Araych | 676 comments Winter Counts Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden by David Heska Wanbli Weiden

Native American confronts the drug problem on the reservation. This is one of those books that everybody loved but me. Lots of awards. I found it too real -- depressing with nobody in it that I liked. I quit halfway through.

Araych | 676 comments Murder in Old Bombay Murder in Old Bombay by Nev March by Nev March

Ex Army officer investigates double murder in 1892 Bombay. Another book that has won lots of awards and is liked by everyone but me. I found it slow going and I had problems with the character's names. I quit halfway through.

Somehow I never read any of his stuff until a couple years ago when I read Where Eagles Dare. I found a few old paperbacks of his at a used bookstore so I'm going to work my way through some of his bigger titles. He writes suspense well, never really giving more details than he has to.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA is the personal story of a bright, talented woman who for a while was in the shadowy end of our checkered War on Terror. If you want spy derring-do or a primer on fieldcraft, move along; this ain't it. But if you want to see how the Girl Next Door becomes a for-real Harriet the Spy, you could do a lot worse than this. Four redactions.

It's Booker Prize longlist time and I've finished reading my first book on the list, Klara and the Sun. Not my favorite Ishiguro novel but still pretty good, although it wobbles at times. My second read from that list is A Passage North by Anuk Arudpragasam, which I've just started. I'm on the edge of finishing The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey (not on the longlist) which I'm loving, and I finally made my way back into crime reading with Midsummer Murder by Clifford Witting (1937).

I'll be starting Resurrection Bay over the weekend.

Have not seen the movie, the book reminded me of Guy Ritchie movies set in Harlem instead of London.

Faith Dyson | 3 comments I'm reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - again. It's been decades since my first time around, so I'm really enjoying the verbiage, imagery, trip to another time and place, etc., especially during all of the chaos happening - now.

But my real point is that I'm a sucker for all things du Maurier, though I think my favorite was one that took a departure from her regular themes. It was The House on the Strand, which will probably be my next choice.

I read it in university well, not as a course, just when I was there. It kind of blew me away, very surprising story and I like what you say, both from a scientific and historical fiction perspective). Definitely not like the other du Maurier books I've enjoyed since
