An old farmhouse in Northern Island, the site of past trauma and a current abusive marriage, may be haunted by the memories.

Excellent thriller. 4 stars

Horowitz and Hawthorne #3, OK to read as a standalone. Another wonderfully entertaining mystery from Mr. Horowitz, this one sort of a big isolated house format, but instead of a house it's an island. I liked it a lot, 4.5 stars.

Dipping into English Country House Murders (actually not by Allingham; she has a story in it but the editor is Thomas Godfrey). Not sure for how long. I'm reading a friend's manuscript (a mystery) and once I've finished I have several to choose from, including Death at La Fenice, The Case of the Baker Street Irregulars, The Guest List, A Puzzle for Fools: A Peter Duluth Mystery, Golden Age Detective Stories, Not Safe After Dark: And Other Stories -- really a wealth of options that makes the choice rather difficult.

Charlotte "Charlie" Fox #1. Part mystery, part thriller about a very tough young woman with a lot of issues who teaches self defense. Takes place in England -- I think it would make a good TV series. 3 stars.

When things are back to normal here (less than two weeks from now) Quentin's A Puzzle for Fools is on my book lineup. I have to admit I wasn't all that crazy about his Puzzle for Players.

And, as usual, I went off in a different direction. A mention of it in An Informal History of the Hugos reminded me of Murder and Magic (that cover, too) by Randall Garrett, which I've long owned but never read. Merging mystery and fantasy it sounded exactly right for my mood.
