and Sean Bean is so yummyplus there's Elizabeth Hurley, Alice Krige (Borg Queen), Padma Lakshmi, James Purefroy (Rome) and Daragh O'Malley as Harper
SFF- Finish three series.
- Catch up with a series or two whose first books do not have 2021 publishing dates.
Manga
- Finish seven series.
- Catching up with current series is very much a moving target in this category, so no goal there.
I'm a whimsical reader, so being too specific is likely to be counter-productive. Still, I can see myself finishing one or two of the following:
Wells/Murderbot: Exit Strategy and Network Effect
Elliott/Court of Fives: Buried Heart
Lee/Green Bone Saga: Jade Legacy (theoretically coming in Sept)
Adams/Hitchhiker's Guide: Mostly Harmless
Charles/Society of Gentlemen: a short (50 pp.) and two novels
I was going to put Alecto the Ninth to finish the Locked Tomb Trilogy but it looks like it isn't expected until 2022.
Oh yes, that sounds like a challenge I absolutely need! And maybe the cute icons are enough motivation to finally finish some of my started series...There are a few "easy" choices with books coming out this year but I also want to complete or at least continue a few others as well.

I'm on a re-read of the first book for this category:Genre Bender = Lynn Hightower's Elaki series
which is Alien Blues and will go on to read the next three in the series. So far it's a 4 book series.
and here's my fill in the the bonus challenges (subject to change):Bonus challenges (referring to individual sequel books)
You can earn the following tiny little symbols by reading a (sequel) book in a series which
1) has a dragon (or the word dragon) on the cover: you get the dragon 🐉 = Dragonshadow which is #2 in Barbara Hambly's Winterlands series
2) has a weapon (or the name of a weapon) on the cover: you collect the knife 🔪 = Kings of the North which is #2 in Elizabeth Moon's Paladin's Legacy series and has a buch of men shooting arrows on the cover
3) has a person on the cover: you collect the dancer 💃 = City of Stone and Silence which is #2 in Django Wexler's Wells of Sorcery series
4) has a landscape on the cover: you collect the flower 🌺 = Down Among the Sticks and Bones which is #2 in Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series which was free from Tor for the first 5 books recently
5) has stars or planets on the cover: you collect the star ✨ = Eye of the Comet which is #2 from Pamela Sargent's Watchstar series and has a comet on the cover
6) has an fantastical/not real creature or the name of one on the cover: you collect the unicorn 🦄 = The Kraken's Tooth which is #2 in Anthony Ryan's Seven Swords series
7) has a real animal/name of one on the cover: you collect that animal's emoji 🐰🐒🐅🦅🦚🐟 etc. (repeatable) = Knight of the Demon Queen which is book #3 in Barbara Hambly's Winterlands series and has a horse being grasped by a dragon on the cover
8) features a murder investigation: you collect the detective 🕵️♂️ = White Night which is book #9 in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series and the main character is a detective
9) features an alien/vampire/zombie/ghost: you collect the 👽or 🧛♂️ or 🧟♀️ or 👻 (repeatable) = Changes which is book #13 in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series and features Dresden's exlover who is a vampire
10) features a love story/couple/some romantic elements: you collect the hearts 💕 = The Hidden Masters of Marandur which is book #2 in Jack Campbell's Pillars of Reality series which features the trials and tribulations of a couple
11) features space travel: you collect the UFO 🛸 = Statesman which is book #5 in Piers Anthony's Bio of a Space Tyrant series
12) features a very cold, icy environment or a very hot one: you collect ice ❄ or fire 🔥 (repeatable) = The Fortress of Grey Ice which is book #2 in J.V. Jones' Sword of Shadows series. The whole series seems to be set in a cold environment
There's no way I'll finish 12 series, or even continue 12, this year. But it's fun to fill lists like this in...1) has a dragon (or the word dragon) on the cover
2) has a weapon (or the name of a weapon) on the cover
3) has a person on the cover
(actually had a tough time with the weapon. but Alexia's parasol also functions as a weapon!)
4) has a landscape on the cover
5) has stars or planets on the cover
11) features space travel
6) has an fantastical/not real creature or the name of one on the cover
(okay, this is weird. I'm having trouble finding a book for this one among the dozens of series I'm partway through. tbd)
7) has a real animal/name of one on the cover
(sheesh, this one, too. at least I found a book with a horse on it.)
8) features a murder investigation
(This would have to fill itself in. I don't anticipate reading any category mystery novels this year.)
9) features an alien/vampire/zombie/ghost
10) features a love story/couple/some romantic elements
12) features a very cold, icy environment or a very hot one
(I'm making assumptions here, not having read the book)
I’m with you Beth! I’m not sure I’ll make any progress on any of the series already in progress, but the list making is fun!
just started the ACOTAR and darker shade of magic series and I'm already almost done the first ACOTAR book and getting through a darker shade of magic pretty well :)
I like the challenge... but the only reasons I usually haven't finished a series are either that the next books haven't come out yet, or they're constantly on loan at the library (too popular), or I didn't like them. So it wouldn't work as a means to finish ones I haven't gotten around to, but could work as a random/fun thing. I did finish one of a trilogy this month, from a favourite author - started in December (last week of) and finished in January (first week). Does it count?
It's
. As the third book, does it count for the landscape cover, or are the bonuses only for second books? Also, do we share the books and progress here, or create a challenge shelf? (I haven't done one of these before)
I've finished my first sequel:
Book six of the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne
With the nice sword on the cover I've earned the knife: 🔪
Finished my Genre-Bender series (1 re-read and three other books), Elaki by Lynn S. Hightower which includes these books:Alien Blues
Alien Eyes
Alien Rites
and
Alien Heat
and am on to the Debut Author square which is: The Chronicles of Tornor Trilogy: Watchtower, The Dancers of Arun, and The Northern Girl by Elizabeth A. Lynn. It's her first series. She did have a stand alone novel of 192 pages, but the first book in the series was about a year later, so I'm content with calling her a debut author
@CBRetriever: Then you've already earned a detective 🕵️♂️, an alien: 👽, and a dancer 💃, as far as I can see. :-)@Myriel: Congrats on having armed yourself! :-D 🔪
@Tamara: It counts! Congratulations, and you've earned a flower 🌺!
Eva wrote: "@CBRetriever: Then you've already earned a detective 🕵️♂️, an alien: 👽, and a dancer 💃, as far as I can see. :-)@Myriel: Congrats on having armed yourself! :-D 🔪
@Tamara: It counts! Congratula..."
Wow, I didn't even notice that. For some reason I thought the books for the bonuses would be fore books not in the series I intended to finish.
Murderbot counts yes? If yes I claim a 🛸 with Rogue Protocol11) features space travel: you collect the UFO 🛸
Congrats! Indeed, you've earned a 🛸! @CBRetriever: no, the bonuses can also be earned with series entries you read for the bingo board. :-)
Eva wrote: "Congrats! Indeed, you've earned a 🛸! @CBRetriever: no, the bonuses can also be earned with series entries you read for the bingo board. :-)"
then I claim the three you mentioned
As you prefer, but we only get notifications about new posts, not edits, so if you want people to cheer you on/collect a reward it's best to post. You could also do a mixture: edit your original comment and only post when e.g. you've finished a whole row with a link to that old comment.
I'm in favor of adding a new post as I don't think most of us don't go back through the posts to see if there's been a change. On my personal Challenge thread I do edit posts to keep the thread shorter

Yay. Thanks. How do we use these? Or is it just the knowledge that we earnt them?
If using Windows: press and hold the windows key on the keyboard, then press the . key: voilà! There are the emojis! Obviously you can already use them all you like, or you can put the ones you've already earned underneath your posts in this thread like badges. It's just meant as a cute little visible reward to motivate people.
Thanks, Eva. Sounds good. 🌺 😎I've begun two series, but without knowing whether I'll continue them. So I've just done what this challenge is made to fix! Haha. So far,
, and
.Tentative plans/possibilities:
Favourite Author: Stephen Lawhead, Eirlandia (last book: In the Kingdom of All Tomorrows (done)
New-to-You Author: The Book of Three(Chronicles of Prydain)
Debut Author: The Invisible Library (5 out of 7 read so far - 7th is new and still on order at library)
Fantasy: Chronicles of Prydain OR The Harp of Kings - Warrior Bards series (onto second book - third not out yet).
Science Fiction: Skyward. Only 2 out so far, and the next one is popular at the library. I think I should be able to get it before the end of the year...
Genre-Bender: rest of Death Trilogy: Mort / Reaper Man / Soul Music from ‘Discworld’?
The Invisible Library series also fits in this category, in case I read some other 'debut author' series.
Trilogy: Warrior Bards
Quartet:
Longer Series: The Invisible Library
I'm going to need more books, because these obviously don't cover the categories.
These look great! And I'm sure you'll accumulate more ideas as the year progresses and the rest of the categories will fill up with options soon.
finished the Trilogy square with The Chronicles of Tornor Trilogy: Watchtower, The Dancers of Arun, and The Northern Girl by Elizabeth A. Lynn so that's two squares for me (Genre Bender is the other one)
I've finished the next book in the Iron Druid Chronicles:
I'm not sure for which of the bonus challenge I should name it. It features a person on the cover, it has a murder investigation and in the course of the investigation the ghost of the victim is called as witness and of course there are some romantic relationships ...
But I think I'd like to claim the ❄ because a part of the book is in the Himalayas *coooold* 🥶
Not exactly: you can fill in the bingo while also collecting bonus challenges, but it should be one book for each bonus challenge. :-)Congrats, Myriel! ❄
I always admire people who can read winter books in winter and summer books in summer! When I'm freezing I want to read about jungles and beaches, and when it's oppressively hot I want to read about ice and snow. But I seem to be the only person who does it like this. 😄
Adding the 🔪, 🕵️♂️, 🐈, 💃🕺 (there's a man and a woman on the cover) and💕 for my latest sequel, because it has them all! (Cover/story)
Unless we only get one per book 😄... then, I'd choose either the knife, detective, or cat, as they're main elements. That still makes it three...
Congrats! Yes, only one bonus challenge can be earned per book. 🙂 You can count your bingo challenge books (and any other sequels to read) for one bonus challenge each and choose freely which bonus you want to count it for.
Grace Updates! 11) features space travel: you collect the UFO 🛸 - Rogue Protocol - Martha Wells
5) has stars or planets on the cover: you collect the star ✨ - Exit Strategy - Martha Wells
3) has a person on the cover: you collect the dancer 💃 - The Night Masquerade Binti # 3.
1 BOX: NEW TO YOU AUTHOR - Nnedi Okorafor ❤️
Eva wrote: "Congrats! Yes, only one bonus challenge can be earned per book. 🙂 You can count your bingo challenge books (and any other sequels to read) for one bonus challenge each and choose freely which bonus..."I'll take the cat, then 🐈, for this one. Thank you kindly. My latest sequel is
. I already have a landscape bonus, so need to choose between the dagger/sword/knife and a person.... such difficult choices.
Congrats, everyone! You're making much better progress than I am (I've been doing nothing but *start new series* 🙈 so far!
Cast in Fury: this one has a murder investigation, though it's rather nominal. I could also claim the dragon, or a person on the cover. Since dragons are a dime a dozen in my reading, and I'm not much of a series mystery reader, I'll claim the detective for this one. 🕵️♂️
I finally read my first sequel of the year:
When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain
Which effectively crosses of the debut author because it finishes the series and gives me a 🐯 tiger for the bonus challenges.
Congrats to both of you! 👏How was When the Tiger compared to the first book, Llyren? I loved the first apart from the ending, which seemed a bit simplistic (good guys/bad guys) to me.
@Eva:They're totally different - apart from the fact that you have the cleric again and the story in a story format.
I honestly liked the first one better, mostly because I cared more for the characters and the ending of Tiger was a bit abrupt and a bit unsatisfying for me.
And as for starting new series, well, at least you now have more sequels to choose from ;-)
I finally made progress on some series (other than starting new ones).I read: The Relentless Moon to catch up on a sci-fi series.
I also collected 2 bonuses:
2) has a weapon (or the name of a weapon) on the cover: you collect the knife 🔪 Midnight Taxi Tango has a machete.
3) has a person on the cover: you collect the dancer 💃 The Relentless Moon, there's a few people.
@AMG: There can also be anything else in addition to the landscape, no problem. :-)@Meredith: congrats! Me, I'm still reading first-books-in-series. To be fair to myself, I've finished a lot of series in December, so starting some new ones to eventually finish by the end of the year seems okay.
@Llyren: thanks for your opinion on book 2 (Tiger) - I think I'll wait until next year then, frees up some much needed TBR space.
Where Oblivion Lives: finished this earlier this week and never recorded it. I've now read two of the four books in this series.I will claim the dancer for this one 💃 because it has a human figure on the cover:
@Eva: But don't forget that it DOES bring you up to date with/completes a series ;-) And it was an entertaining read, after all.
True, but reading only one book for a whole bingo square seems too easy mode to me right now - it's only February! (By December, I'll probably see this very differently and will be searching for exactly those kinds of easy series to complete!) 😄@Beth: well done, and that looks like an interesting indie series! But is this a sequel?
