Feb 2021 READER Nominations

This thread is for nominations for READER category for February 2021.

READER books need to be
* currently in print in either hardback or paperback (or both). Requiring a special order from a store or website counts, but not if the book is only available used.
* currently available in multiple ebook formats, from multiple vendors
* Space Opera, which means a spaceship has to be involved in the story somewhere.
* If it is part of a series, it needs to be suitable to being read without having read other books in the series.
* Please no blatantly erotic books, as some of our members are not full adults yet.

RULES:
* you may nominate one book on this thread.
* you may second as many nominations as you like on this thread.
* it is okay to nominate the same book on more than one nomination thread, as long as it meets the criteria
* books we already have on our bookshelf will be disqualified if they were added less than two years ago
* If a book you nominate or second is selected, you are expected to post at least one comment about it on the thread about the book.
* In about two weeks I will draw a book randomly, with each second being one raffle ticket for the book. That is, a book with three seconds (so four of us want it) will get three chances in the pool.

It is likely helpful if you know something about a book that has been nominated if you mention it in this thread, whether it is for or against the book.

Sorry I am still in the series Star Scavengers by J. G. Ogden and will be reading all 5 books through the end of Jan and probably through Feb. I love these stories and want to join up to be a Relic Hunter. Oh what an imagination this author has with a whole new line of stories and great characters and now there is an AI that is believable that walks and talks and changes and along with all the bad guys there s a real monster on the horizon. OMG I love these stories from chapter to chapter. How did I ever miss these when they first came out.

M is that a nomination for the first book in the Star Scavengers series? Nominations and seconds are more about “do you want to discuss this book” than about reading the book in the designated month.

I’ll second Half Share by Nathan Lowell. Definitely worth rereading, although I prefer the books right before (Quarter Share) and after (Full Share) it.

Hi, Teresa. As a newbie I'm a little confused about book nominations. I recently finished Babylon's Ashes by James SA Corey and would enjoy discussing it. The thread you bumped was for "Reader" nominations. The rules say books are not eligible for nomination if they've been put on the bookshelf within the past two years. I can see that this particular Expanse Series book is on the bookshelf but don't know how to tell when it was put there. Bookshelf entries don't appear to lead to discussion threads on the books themselves. Am I missing how to see that?

There were a lot of things I liked about Babylon's Ashes and a few I didn't care for. Is discussing it of interest to others?

Patrick, we discussed Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey in 2014 and apparently again in 2015. You are welcome to nominate that book for Reader Pick, or if Babylon's Ashes works as an entry point of the series, nominate that one. If there is interest then someone will second it.

Like most series, a reader will be scratching their heads periodically when picking up a series book midstream. That said, one of the book's pluses is how well the authors feather in the needed backstory. And, per your earlier comment about discussing versus reading, I would like to nominate Babylon's Ashes for discussion in February.

I've just started The Last Astronaut by David Wellington (2019 publication I believe). I find it fascinating. If it's been a Group Read, then I'll try Artemis by Andy Weir (which I haven't read but mean to soon).

I’m counting this as a nomination for The Last Astronaut by David Wellington.

If memory serves, Artemis isn’t what most people mean by space opera. It all takes place on the moon, right? So it’s a long shot. If multiple members want to discuss it I’ll allow it though.
