock ticks past 10 PM, all good citizens go to sleep and must not be awoken beforetimes.

Which means that you – the Discerning Reader – when faced with intelligent pathos and humour in equal measure, must perforce use your pillow to smother your laughter and soak up your tears (and snot) as you read. (Or, you know. You can laugh and cry aloud. After 10 PM. Like a jerk.)

But laugh and cry you will.

5 irreducible stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This story made me laugh... and cry. It got me with all sorts of feelings, and left me so happy with the outcomes. I loved the inclusion of characters and storylines that readers of Penny Reid's #KnittingInTheCity series will be familiar with and the perfect way it all ties together whilst being able to be read as a stand-alone.

Sticking To The Script may have started off as #fanfiction and is now #Pennyverse cannon but Steven and Ken's relationship stands on its own two feet as a lovable #MMromance and I ADORED it! It's sweet, and witty, and cute, and funny, and perfect in aaaaaalllllll the ways you want it to be.

This may be Stella Weaver's first book but it definitely should not (& better not) be her last. I certainly hope she continues to write MM/gay romance because she's bloody good at it and I Want More!

I think this is meant to be funny, but it barely made my mouth twitch.

DNF 50% bc you don’t skip the SEX!!!1 why a handjob and no sex???? It was so frustrating I had to quit right away. Ugh! Maybe with some good steam it could have been 4 stars, but def not 5.

OK, update:

I did finish it, bc as I read more I came to "the sex." It wasn't what I wanted. rather brief as well, but somewhat satisfying.

The melodrama blowout toward the end did pull at my heartstrings. Even if it made me kinda hate Steven. Sooooo contrived!!

I love DKM tho. He's the sweetheart of this book!

Full disclosure – I have a history with this story and the super gorgeous author who wrote it. In 2016 I did my first NaNoWrimo (and won, woohoo!), there was a small support group of participants (established authors, aspiring authors, and hobby wordsmiths like me) of this crazy challenge who came from the Penny Reid Readers Group on Facebook.  And for a month we slogged away and wrote the words, including Stella Weaver. I sort of knew who she was from the reader group, and she was always supportive, and just generally lovely. But she didn’t share much on what she was working on, past it was a Penny Reid fanfiction. And then she shared a couple of chapters of her WIP and I was completely captured by her words.

In early 2017 she released her complete fanfiction to the world. And people, it was brilliant. It was one of my favourite reads for the whole yeah. I even messaged her, annoyed her with my gushing, and forced friendship on her. This was fanfiction and I was totally enthralled. I rec’d that fanfiction like it was nobody’s business.*

Fast forward two and a half years (including mentions in Penny Reid’s ‘Marriage of Inconvenience’ that turned Steven and Ken from fanfiction into canon) and we’re here. I looked up the original message I sent Stella and I am having those exact same feelings all over again and more because, here’s a secret, this version is even better!

This woman can write, it’s expressive, fluid, joyful, funny, soulful, authentic, poignant and brilliant.

For those Penny Reid fans out there, and I know there’s a lot of you, this book perfectly slots into the Knitting in the City universe. And on its own, it's just a brilliant little gem of a book.

I don’t think anyone who knows this series would have paired Steven Thompson and Dr. Ken Miles (DKM). But it works. Stella took two established characters, and made them her own while being totally respectful and authentic to the source material.Getting to know both men is a joy. They’re likeable characters from the start, both wanting the same thing, and realizing they can get that with each other. Granted, one took a little longer to figure it out than the other.

But beware, Ken Miles will slay you with his words. He’s always dropping little one-liners that just melt your heart. The other facets of Ken that Stella has created have given us such a rich and wonderful character – from the stiff not-Nico from Penny’s 'Friends without Benefits' – that’s he slotted himself as one of all time favourites.  His whole family is a lot of fun to read too.

And this book is so smart. I’m in awe that Stella could weave factoids, trivia, science, popular culture altogether and not just sort have a messy pile of stuff that could overwhelm her readers. And she also includes drama, jokes, Wally the dog who seems to belong to everyone at Cipher, characters from other Cipher books, romance, a grumpy boss, and chemistry you can almost touch. It’s a lot to piece together but everything is handled with the same precision and skill as a surgeon with a scalpel.

I’m excited for what this new, indie-press ‘Smartypants Romance’ will give us. There are 11 other Penny Reid ‘canon’ books releasing with Stella’s over two months, by a variety of debut and established authors. And if Stella is the standard, I’m going to be lost in those books for a little while.

I cannot wait for more.

* the fanfiction on Wattpad is no longer available. You don’t need it. Trust me.

I didn't care much about the read to make it to the end due to this sadly being another dud. From the plot to the characters, nothing gathered my attention and it lacked that certain spark to really immerse me into the storyline. Unfortunately I'm sad to report that I have decided to drop this because it's quite obvious I wasn't the targeted audience for this line of work.

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) ok, first things first... I struggled for a while with how exactly I want to rate this book, and in the end I decided on 4,5 stars... it's not that there's something wrong with this book that made me lower my rating... I can't quite put my finger on why I can't just give in and mark those 5 full stars, so it's probably a "me" thing... to be honest, I have been struggling lately with reading in general, so yeah... there's that... now that we have this weird explanation out of the way, let's just dive into the actual review so I can tell you about all the amazing qualities that this story has and why I loved it :)

Ok, so technically this can be read as a complete standalone but since it's a sort of spin-off / companion story to Penny Reid's Knitting in the city series, we have appearances of a lot of couples from those books... plus, we met both main heroes from this one at one point or another in that original series... but again, you get all the necessary informations here, so you can enjoy this story without reading anything else before it ;) but from the perspective of someone who already read that original series, it was absolutely delightful to see certain characters in a scene here and there... also, if you're curious this story takes place a bit before and during "Marriage of incovenience" which is the seventh and last book in Knitting in the city series :) ok, now I feel like we can dive into my actual review :)

I have to admit, I heard about the story between Steven and Ken for a while now... I believe it started as a bit of a fanfic on Wattpad but then it developed into this gem within what I like to call a Pennyverse, where different authors wrote stories set in places Penny created or about some of the secondary characters from her novels... don't worry, it's all being done with her knowledge and approval so no violation of copyrights or stuff like that is happening... ok, back to the story :) I remember that I loved Steven as a secondary character when I met him before, but it was Ken who actually surprised me... I mean, Steven is this openly gay man, who seems comfortable in his own skin and always knows what to say to difuse a situation... he was charming and funny and easily likeable... Ken on the other hand... well, if you've read some of the original books, he doesn't make a great first impression... but once I was able to get inside his head and see things from his perspective... *sighs* I really connected with him... I could relate to a lot of his struggles and thoughts and it really moved me... he keeps people at a certain distance but not for the reasons most of them think... he can be so funny and open with people he feels safe with and just... that's one of many reasons why I felt very close to him and wanted to see his happy ending... another great reason why this book was amazing is how many themes it touched upon... besides the romance part, we see how Ken and people close to him handle the fact that he identifies as bisexual... how sexual assault affects men, which I think is such an important thing to write about... and that's just a few :) another phenomenal thing is how complex our both main characters are... there's no easy way to describe them because the more we read the more we get to know about them... let's just say that I adored how wonderfully flawed they were... both of them made decisions and did things that annoyed me at the moment, and yet at the same time I could understad why they did it... and of course there were times when I was charmed by them and couldn't stop smiling :) all in all I can highly recommend you guys to check out this story ;) it's a lovely mix of funny and emotional that will keep you glued to the pages because you will just have to know how it will end ;) don't start reading it too late in the day, or you will lose sleep... just saying, you've been warned ;)

XOXO

A sweet and spicy M/M romance that fits in seamlessly with the Knitting in the City world. Get ready for the feels and squeals, people.

I can't imagine it's easy to take a fan-favorite character (like Steven) and develop his backstory, history, inner musings, while also tackling the job of providing his happily ever after. And to pair him with a character who could use a little redemption in the eyes of the Penny Reid community....no small feat. Well, I guess debut author Stella Weaver likes a challenge because she did all of the above and absolutely NAILED IT.

As a Penny Reid fan, I was unbelievably excited for Steven to get a story. Stella takes his character and gives him the future he deserves by pairing him with Ken (or DKM, as he will forever be known). DKM ended up stealing the show for me. He's sweet and vulnerable, honest and principled--basically everything I love in a fictional hero. Weaver takes two standout characters and pairs them in an unexpected way that totally works.

Sticking to the Script breathes life into Steven and Ken, and allows them to stand on their own. It's an amazing thing that Stella does...to take characters created by someone else and enhance them while also adhering to their truth. This story clicks with the Penny Reid world. The attention to detail speaks to an author dedicated to her craft and someone who is obviously a true fan. I'm excited to see this book added to the smart romance arsenal--because it's 100% that. Sticking to the Script addresses bisexuality and the stigmas attached. This was eye-opening for me as a reader, and I'm so happy to have a better understanding of these topics through Steven and Ken's journey.

The Cipher Office is a great place to be. I, for one, am thrilled to be back in Chicago visiting with some of my very favorite characters and gaining new ones in the process.

" I wanted my spouse to be my partner, my motivator, my cheerleader. And I wanted to do the same, be the same for someone. "

This is a really different but really beautiful book. The story of Steven and Ken was sweet, heartbreaking and wonderful.
We have already met their characters through Penny Reid Books and I loved how the author wrote their story, keeping their personalities as well as the other characters as AWESOME as Penny Reid Created them.

The book is unique, It discussed many IMPORTANT and problematic concepts, such as, Sexual and physical assault toward men, which we don't read about enough...

" Men get hurt too, Steven, "
Quinn said with uncharacteristic gentleness. " It doesn't mean they are weak or that they deserve it "

It also talked about the bi people ( the struggles, hurtful experiences and words ) they face almost daily

" I'm sorry I said those things "
He shook his head sadly. " I don't want you to live your life for other people. we didn't raise you that way. I had no right to make you feel like you should or that there's anything wrong with being who you are "

Steven's character was amazing, realistic, sweet, friendly and just ... AWESOME.
Ken's character also was amazing, complicated, strong, protective, romantic and quiet.

Very interesting and beautiful read .

This book needs a content warning for biphobia.

Not only are there numerous biphobic comments made throughout, but there are three raging, biphobic rants... one of which comes from our leading man, Steven.

He's confused, he's experimenting, he's straight when dating a woman and gay when dating a man, dating a man is a novelty, he's gay and afraid to come out, he will pick a woman and a womb in the end, he's selfish, he wants to keep his options open, etc.

When Steven's friend Ernesto warns him off dating a bi man, stating, "Look, I don't need to tell you why this is a bad idea. I can tell you really like him, just make sure he's not using you to experiment with, okay?" , Steven does get upset... but in the end, he is the one who apologizes to Ernesto. I'm sorry, what?

But then, this is the same man who encouraged his boyfriend to play the straight, single man and go to his sister's wedding alone after she went off on a rant:

"What, so you're gay now? [...] What I know is that you went through an experimental phase in college but that you got over it when Dad set you straight. [...]When you show up with this guy on your arm at my wedding, what do you think is going to happen, hmm? [...] The only thing anyone will be thinking about is which of you is the woman in the relationship. [...] If the only way I can get you to come to my wedding is to allow you to ruin it, I'm not left with a great choice, am I?"

And in the end, hardly anyone acknowledges, let alone apologizes for, their biphobic comments.

Biphobic bullshit aside....

This is one of those books in a series that "can be read as a standalone" that can't really. I didn't really register that the Cipher series is written by two authors about another author's series... Penny Reid's Knitting in the City series. It's not like Steven just works with these people and that they have the odd cameos... their lives and their stories are interwoven into this one. Janie & Quinn, Elizabeth & Nicco, Kat & Dan. There is a lot of talk of Elizabeth's stalker that Ken shot, that obviously must have happened in her and Nicco's book. There is the whole drama of Kat the heiress, and her marriage of convenience. These characters are so interwoven into this story that there was a huge disconnect for me as a reader. It isn't even until the 30th chapter that we are actually explicitly told that Cipher Systems as a business is housed in the same building that pretty much everyone has their apartment in. If this had focused more on Steven & Ken, and the side plot of the stalker King, this could have been decent (if you ignore the biphobic cast).

Ken and Steven aren't really likeable. In fact, Steven is downright unlikable. His nicknames are often rude, not cute or witty. He is biphobic. He is judgemental and assumes the worst of everyone. Funny enough, Ken is supposed to be the rude, condescending one... but I think that description suits Steven more.

The first three weeks of their relationship is also off page. Which might actually be a good thing, because the sex scenes were horrible. I brought my lubricated fingers to his entry. His entry. But even though they've been dating for weeks, and acquainted only very briefly before that, it's love.

Steven also invoke's Thor a lot. Does he worship the Norse gods or is this supposed to be another witty Steve thing?

Also, a 'reverse S' is a 'S'. 15K isn't a half marathon. A bomb prank isn't funny (but it is a felony).

So grateful to receive this ARC! This book was seriously great. It was so heartfelt and hilarious. Sticking to the Script is the first MM romance I have read and it didn’t disappoint. The connection between Dr. Ken Miles and Steven was perfect. I never would have thought to put those two together but it made perfect sense. Their relationship felt real and they just clicked. Steven’s inner thoughts cracked me up. This book fits perfectly into the Penny universe and I loved seeing the KitC crowd. I wish I could work in the Cipher Office. This also made me really want to read Marriage of Inconvenience again. Looking forward to more books from Stella Weaver.

Huzzah for queerness in the Smartypants universe

This was a heart-felt story of the erasure of bisexuality that really touched me. I loved that nose-picking Dr Ken Miles and obligatory-gay-best-friend Steven got to become fully-realized characters full of humor, vulnerability & chemistry.

I do want to go back and read Janie, Elizabeth & Kay’s Kitting in the City books again, but it isn’t necessary to read them in order to enjoy this delightful story that’s full of secrets, family drama, suspense, friendships, teasing, love and a well-earned HEA.

Wow! All I can say is STICKING TO THE SCRIPT by Stella Weaver is a fantastic book. The writing is inspired, the pacing is spot on, emotions and humour are woven thoughtfully throughout the narrative; in short, it’s one heck of a page turner.

I am aware that this book started off as Penny Reid fan-fiction but even with all the positive feedback I never read it because although I loved the Steven Thompson character, Dr. Ken Miles was one of those characters I loved to hate. And I was content to leave it at that. What a fool I was! This is one of the most stirring romances I have read in quite some time.

While this book takes place in Penny Reid’s Knitting in the City (KITC) world, it more than holds its own as a standalone book. I think fans will love how well this story intertwines with other KITC books and characters. And new readers will certainly not miss out because there is more than enough detail given to ensure you are never lost.

Most importantly, this book is about Steven and Ken, and I appreciated the chance to know them better. Through their personal and professional struggles, we get a story about two men who are both tired of casual relationships, tired of secrets, and tired of keeping up appearances. They want to find “the one” and it seems they have in each other, but it’s certainly not all smooth sailing. I loved how articulate these characters were. Their conversations – even the hurtful ones – felt so genuine and powerful. Their feelings were sincere and authentic. In the best of ways, Steven and Ken really were made for each other. Who knew? Not me. It took Stella Weaver’s story to open my eyes to this wonderful couple.

I read this book on Wattpad a couple years ago and I can never forget the excitement while I was reading it. I loved Penny Reid the most and finding an extension of her universe PLUS a unique but well-written story? Couldn’t have asked for more.

Stella Weaver is the main reason why I’m excited for the rest of Smartypants Romance and I’m gonna love reading this as much as I did the first time. ❤️

All of the heartfelt, hilarious, and steamy stars!

What started as a delicious bite of fan fiction has blossomed into its own gorgeous novel. The most unlikely pairing for the Penny Reid universe is a sweet and sexy story that makes it clear Steven Thompson and Dr. Ken Miles are meant to be together.

In addition to all the delightful banter, both characters struggle with significant issues they are forced to confront. Issues that can bring them closer together or tear them apart. All of it felt real, heartbreaking, and showed that characters can grow and change but still maintain who they are at their core.

Stella Weaver has brought her distinct voice to the Pennyverse and gifted us with alternate perspectives to events from Marriage of Inconvenience. However, this story easily stands on its own.

Make sure this one is on your pre-order list!

Thank you Stella Weaver for sharing an early copy of your amazing book with me!

This is the first leading couple from Pennyverse where we know both characters from previous books.
It was steamy, cheeky, adorable, weird, cute...
I loved Steven in KITC series but here I fell in love with Ken too.
Stella Weaver did a good job with this book. I would like a bit more grovel at the end...

"5 - You need to trust me, Stars!"

This was a REALLY. GOOD. READ!

I wasn't too sure about "Doctor Ken Mile's" (or DKM for short) story.
He really didn't leave a very appealing or positive impression in Friends Without Benefits. He was actually kinda a dick.
I knew from reading Neanderthal Seeks Human that Steven's story would be interesting, funny, a little over the top and entertaining.

I went into reading this story with an open mind. My only preparation was reading the synopsis. I wanted the characters to tell me their story. I wanted to be engaged, be taken on their journey, and entertained.

SUCCESS!! This book was everything I love in a story!

This story was one of building friendships, honesty, and most importantly - trust.
These characters were beautiful to read.
Their relationship evolved from friendship to lovers and in the process, they each had to remove their walls. Be raw and naked and transparent with their feelings, insecurities and fears.

I love when a story still runs through my mind days after finishing it.
My favourite parts pop in my mind and I want to go re-read that part again. (Thank you Kindle for highlighting!)

Wonderful story!
Wonderful characters!
Wonderful writing!

I was so excited when I saw this book. I had previously read early versions of some of this story. I was very impressed the with Stella Weaver's finished book! It's hard to believe that this is her first published work. As a SmartyPants Romance based in the Pennyverse, I had previously read about the main characters, Steven and Dr. Ken, as well as many of the supporting characters in Penny Reid's Knitting in the City series. I always had a soft spot for Stephen Thompson, who was a good friend to so many of the KitC main characters. Dr. Ken Miles, however, was not my idea of a promising guy. I was so impressed with the way Stella Weaver took these characters, and developed both of them into well-defined characters, with back stories, families, strengths, and weaknesses. We see Steven become very vulnerable, and making some bad choices. Stella took Dr. Ken, and made him not only a sympathetic character, but also allowed him to shine, and really step up when he was needed.

I enjoyed the story Stella Weaver created for Steven and Dr Ken, and I also loved reading about our old friends from Knitting in the City. Her story included snippets and looks into the ongoing lives of the Cipher team, and the KitC women. Through it all, Stella retained the integrity of Penny Reid's characters, while enhancing this world with her own creativity and insights.

I highly recommend Sticking to the Script, and I look forward to reading more books from Stella Weaver.

This story is funny and smart and swoony. I laughed out loud and highlighted so many favorite parts. My only complaint is I want more! More of Steven and Doctor Ken and more from this author!!

“I was officially ridiculous, but I didn’t care.  I couldn’t stop smiling. I smiled while I showered, I smiled while I made coffee, I smiled while I ate breakfast.  It made chewing a little difficult, but there was no stopping it.”

Sticking to the Script far exceeded my expectations! I was hesitant when first starting this story as I thought it'd be about a jaded man, swearing off romance - I've never been so excited to be wrong. This book would be better enjoyed if you've previously read the Knitting In The City series, but can definitely be read as a stand alone. The second book in the Cipher Office series, it brings back characters that you've already met and loved in Weight Expectations.

Steve and Dr. Ken Miles!

When an author takes a character you were exasperated with and lets you step into his world in a way that lets you love him (I’m looking at you, Dr. Ken Miles), all the while keeping you laughing and feeling So Many Feels, you must show your love and appreciation. I loved this book so much! If you love Knitting in the City, you need to read this.

1. Very happy to have finally found a romance with a bisexual main character! 🤩
2. Steven (and this book) was hilarious and - as he would say - an absolute delight.
3. This whole universe is amazing to read about. I love how so many of the storylines overlap and how all the different characters keep returning, especially in this one!

Sticking to the Script
by Stella Weaver is a release by Smartypants Romance which tells stories within Penny Reid's Knitting In the City (KITC) universe. Steven Thompson has an amazing job and great friends but falls short when it comes to romance. Dr. Ken Miles lives a solitary life consisting of mostly work and exercise. Steven and Ken find themselves drawn to each other after a few surprise interactions. As they get to know each other and their feelings grow both men find secrets and life are pulling them apart. Can they put their fears and secrets behind them to really embrace each other or will real problems keep them apart.

"The idea of being with someone who could pull back the curtain and see my inner workings, was both thrilling and frightening."

Steven Thompson is a funny character that you only have a base knowledge of from KITC. He works with Janie and is close with Kat but you don't get into his personal life. This book dives deep and you learn about his quirky dating history and how he just wants a romantic partner to balance his life of friends and work. Dr. Ken Miles pops up in his life, and he thinks there's no chance someone as amazing (and weird) as Ken would be interested in anything besides an odd friendship. Steven is in for a real surprise as he becomes Ken's point of focus and affection.

"Your face in mine short-circuits my brain."

Dr. Ken Miles is a bit of an enigma. He is weird, rude and stuffy on the outside but when you get to know him he's an odd combination of sweet, emotional and a little possessive. He believes in commitment and falling in love and when he falls, he is full steam ahead. He lets his feelings for Steven consume him and blocks out the problems with himself and their relationship. His single-minded focus on Steven comes off as unusual but the way he expresses his feelings makes it just seem sweet and wonderful.

"He pressed his forehead to mine and whispered, "Kiss Me""

The story is paced where you get the full insider knowledge of how each feels as their relationship changes and grows. The beginning tended to drag for me a bit but around the halfway mark it picked up and moved at a more steady pace. The romance is sexy but sweet and you feel that it adds to the story. Overall, Sticking to the Script was a unique mm contemporary romance, and I am interested in reading other books by Stella Weaver.

"He was mine. He was perfect and amazing, and I took a moment to recognize that I was staring at the rest of my life-- took a long. Reverential look at the man who owned me."
