Ex Army officer investigates double murder in 1892 Bombay. Another book that has won lots of awards and is liked by everyone but me. I found it slow going and I had problems with the character's names. I quit halfway through.

Somehow I never read any of his stuff until a couple years ago when I read Where Eagles Dare. I found a few old paperbacks of his at a used bookstore so I'm going to work my way through some of his bigger titles. He writes suspense well, never really giving more details than he has to.

Four stars. My review:

A Rage in Harlem by Chester Himes. Entertaining crime comedy, enjoyed it but did not find it as special as its reputation suggests. Rating - 3/5

It's been years since I've seen the movie, but as I recall, it was quite good.

I think his best book was HMS Ulyssess, a perfect war story

The author is a two-time winner of the Theakston Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award (U.K.) so I thought I would sample his stuff.

It's Booker Prize longlist time and I've finished reading my first book on the list, Klara and the Sun. Not my favorite Ishiguro novel but still pretty good, although it wobbles at times. My second read from that list is A Passage North by Anuk Arudpragasam, which I've just started. I'm on the edge of finishing The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey (not on the longlist) which I'm loving, and I finally made my way back into crime reading with Midsummer Murder by Clifford Witting (1937).
I'll be starting Resurrection Bay over the weekend.

Have not seen the movie, the book reminded me of Guy Ritchie movies set in Harlem instead of London.

I wouldn't have thought of that, but now you mention it, I can see it.

I just finished this book as well. I do enjoy reading all the Chief Kate Burkholter series. It's a nice glimpse into the Amish world.

Enjoyable story, great location. My four star review:

But my real point is that I'm a sucker for all things du Maurier, though I think my favorite was one that took a departure from her regular themes. It was The House on the Strand, which will probably be my next choice.

The House on the Strand was the 1st du Maurier book that I ever read. I've read it once or twice more since the 1st time

I read it in university well, not as a course, just when I was there. It kind of blew me away, very surprising story and I like what you say, both from a scientific and historical fiction perspective). Definitely not like the other du Maurier books I've enjoyed since

More historical fiction than mystery, but a good read. My four star review:

Former Atlanta cop, now Chief of Police in a small town, confronts murder and drug dealing as he heals from the death of his wife. Extremely well-done police procedural. Plot buzzes right along, clues pile up while characters come alive. I liked it a lot, 4 stars.

Next in line is Red Bones also by Ann Cleeves

John Glatt - who's written many true crime books - tells the story of Manhattan socialite Thomas Gilbert Jr., who murdered his father in cold blood.
Well researched. 4 stars

Native American confronts the drug problem on the reservation. This is one of those books that everybody loved but me. Lots of awards. I found it too real -- depressing with nobody in it that I liked. I quit halfway through.
