Oh, I forgot to say I listened to The Test the other day while driving with Pete. We both thought it was outstanding. Very edgy and dark. Can't wait to see what this writer does next.

I bailed on The Mystery of Edwin Drood within minutes of starting. I just can't... I will start The Queen's Gambit instead. I need to read this for our real life book club.
Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan is a little gem that tells a big story. Excellent!

Family is the first in Owen Mullen's new Glass Family series. Two crime families vie for supremacy, but don't think the Glass siblings are the good guys!

I finished Gods of Jade and Shadow. I didn't like it as much as her Mexican Gothic.I will start Wake of Vultures today. I'm starting a new slate of books today.
Margo wrote: "Oh, I forgot to say I listened to The Test the other day while driving with Pete. We both thought it was outstanding. Very edgy and dark. Can't wait to see what this writer does next."I like him. I have two unread from him. I am debating using one of them for my museum challenge.
I am finally resuming reading The Labyrinth of the Spirits after finishing Thunderstruck, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter and Turning Angel.I just downloaded the audiobook for Ink and Bone for the group read. I wanted to read the other group read choice more, but my library hold is still weeks away.
I have not picked a book for the monthly challenge. I am still looking for a cover that I remember seeing, but have not found -yet.
I also just started In This House of Brede. This is for the nun task on my museum challenge. Just trying to get a handle on the MC.
I'm currently reading The Last House on Needless Street
and
The Orphan Witch. The Last House on Needless Street has been interesting and is quite a curious story. I have a theory as to what's going on, but I'm not completely convinced that I'm correct.
The Orphan Witch has been a little slow-going, which was unexpected. There is too much detail of the spells and learning process for me. The best analogy I can make is if you were reading Harry Potter and had to sit through all his lessons with him while he was learning about magic and spells in addition to his outside adventures. There has also been a strange love interest added to the mix. I haven't decided what I think about it yet, but the MC's thoughts about the other person are pretty repetitive, which I don't care for. Overall, it's not bad, just not quite what I was expecting or hoping for. I'm less than halfway through though, so it could still turn out well.
I finished The Twelve. What a fantastic series!I'm still reading The Labyrinth of the Spirits for the buddy read. It is as well written as the previous three. I love to be back in Barcelona, although the time when the book is set it is not the funniest of the times there.
I am listening to Obabakoak and happily surprised by it.
I finished Wake of Vultures last night. I was dreading this book, but it fit a challenge task so I hesitantly took it up, only to be surprised at how entertained I was. It is not literary fiction by any stretch of the imagination. It's a western with a transgendered boy who becomes a paranormal monster hunter. There is a shopping list of paranormal creatures including a few new ones. I will start Gone South tonight for my challenge read.
I've also started Over the Falls. I'm enjoying it, but I think I can see quite a bit of what's coming. But who knows, maybe I'll be surprised.
I'm loving the Monkeewrench series by P.J. Tracy, thanks to all the readers who recommended them. Dead Run is chock-a-block with nail-biting thrills!

The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean is confronting, excellent suspense told by a captive Vietnamese 'bride'. I don't know how he did it, but she sounds real!

I finished my audiobook yesterday, The Queen's Gambit. I thought it was an okay read, It was a bit dry with all the talk of chess moved.I will start the group themed read The Shadow of What Was Lost today.
I finished The Orphan Witch
and gave it 2.5 stars (rounded up). Not a terrible book really. It just wasn't for me. I expected something different and was disappointed. my Orphan Witch review
Janice wrote: "I finished my audiobook yesterday, The Queen's Gambit. I thought it was an okay read, It was a bit dry with all the talk of chess moved...."That was partly my issue with The Orphan Witch, but it was descriptions of magic. Sort of like sitting through class with her.
I have just started The Pumpkin Seed Massacre. I am just a couple of chapters in so early days.Confession: I am a sucker for a good cover. In another bookclub, we are supposed to read a book with either the words pumpkin, spice or latte in the title or a title inspired by those words. I had The Pumpkin Seed Massacre in my TBR list. It is a mystery focused on the Pueblos and the fact that all of the elders of the tribe are dying off. It is an intense and so far, a very good read. I am really enjoying it!
While “gophering,” I came across this trilogy. The covers sucked me in. I thought they might be cozy mysteries. They are not! They were so not my reading preference. Beware! . The Cottage on Pumpkin and Vine, The Bakeshop at Pumpkin and Spiceand The Café Between Pumpkin and Pie
I just finished The Last House on Needless Street
It was really good. Pretty intense and creepy, very curious. my Needless Street review
I've just enjoyed stories by a couple of excellent authors, and I've included download links for both.Switzerland by Nicole Krauss is about a thirteen-year-old American boardingschool girl in Switzerland who has her eyes opened by two exotic eighteen-year-olds.

I've only just discovered Claire Keegan, so I quickly grabbed her story The Forester's Daughter. An Irish farmer woos a woman with tales of his fine home, but when she sees his uncared for old house, she tells some tales of her own.

I am reading and lovingThe Mirror & the Light Reading about Henry the Vii is a comfort read for me. I know whats gonna happen. It is always the same. I sometime need to that. Yet I need a fresh take on the storyThis is the third in the series telling the story from Cromwell point of view. It is well written. I would recommend this series
I finished my challenge selection, Gone South at 2:00 this morning. LOL! My library hold came through and I've downloaded it to my iPad. I will start reading Smoke Bitten tonight. That will finish off this series until the next installment due in 2022.
I've fallen a bit behind on the Mercy Thompson series. I'm up to Silence Fallen, which I own. I really need to get back to it soon. What did you think of the last couple of books, Janice?
Oh! Oh! For some reason, I thought I had read Book 11, Storm Cursed. I have it marked down in my series tracker that I've read it, but the book page doesn't show it. Nor does my monthly planning notes. Weird! Soooo.... I just purchased it and will read it next. I borrowed Smoke Bitten from the library and it goes back in 3 weeks. Storm Cursed is currently out and I'd have to put a hold on it. Crazy!I liked Silence Fallen well enough, but I think I'm ready for the series to be done.
That's how I felt too. I enjoy the books, but I'm kind of done with it at the same time. Maybe it'll be a good thing for you to catch up with two books right in a row. It might just feel like one long one, plus hopefully you'll be riding the 'that was a good book' high and want to keep going instead of thinking 'oh geez, another in that series I haven't read yet?' I think it's harder to get back in the mood for it after you wait a while.
I may just call it done once I finish Smoke Bitten. They seem to be getting predictable. (view spoiler)
Janice wrote: "I may just call it done once I finish Smoke Bitten. They seem to be getting predictable. [spoilers removed]"Have you guys checked out the Alpha & Omega books? I have only read the first two but I they are fun and are in the same world as Mercy, but focus on Bran's son Charles and his mate. The first one was not as good as the second one. They are different enough from the Mercy books that it doesn't feel like more of the same, but I like being the Mercy world
I am listening to The Bones Beneath My Skin. I am not that far in but am already loving it. I am so excited for Under the Whispering Door to come out! Audible is also releasing the second of their Sandman adaptations (The Sandman: Act II) and I am SOOOO excited for that one too! The first one was absolutley amazing and I love the graphic novel series. I wasn't sure how well they would transfer to an audiobook, but audible did an amazing job!
Janice wrote: "I may just call it done once I finish Smoke Bitten. They seem to be getting predictable. [spoilers removed]"btw Smoke Bitten was one of my favorites of the series
Of course Smoke Bitten would be the best one. Lol Right when we’re thinking about quitting the series… I’ve considered Alpha & Omega, but I’m just not really interested in starting another similar series.

I haven't yet. I've seen the book reviews and thought it might be fun to check them out.

Hans Christian Andersen is depicted as a dreamy, imaginative boy by Maxine Lee-Mackie in this colourful addition to the little people BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. Such fun to be reminded of his world-famous stories.Hans Christian Andersen 5★ Link to my review of Hans Christian Andersen with several illustrations
Maybe I shouldn't have read this one on its own, but Us Against You (Beartown #2) by Fredrik Backman was available. Way too preachy for me. Sorry to all the fans.

I’m reading Harlem Shuffle and listening to Three Apples Fell from the Sky. I need to get to my window gazing read soon! Finished Silent Winds, Dry Seas - enjoyed this debut novel by Vinod Busjeet. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I just finished Ink and Bone. It was really good, but leaves you with a "to be continued..." ending. There are 5 books in the series and I guess you have to read them all to find out what happens. I also found two very short stories online and I'm looking forward to reading them. I just started Under the Whispering Door and It seems like it will be a quick read. I enjoy Klune's writing.
I'm also still reading Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage, and Manners.
I am almost finished, but I have enjoyed the characters and the Abbey life in In This House of Brede. I am not Catholic but the information about the Benedictine order and the nuns in the story have been so interesting and delightful. It is intelligent and very witty at times. I finished Ink and Bone and The Labyrinth of the Spirits. I liked the first very much but I am disappointed in the author for the ending of the latter.
Catch Us The Foxes by Aussie author Nicola West is a twisty, complicated thriller with a good premise and great atmosphere. It eventually got too weird for me.
2.5~3★ Link to my Catch Us The Foxes review
This very short story by renowned author Ian McEwan is clever and fun and FREE. You can read it or listen to him read My Purple Scented Novel online. Very entertaining and well worth a few minutes.

Finished The Governor: The true story of my life inside Britain’s most notorious prisons: My Life Inside Britain’s Most Notorious Jails

I haven't written what I've been reading on her for ages. Because I'm so slow!! I've been reading lots of self help books this year and now I'm back at work, mental health-related books. There's a lot of crossover though! I've been doing an online course so the books at the moment are supporting that. I won't bore you with those other than the one which is aimed at Joe Public which is The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self-Esteem: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Move Beyond Negative Self-Talk and Embrace Self-Compassion which is very good. Oh and Samaritans: How to Listen: A practical and valuable guide to becoming a better listener (on audible) which was recommended to me and so far, it's really good.I'm also reading The Desert Prince. It's a long book though and may take me a while.
I'll be spending a lot of time in the car today. I plan to listen to The Nature of Fragile Things while traveling. I finished Ink and Bone for the group read. It ends with a "to be continued" and I plan to read the rest of the series to find out what happens. I enjoyed this one a lot. It is a 5 book series, so not too bad.
I am reading Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage, and Manners, but not planning to bring the book with me, so I will put it aside until I get back from my trip.
Instead I will be reading The Santa Suit, which I think will be a good fit for what I'm in the mood for right now.
I'm enjoying listening to Under the Whispering Door and plan to go back to it after finishing my travel book today. So far, it's really good. I don't want to put it aside, but it's probably not fair to make Craig listen to just the end of a book instead of a whole book while driving all day. lol

I'm just reading Under the Whispering Door now, too, Kristie, and enjoying it a lot. I think it would be hard to come in in the middle!
Race Cars: A children's book about white privilege is an illustrated story of two cars, one black and one white, who are best friends. The "committee" keeps making the black car's race longer!

The thriller Falling, by T.J. Newman, has attracted a lot of fans, and I can see why. It would make a terrific movie or mini-series. A terrible dilemma, lots of tension, and some good characters.
