Brady Coyne #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. Brady investigates the murder of the son of one of his rich clients. Short book, only 180 pages, and easy to read like all in the series. Very likeable well done mystery series. I'm a fan even though I figured this one out. 4 stars.

Eva (bookworm_eve) Finished the last installment of the Bill Hodges-trilogy by Stephen King. The first 2 books were amazing, the 3rd was good, but not the big WOW I had with the first 2. But still, a definite trilogy must-read!

End of Watch (Bill Hodges Trilogy, #3) by Stephen King

Gave it 3 stars.

I started reading The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner last night, and it sailed through the air at one point, scaring my dog. I'm on the point of giving it up but I'll stick with it for a little while to see if there's any hope.

I've just finished it, and yes, I completely agree. I also discovered that Park Row Books is a subsidiary of Harlequin. That explains the modern story. OMG, that part was just awful.

Araych | 676 comments The Spy in the Ointment The Spy in the Ointment by Donald E. Westlake by Donald Westlake

Dedicated pacifist and girlfriend get pulled into spy adventure in New York. Another amusing Westlake novel about an average Joe involved in some intricate crime caper with jokes and humor on every page. I'm a big Westlake fan and even though this book was written way back in 1966 (mimeograph machines !) it gets 4 stars. Recommended.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 440 comments I finished The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper - I found it very hard to read, it went into a lot more detail than I expected, like how the victims parent's met, but I felt I had to give it 4* as it completely changed my perceptions of what we have been told about the victims, and I felt very sad at the end of it, and relieved that I'm living in these times.

I've finished reading Twilight by William Gay; started a novel called Ezra Slef which so far is making me laugh but I have a feeling it will get a bit darker before all is said and done. Two clues that tell me so are 1) the main character's boss is a certain Dr. Faustus and 2) it's published by Tartarus Press.

Starting The Lamplighters, by Elizabeth Stonex, another I'm auditioning for the IRL book group. After my experience with The Lost Apothecary, I'm hoping this one turns out to be much better.

Araych | 676 comments The Department of Sensitive Crimes The Department of Sensitive Crimes (Detective Varg, #1) by Alexander McCall Smith by Alexander McCall Smith

Book has no overall plot but rather it's a collection of 3 odd stories -- a man gets stabbed in the back of his knee, a boy who doesn't exist disappears, etc. Smith has an unusual distinctive style -- maybe you like it, maybe you don't. I thought the book was just OK.

I don't know how it will compare, since I've only read this one and his unfinished Little Sister Death, but I loved it. To me his strength is in how he captures place and people, and in the two books I've read so far, how he looks at a South that once was and won't be again.

I read his first novel The Long Home as well as Provinces of Night. Long Home was very good but Provinces was amazing. Gay's prose is so rich and nuanced, and thematically he reminds me a lot of early Cormac McCarthy.

This fun series - about a team of private investigators called the K Team, is a spin-off of David Rosenfelt's humorous 'Andy Carpenter' mystery books. In this second K Team novel, one of the private detectives is accused of murder. The book works fine as a standalone.

Entertaining book. 3.5 stars
