The movie was great. Very tense thriller. I think I've read the book, but it was many moons ago.

Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe. I'm only moderately interested in the opioid crisis. I read this because I had really enjoyed his Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. And Keefe once again delivered a story about crimes that go unpunished and the background history which enabled that.

Andy Carpenter #12, OK to read as a stand-alone. Andy's friend, Detective Pete Stanton is unjustly accused of murder and Andy must defend him.. I thought this story was overly complicated and a bit over the top but otherwise very likable and fun to read. 3.5 to 4 stars.

I'm enjoying it so far. Flying through it, actually. I've seen the film a long time ago and liked it so I know what's going on but I'm enjoying it regardless.

We've had a bit of a mini-crisis at home the last few days that's sort of left me a bit mentally flat, but I did manage to finish Puzzle for Players by Patrick Quentin (1938). Have you ever read one of those novels where you think "just please just be over?" That's how I felt about this one. Didn't guess the who so I have to give the author some credit. Also started Death in the House of Rain, a locked-room mystery from Taiwan, and I've once again gone back to Damon Galgut's The Promise.

I'm on the edge of finishing Death in the House of Rain. The impossible crimes angle is pretty awesome, and since I couldn't sleep right away last night, I laid there and try to imagine how they were done. I came up with one idea that made me laugh out loud, but I seriously doubt that I actually came up with the solution. The characters are really strange and the book reads a bit on the YA side at times with some pretty silly dialogue.
