American author, possibly female. Might have one-word title. Plot: A boy disappears (possibly near a body of water) at the same time a UFO is sighted. After some missing time (days, I think) he reappears, unharmed, with no memory of what happened to him. He never remembers what happened to him; the story is about how he deals with the fame the experience brings him. Despite the science fiction plot, the book was marketed as a 'young adult with problem' story.

But that's from '94, so maybe too recent. Sounds a lot like the Disney movie Flight of the Navigator, but there was never a book version of that as far as I know.
