Thanks for this rec, Debbie! It’s been on my Kindle for a while...looking forward to reading it one of these days!

ive read edenbrooke, one of my favorites! her prequel to it is good too! Heir to Edenbrooke
Not book related I came across a couple games, on my phone, not sure if its available elsewhere.
One is pride and prejudice solitaire ( havent played it yet)
the other, which I am currently addicted to is the matching game
storyngton hall. (think candy crush game) I see so many similarities between the storyline in the game and jane austen , takes place in late georgian early regency era, some of the characters personalities etc.
Thanks for the plug, Debbie. I too have it on my TBR list. Looking forward to reading it now with your rec.
Having read Wives and Daughters by Mrs. Gaskell last year, I am now watching the BBC production of it and absolutely loving it. I think any fan of Jane Austen would also really enjoy this adaptation.
I’ve rented it on Netflix but am also thinking of buying it.There’s something in Mrs. Gaskell’s writing that keeps me at arm’s length, but in the filmed version I feel the emotion of the story much more. It’s very well acted! And some familiar actors, including Michael Gambon (the second Dumbledore) and Rosamund Pike.
Poldark fans: box-set at $3.99 includes books 1-3:

Over my years on Goodreads, several people have suggested I read Margery Sharp, and I have finally begun. What a revelation! She has that most elusive of gifts, the one typified by Austen, an elegant brevity of witty insight. I’m reading her first book, written in 1930 when she was only twenty-five: Rhododendron Pie. Run, don’t walk!
Woohoo! I got the opportunity to review one of her books and it was a fab experience. You are so right about the author voice. Pitch perfect. I need to read/listen to more.
Thanks for the reminder, Abigail!

Debbie wrote: "In honor of World Book Day, Amazon has ten kindle books available for free. I picked up A Single Swallow by Ling Zhang, which I likely would not have found otherwise. Who knows when I'll get to it, but I'm excited to read a WWII novel from a Chinese-born author's perspective.
I plucked three freebies from that list. (Who knows when I'll get to them, but I got 'em!) There's really something for everyone - even kids.
Thanks, Debbie!
I will definitely check it out. I recently read one that I got from their World Book Day freebies a few years ago and it was fab.

Anyone reading #ChristmasinJuly?
That's weird! Sounds like Amazon thinks you are outside the country. Maybe try logging out and logging back into Amazon to see if that fixes it.

For those of you who enjoy English fiction from between the two world wars, I highly recommend Nightingale Wood by Stella Gibbons (author of Cold Comfort Farm, but I liked this a lot more). She has an Austenesque gift for skewering characters with a phrase, but I would not call this Austenesque at all. For those who like fairytales woven into their fiction, there are echoes of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, done with a light touch. My review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....
The stand-in Christmas date by Rachel John is free the 19-20th of August. I haven't read this one (yet) but John is one of my favourite sweet authors. Her books are excellent to reset one's equilibrium after a particular angsty read :)https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L9GK55M?...
