My Cousin Rachel by [author..."
I got this recently at a wonderful Little Free Library in my town. :) I have only read Rebecca so far by this author.

Thank you, Savita.

I liked it better than Rebecca but I suspect I am in the minority there.

The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K. Dick
Rating: 4 stars

and the Pulitzer and National Book Award winner

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Rating: 4 stars

and I started reading the "authorized" sequel to The Time Machine by H.G. Wells

The Time Ships by Stephen Baxter

Fair Land, Fair Land by A.B. Guthrie Jr.
Rating: 4 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and I started reading:

Matilda by Roald Dahl
which is not my usual fare, I know. I don't usually do well with reading children's books as an adult but my daughter cleaned out her shelves recently and I decided to read this one before it is given away.

How do you like it? I still need to read Spin. I've had it on my shelf forever."
Finished it and it was an absolutely beautiful conclusion to the series. Definitely worth the read.

The best children's novel I have ever read just has to be Treasure Island.

Thank you, Savita.

That's interesting. :) Maybe I will like it better than Rebecca, too.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
Rating: 3 stars

and I started the third book in the Dragonriders of Pern series (first in the Harper Hall trilogy)

Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey

Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay
Rating: 4 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
and I started reading perhaps the most revered war novel ever

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

and I started reading

The Death of Sweet Mister by Daniel Woodrell

Currently reading the rather schlocky

Absolutely RJ. All Quiet on the Western Front is fantastic.

Yes. Easily one of my favorites this year.
I just started what already promises to be another all-time fave

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

* Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness (my longest book this year)
* The All Souls Real-Time Reading Companion by Deborah Harkness
* 4:50 from Paddington by Agatha Christie
* The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (a reread)

I hope you both enjoy it as much as I did. :)

Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey
Rating: 4 stars

and I started reading a collection of stories and material related to the Amber series

The Road to Amber by Roger Zelazny

- The Goblin Emperor
- Crying in H Mart
These two books are for a challenge.

Thanks :) Just not sure when I will be reading it; maybe in 2023? :)

Wow, i always assumed that was like a normal length, not like War and Peace length... you live and learn. Never heard anyone mention it in discussions of long books before.

The Third Man / The Fallen Idol by Graham Greene
Rating: 4 stars

and I started

Mildred Pierce by James M. Cain

Middlemarch is a book that I tried to read. It is not for me, even though I have not had a serious attempt in reading the book beyond half a chapter. I'll try to read it when I'd have reduced my TBR.

I finished Middlemarch once but I didn't enjoy it. Afraid I don't see why it is such a popular book. I much preferred the Mill on the Floss if you want to try an easier read from the same author.

I thought that was one of his better ones. Hatteras is an interestingly terrible person, kind of a Captain Ahab type i guess.

Ha Ha, my goal is to read them all in French (but I have only read in English so far)

We are reading it in 6 months, with each section of the book being a month. We started in September and will finish in February. It's with the Everyone Has Read This But Me group in the Read Along section. :) It is a very long book, maybe not quite as long as War and Peace.

47,094 – The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
61,922 – All Quiet on the Western Front – Erich Remarque
73,404 – The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger
100,388 – To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee
135,420 – A Tale of Two Cities – Charles Dickens
169,481 – The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck
206,052 – Moby Dick – Herman Melville
211,591 – Crime and Punishment – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
316,059 – Middlemarch – George Eliot
349,736 – Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy
364,153 – The Brothers Karamazov – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
365,712 – Lonesome Dove – McMurtry, Larry
418,053 – Gone with the Wind – Margaret Mitchell
587,287 – War and Peace – Leo Tolstoy
So while Middlemarch may not be as long as War and Peace it's still long enough for one to have read A Tale of Four Cities within the same time frame.

This is so interesting, Brian--thank you!
It's funny how so much goes into how long a book feels, and it's such a personal reaction. I could have sworn Moby-Dick or, the Whale was twice as long as War and Peace. :-)

You are not alone in that thought.

Thank you so much!

I was coincidentally planning on soon reading his Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me
which I have now started, and am enjoying with added poignancy
