I read this book maybe 12 years ago, but I don't know how long before that it came out. It was about a boy who was sent to live in a house that he discovered had a lot of magical/supernatural things going on inside it, and the world outside the house. There were these spirits called Inklings, who are described as "you know when you put something down and two seconds later you can't seem to find it? That's because the Inklings moved it." There was also this cat's eye gem that was important, although I can't remember how, and a bunch of cats that lived in the house. There was a plot point where this gang of kids who lived outside the house (they kind of reminded me of the Lost Boys) kidnapped some of the cats, sending a ransom note saying "cats will dye", which it turned out was not a spelling mistake as the cats were just dyed pink.
I cannot for the life of me remember what this book was called, nor have I been able to successfully look it up. I would appreciate anyone who can help!!
