Christy Baker Given what this year has been like with shelter in place, I am fairly certain that almost ANY book would have a place I would like to visit barring war zones and further natural disasters.

Bekky | 21 comments Wow! very pumped about this list -- just read through it. It might be the best one yet.

Karin Thanks! I missed this, busy with other things. I have posted my list, but haven't yet decided if I'll do the Advanced one yet or not.

Kristy Moore (llamalluv) | 81 comments Tanvi wrote: "Not only do I agree with Kristy about the different format thing... I read in almost every format!"

yup! I read primarily in paper (library books) or on my Kindle (most of my purchased books are in Kindle format), and when I feel an eye strain headache come on (usually because I've been on my phone or a computer screen for too long, which as I age is becoming a shorter and shorter time) I switch to audio so I can read with my eyes closed.

I'm probably going to have to bend this one a little. Perhaps a graphic novel or a choose-your-own-adventure.

Love that the advanced prompts will help me reduce my overflowing TBR list by 1.25%. Having finished the PopSugar and several other challenges, I have been reading from my TBR lists. There are so many great books there and this will be a great way to get to a few more of them.

Look under Polls. There isn't much time left to pick January's book.

Oh my gosh! I am so, so happy that someone else feels this way. Seeing everyone else's excitement made me feel so shitty. I keep my TBR shelf for upcoming releases only, so seeing 10 prompts that all had to do with that shelf broke my heart.

I'm so sorry you feel this way. You might be just looking to vent and not problem solve so you can totally ignore this. However, I think sometimes people get to into "book world" and minor details. I think anything can count as a TBR - looking at a book and thinking huh I'd like to read that counts to me. Maybe the longest amount of time is from today that's fine. Maybe you've been thinking about reading something giant but have just never picked it up...great. I don't think it needs to be on a Goodreads shelf or official list of any kind. I hope you find some flexibility in the prompts and still find ways to read and enjoy.

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments As I think I said before I'm using my physical shelf and stacks of library books and owned books lying around waiting to be read. Maybe you have something similar?

message 162: by poppy (new)

poppy (poppyland) | 7 comments I am so excited about these prompts! Not only I loved the advanced ones being from my TBR shelf, I actually tried to select most of the books for the other prompts from my TBR shelf as well so I can de-clutter it as much as possible. Feels exciting that PopSugar is giving me a reason to finally go over them.

With the COVIDness of 2020, I literally read my entire stack of TBR this year. It was just frustrating to see such a list focused on TBR. I'll figure out some way to make it work. (Though I'm still confused by the DNF thing, but oh well. Treating that like a free space on Bingo.)

That's a helpful way to look at it. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Arh, okay. I don't see that happening to me ;)
For the DNF prompt, someone (Christine I think) made a common shelf for books we have DNF'ed and then if you've been thinking of reading one of those, voila a DNF'ed tbr book.

Novels and Neckties - Kira Murasaki | 26 comments The advanced prompts are FANTASTIC! Finally a reason to purposely include my TBR. <3

Maybe it's because basically 100% of my reading is library books but I stop reading a fair few books that I need to return before I finished them. If I don't get them straight back out they do tend to get forgotten. So I'm happy to choose one of those for this. Have you never lost access to a book or something? I do totally understand not wanting to force yourself through something you were actively not enjoying!

Hmmm, I'm not thrilled at some of the prompts, but on the other hand I love the tbr theme for the advanced prompts,

We'll see how it goes, hopefully a new year's challenge will get me out of my epic reading slump *fingers crossed*

message 170: by Errlee (new)

Errlee | 132 comments I too am struggling with the advanced prompts. The whole reason I do a bunch of challenges every year is to make my TBR list for the upcoming year, and then I’m done. So these prompts are completely the wrong thing for me.

Need to do some thinking about how to make them work ... but kind of bummed to have to rejig the whole advanced prompts section of the challenge. Reconfiguring one prompt is one thing but 10 is a lot of work.

I’m sure I’ll figure something out.

message 171: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 125 comments Errlee, maybe there are books you really want to fit in, but don’t seem to fit a prompt. Or another fits better. You can save those to the side and use them for the TBR.

Or for me there is always something unexpected that comes out in the new year that I wasn’t expecting. Or books I’ve been meaning to read, Anna Katerina, but just never had. Those are some others that you can put in that section.

My approach in your case would be to find interesting titles that people are using for the 10 advanced prompts in the 10 discussion threads and weekly check-in threads. Even though the category does not apply exactly, you would still be exposed to new book ideas.

message 173: by Karen (new)

Karen | 127 comments Are there any other anti-listers out there trying to figure out what to do with 10 TBR prompts? I don't really keep a TBR list, and like to use prompts to discover new things I wouldn't typically pick up.

Karen | 127 comments Nevermind, I see that I scrolled the wrong direction in the feed on my phone and the no TBR comments are right above mine

I've been quite surprised at the number of readers who do not have a TBR list!

I think the easiest thing for all of you to do is to just do the 40 main challenge categories and ignore the "advanced" ten that involve TBR lists. And if you need more Challenge in your life (and who doesn't want more Challenge?!), do BookRiot or Around the Year or Modern Mrs Darcy, etc.
