which is 337 on average for book length. However, there was one really long book that I read most of the 900+ pages in 2020: Great North Road.

I haven't. It's probably better to do so, but each story seems to work on its own. Enjoy!

auditioning a book for my real-world book group: Little Sister Death, by William Gay. Just finished a chapter that made me grateful I'm reading it in the daytime.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that reading isn't a race, and while I enjoy watching my read list grow, it is more important that you enjoy your reading time and get something out of it, rather than reading just for the sake of checking off a list (certainly not implying that any other readers do this, I'm speaking from my own competing motivations.) Besides, we all have different reading speeds and free time to do so. Also remember that you're amongst a community of people who love to read. Your list of 12 books compared to the general population is actually quite a lot. Its all about perspective.

Sometimes I will skim a book though - I'm currently reading The Jake Grafton Collection: The Intruders, The Minotaur, Under Siege, and The Red Horseman which has an extreme amount (think Tom Clancy) of descriptions of planes and flying scenes which are boring to me (apologies if they're your cup of tea), but it's a Kindle Collection that's been in my TBR pile for a while and I'm trying to reduce that pile

I've only read 5 (although to be fair, one was 995 pages, and 2 of the others were over 500)
Finished Little Sister Death. If only the author could have finished the novel, it would have been excellent. As it is, some things went unfinished and it shows. Oh well. Not to be read at night, for sure.
Now auditioning another (this is for October's book), The Fellow Travellers and Other Stories, by Sheila Hodgson.

This is part of James Lee Burke's 'Holland' series.
The story is about Aaron Holland Broussard, grandson of former Texas lawman Hackberry Holland. It's narrated by Aaron as an adult, looking back at the troubled summer of 1952, when he was seventeen. The book works fine as a standalone.
Very good story. 4 stars

IQ #5. Isaiah has PTSD and has gone off the rails. So has Ide. Sorry, I have really liked this series but this effort is very poor for several reasons. 1 star, not recommended.

I'm sorry to hear this. I haven't read this one yet, but I like this series (though it's had ups and downs imo).

I've finished The Fellow Travellers and Other Stories, by Sheila Hodgson. It's fun but a bit different.
There are a few stand-alone ghost stories supposedly written in the style of MR James, but after that, James becomes a character who solves supernatural mysteries. I have so much reverence for James as an author that seeing him as a character was just weird.
Yesterday I started Death Casts a Long Shadow by Anthony Gilbert -- a murder mystery, and so far I'm hooked.

In the early 1990s a serial killer was murdering gay men who frequented New York City bars and pick-up spots, but the crimes got little press coverage and passed below most people's radar. Now that true crime has become such a popular genre, Elon Green tells the story of the 'Last Call Killer', who eluded law enforcement for many years.
Interesting and informative. 4 stars

Finished The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra by Vaseem Khan. I was interested because it was rare crime series in India but it was badly written crap with zero cultural understanding of how India works. Rating - 1/5.

Very unusual book taking place in the 4 corners area. Partly a mystery/thriller about 2 moron brothers who steal a map showing the location of valuable Native American artifacts. And also partly an examination of what those artifacts mean. The writing reminded me somewhat of James Lee Burke in it's descriptions of the natural and historical world; although it's probably unfair to compare Peterson to one of the giants of American literature. Parts are a bit slow but the book is definitely recommended. 4 stars.

A mystery bookstore owner compiles a list of eight books that contain perfect murders, and someone seems to be trying to re-create the homicides in real life.
Slow moving but with fun elements. 3 stars

Just a 3-star read for me.

finished Death Casts a Long Shadow (1959), apa Death Takes a Wife. I have to say that it's more than a bit of a disadvantage that this book is #34 in a series; I kind of like getting to know the continuing characters. The thing about Death Casts a Long Shadow is that the timing was spot on -- just when the question came into my head "but what about..." I turn the next couple of pages and voila. This is a good one.
Up next a reread of Double Indemnity then skipping past the next on the list, Murderer of Sleep by Millward Kennedy because I can't find a copy anywhere.
