James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting on THE SHADOWS OF MEN by Abir Mukherjee, the fifth book in his ongoing mystery series featuring former Scotland Yard detective / WWI veteran Captain Sam Wyndham and his intrepid Indian police force Detective Sergeant “Surrender-Not” Banerjee. It is one of the best new series that I have discovered in the last few years.

Last night I finished Back Country by William Fuller, originally published in 1954 and set to be released February 2022. The publishers (Stark House) have this awesome pulp series called Black Gat Books, and this is the latest in that series. Since it's not coming out until then, I'll hold off posting until shortly before, but the gist of it is that a guy is traveling from the west coast of Florida to the east and his car breaks down in some little podunk town that is pretty much controlled by one man, with the expected good ole boy sheriff to do his dirty work.
Mayhem ensues and of course, there's a power struggle. Actually, it was pretty good, but I detest depictions of cockfights so that part was hard to read. Evidently this book was first in a series in its day. Plenty of sleaze but nothing on the scale of James M. Cain's The Cocktail Waitress, which was pure sleaze and not a joy to read. Ick.

In this dual timeline story set in Norway, three roommates adopt a python in 2005, and an 11-year-old girl goes missing in 2017.

Good book for thriller fans looking for something different. 3.5 stars

Patty | 4449 comments I just finished My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The only problem I had was getting into the way he writes. It’s very natural to how people talk. So, some sentences are run-on, and meander. After awhile, I appreciated it.

I really enjoyed -- if that's the right word -- The Only Good Indians, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Right now I'm about 1/3 into Magpie Murders and it enjoying a lot. Horowitz has the feel of Golden Age mysteries down and the mystery itself with all the suspects has hooked me. Doesn't hurt that I go to read a few pages and end up 25, 40, 60 pages deeper without really noticing time going by.

I liked the "golden age" feel of the book within the book in Magpie Murders, but the modern parts, especially the end, just went flat for me.

I'm really enjoying The Village of Eight Graves so far (on p. 66). My crystal ball tells me I'll probably be reading well into the night. I updated my status on this book as follows:

"Well, let's see:

so far we have a rebellious and insane samurai,
a descendant who evidently carried the madness in his genes
a curse on the village
and oh yes ... a crazy nun.

this is so me. :)"

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Rose Code is a moving, well-crafted exploration of the relationship between three very different young women during the chaos of WWII and under the pressures of the most celebrated codebreaking operation in history...interwoven with a spy caper that doesn't live up to what came before it. The heroines' stories are done so well that I forgot I don't usually read relationship dramas, enabling me to dismiss the spy-vs.-spy stuff that enticed me into the book in the first place. I'll probably read another Kate Quinn novel soon -- but next time, I'll know what I'm getting into. Four decrypts and a fragment.

It's really good, so far (at p. 105). I'll offer a very good piece of advice: if you can, make a copy of the page and a half of the section that is called "The Inhabitants of Eight Graves." You'll be flipping back and forth otherwise.
