Brady Coyne #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. Brady investigates the murder of the son of one of his rich clients. Short book, only 180 pages, and easy to read like all in the series. Very likeable well done mystery series. I'm a fan even though I figured this one out. 4 stars.

Congratulations! That book seriously intimidates me.

I second that! I loved the musical, but I’m not sure I would tackle the book.

Next is a Superintendent Battle mystery, Easy to Kill (also published as Murder is Easy).

book was pretty good, but had a lot of side trips into French history in it

Gave it 3 stars.
I started reading The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner last night, and it sailed through the air at one point, scaring my dog. I'm on the point of giving it up but I'll stick with it for a little while to see if there's any hope.

It was one of those that I only enjoyed the historical story.

I've just finished it, and yes, I completely agree. I also discovered that Park Row Books is a subsidiary of Harlequin. That explains the modern story. OMG, that part was just awful.

Finished The Last Child by John Hart. Pretty well written thriller. 4/5

Dedicated pacifist and girlfriend get pulled into spy adventure in New York. Another amusing Westlake novel about an average Joe involved in some intricate crime caper with jokes and humor on every page. I'm a big Westlake fan and even though this book was written way back in 1966 (mimeograph machines !) it gets 4 stars. Recommended.

I am currently reading "The Thinnest Air" by: Minka Kent, so far so good.

My first attempt at Alan Furst was Spies of the Balkans. It was great. I've read two or three more since and enjoyed them as well.

Big Time

Jen Spyra is a comedy writer and actress.
Jen Spyra's short story collection is satirical, raunchy, clever and entertaining. With tales that range from prehistoric days to time travel, Spyra's creativity shines.
Fun stories. 4 stars

One last Christie novel in March, Endless Night
I've finished reading Twilight by William Gay; started a novel called Ezra Slef which so far is making me laugh but I have a feeling it will get a bit darker before all is said and done. Two clues that tell me so are 1) the main character's boss is a certain Dr. Faustus and 2) it's published by Tartarus Press.
Starting The Lamplighters, by Elizabeth Stonex, another I'm auditioning for the IRL book group. After my experience with The Lost Apothecary, I'm hoping this one turns out to be much better.

Decent, but a little too slow at times. Here’s a link to my 3.5 star review:

Book has no overall plot but rather it's a collection of 3 odd stories -- a man gets stabbed in the back of his knee, a boy who doesn't exist disappears, etc. Smith has an unusual distinctive style -- maybe you like it, maybe you don't. I thought the book was just OK.

How did you like it? I really enjoyed the two WG novels I've read but I haven't gotten to Twilight yet.

I don't know how it will compare, since I've only read this one and his unfinished Little Sister Death, but I loved it. To me his strength is in how he captures place and people, and in the two books I've read so far, how he looks at a South that once was and won't be again.

When Hen moves to a Boston suburb with her husband, she becomes convinced her new next-door neighbor is a murderer.
Good psychological thriller. 3.5 stars

I read his first novel The Long Home as well as Provinces of Night. Long Home was very good but Provinces was amazing. Gay's prose is so rich and nuanced, and thematically he reminds me a lot of early Cormac McCarthy.

This fun series - about a team of private investigators called the K Team, is a spin-off of David Rosenfelt's humorous 'Andy Carpenter' mystery books. In this second K Team novel, one of the private detectives is accused of murder. The book works fine as a standalone.
Entertaining book. 3.5 stars

Ex-con gets accused of murder and has to figure his way out; takes place in a small town in 1949. Maybe it was just me -- on one page Archer does something smart and on the next page he does something stupid. A generous 3 stars.
