I read this sometime in 2015-2018
The main character is one of the people who participates in this series of challenges. ( I think there were 3 challenges but I'm not sure). I'm pretty sure that one of the challenges had something to do with mining but I could be wrong. Most if not all of her family members are mad at the fact that they have to win challenges to get the inheritance.
I'm fairly certain that when the person who had the money died family members went to his or her will reading and were shocked at the fact that they did not get money out right and had to do the challenges.

It's neither of these. The main character was definitely a family member who was up to possible inherit money for the first time.
