I liked it better than Rebecca but I suspect I am in the minority there.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) | 781 comments I'm rereading Oathbringer, and it is like reading a book first time. The e-book is close to the print book in its chapter headings. And I'm reading it on my Kobo Elipsa, so the maps are presentable. Not that I memorised them or anything. I'm not going to become a Stormlight Archives nut... I'm just halfway there.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) | 943 comments I finished the third book in A.B. Guthrie's Dick Summers series about the American West:

which is not my usual fare, I know. I don't usually do well with reading children's books as an adult but my daughter cleaned out her shelves recently and I decided to read this one before it is given away.

* Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness (my longest book this year)
* The All Souls Real-Time Reading Companion by Deborah Harkness
* 4:50 from Paddington by Agatha Christie
* The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (a reread)

Middlemarch is a book that I tried to read. It is not for me, even though I have not had a serious attempt in reading the book beyond half a chapter. I'll try to read it when I'd have reduced my TBR.

I finished Middlemarch once but I didn't enjoy it. Afraid I don't see why it is such a popular book. I much preferred the Mill on the Floss if you want to try an easier read from the same author.

We are reading it in 6 months, with each section of the book being a month. We started in September and will finish in February. It's with the Everyone Has Read This But Me group in the Read Along section. :) It is a very long book, maybe not quite as long as War and Peace.

message 1245: by Brian E (last edited Nov 10, 2022 04:07AM) (new)

Brian E Reynolds | 337 comments The Word Count of Some Classic novels:

47,094 – The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
61,922 – All Quiet on the Western Front – Erich Remarque
73,404 – The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger
100,388 – To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee
135,420 – A Tale of Two Cities – Charles Dickens
169,481 – The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck
206,052 – Moby Dick – Herman Melville
211,591 – Crime and Punishment – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
316,059 – Middlemarch – George Eliot
349,736 – Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy
364,153 – The Brothers Karamazov – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
365,712 – Lonesome Dove – McMurtry, Larry
418,053 – Gone with the Wind – Margaret Mitchell
587,287 – War and Peace – Leo Tolstoy

So while Middlemarch may not be as long as War and Peace it's still long enough for one to have read A Tale of Four Cities within the same time frame.

This is so interesting, Brian--thank you!

It's funny how so much goes into how long a book feels, and it's such a personal reaction. I could have sworn Moby-Dick or, the Whale was twice as long as War and Peace. :-)
