Yes! The majority of it does take place outside. This would fit IMO.

Agne | 6 comments I'll go with The Hunger Games. I want to re-read it before reading the new book (prequel) that came out this year.

Marie-Eve Mailhot (indieegirll) | 139 comments I second the suggestion for The Girl in Red. Yes, it's a bit scary because it was a coughing disease, but it's also so different than your usual retelling. I really loved it.

I also read Lost Boy: The True Story of Captain Hook by the same author, and i loved it even more. A nice villain origin story and it takes place entirely outdoors.

I would also suggest Love in the Time of Global Warming (would work for hybrid i think too) but they do spend a lot of time in a van. However, i really enjoyed it, it was really different.

I wonder, I have Good Morning, Midnight and Station Eleven on my TBR, would they work for this?

I'd say Station Eleven works better than Good Morning, Midnight. The tent on GMM is a bit misleading, one of them is in space and the other is at an observatory, he does spend a fair bit outside but I seem to recall that during winter there's a lot more inside time.

The Giver of Stars is on the list and I have on my shelf - I'm assuming the traveling portion of the book is largely outdoors? Hard to tell from the synopsis.

Karen | 127 comments One of my favorite reads this last year was Alex Messenger's the twenty ninth day. It's about surviving a grizzly bear attack while on a boundary waters canoe trip. It was included in my Audible membership.

Not really. There are some outdoor scenes. But it's set mostly in a suburb, with some flashbacks when the Yoos lived in a city (Baltimore, I think?) - like any suburb sometimes you're outside and sometimes (mostly) you're inside.

Laura wrote: "would Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind or Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident work for this prompt?"

The first half of Sapiens is about prehistoric humans and their lifestyle, but the second half is about more recent history. So it's about 50/50! I don't know the other book.

Risa Resnick (risaspieces1212) | 3 comments Trying to use the books piled next to my bed! They said, would “This Tender Land” work for this prompt? Thanks!

message 66: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm thinking of The Box in the Woods since I've made this whole series a goal for the year. I'm not 100% sure it's set mostly outdoors, but it is set at a summer camp so I think it will.

message 67: by Darci (new)

Darci Day | 164 comments I'm going to assume The Lost City of the Monkey God will work for this prompt.

message 68: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 I am going to read Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty Diary of a Young Naturalist by Dara McAnulty

The young author is on the autism spectrum and chronicles a year of nature walks. The book won the 2020 Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing and Writing on Global Conservation

Cindi (cindilm) The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
by Kim Michele Richardson
And it's SOOO much better than Giver of Stars (in my opinion)

I think American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins would work too. THey are outside the majority of the time. (and yes, I know, there was tons of controversy, but if you don't look at this book as fact or a memoir, and just of what one family could possibly endure, it's a heart wrenching story of a mother's love for her son, and building friendships and caring for other people.)

message 75: by Kira (new)

Kira (kiraaa) | 31 comments I read Pax and The Hobbit, or There and Back Again this year. I think they count. The Lord of the Rings would count too.

message 76: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1269 comments Fable by Adrienne Young would work. It's not 100% outside but at least over half I'd say.

Serendipity | 146 comments I’ve just finished Leah Weiss’s If The Creek Don’t Rise which I’m thinking of using for this prompt. I didn’t keep track as I read and now I’m wondering if I’m forgetting or downplaying the indoor scenes/overestimating the outdoors stuff.

message 89: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1 comments Would The Snow Child work for this? I just read it and I could also use it for “place I want to visit in 2021” (Alaska 😍), but it does take place outdoors for a good 60% of the book, and the rest in the cabin. Thanks!

message 90: by Ellen (last edited Jan 15, 2021 09:01PM) (new)

Ellen Mason | 7 comments I think that the classic The Call of the Wild by Jack London will work for me for this. Somehow I never had to read this in school and I have a copy sitting around in one of my TBR piles, so I'm going with it.

message 91: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR | 588 comments I wasn't actually ready for this prompt and while I had looked up some books for it, it was one I was gonna conquer later. That was until I finished reading the next book in a series I'm reading and realized (Ugh Duh!) it totally fit this prompt.

I read Hell Is Empty by Craig Johnson (Walt Longmire # 7) and the entire book, or damn near is outside. They start in a car, and after a very brief time in a building, he spends the entire rest of the book (except for the epilogue) scaling a mountain, in a blizzard, hunting down some escaped convict.

if I can't find anything else I think I will use LoTR.

Jamie | 117 comments The Wendigo and The Willows by Algernon Blackwood would be good, short options for this prompt.

Oh, or Beasts of New York by John Evans (which you can find for free at www.beastsofnewyork.com). This one was a five-star read for me - think Watership Down but with squirrels.
