Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3801 comments For the goal where "someone moves houses" do they have to do the actual moving during the book? Or could I read a book (maybe s first in series) where the character has just moved to a new place.

Morgan if you're looking for some fishing books, there's The Old Man and the Sea and Captains Courageous. Both good and quite short.

Cathy Galloway | 878 comments I keep getting distracted by newer and shinier quests. I need to finish up my rabbit and house. I also want a slingshot. I close to leveling up my staff so I should do that too. I really don't have an organized plan, obviously:)

message 4504: by Zuzana (last edited Nov 22, 2015 03:31PM) (new)

Zuzana | 2570 comments When I can't think of any books that fit the plot/character requirements from the top of my head I try the "search my items" option on my Kindle - I almost always come across a book that fits. When I don't I bother first my family then my colleagues at work and as a last option I bother you here begging for suggestions. ;-)

BTW When it takes me a long time to find a right book then usually right after I finish said book and feel quite accomplished I read a couple of (unplanned) books that fit the requirements too. It happens with a disturbing regularity.

message 4505: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Lane Take advantage of the listopia on here too! I find so many books to fit a quest requirement that way. Stuff I probably would never have read otherwise, but half the time they turn out really great! That's my favorite thing about this whole quest- it's making me read outside my usual bubble.

It should be during the book. Or at least they should still be moving (e.g. unpacking boxes)

message 4507: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3801 comments I try to use listopia to find things...but I'm not good at using it. Do I just search a term? For example, how would I find a list of books where someone moves. Or is that not really how it works?

message 4508: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa Lane Well, for that one no. :/ I actually tried to search for coming off age going off to college books and I didn't have any luck.. That one was tricky and I went with a book I'd actually read for a different quest that expired, so it just happened to work out.
But especially for all the ones with 'blank item on the cover' or 'set in blank environment' etc. those things the listopia almost always helps me find something if I don't already have a book in mind.

Zuzana | 2570 comments Mercenaries are such a great idea. Can't wait to hire one to help with some major baddies.

I have a question about Lady Ysmay: She heals 5 hp at the end of every round. Does it mean that she heals 5 hp at the end of the battle, too (the last round where only the hero gets to attack the monster with a killing blow)?

Zuzana | 2570 comments Kelly, would you accept frogs for prey animals? They are hunted by herons, otters and some species of snakes.

I have a couple of questions about mercenaries.

When I hire one, the contract is for 7 days. May I rehire them once the first contract expires?

Also I'd like to know if the mercenary bussiness is part of the single-player? (the heroes don't compete among themselves who gets to hire a specific mercenary and can hire them at their leisure).

Reva (revans) | 2481 comments So Kelly, how's it going to work in the New Year?

? Just another update?

It would be great to attract new players. Not sure what to suggest except two tiers. -- but that might involve too much work on your part.

Will the be any restrictions on books we are allowed to carry forward?

Do I need to start leveling up my weapons to allocated unused books in tote?

ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS?

message 4539: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 05, 2015 10:21AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2570 comments There was a big discussion about whether Kelly forbids or restricts carrying books to the next year on pages 85 & 86 of this thread. I thought that you participated in it, too, Reva. Never mind. Kelly said that OUR BOOKS ARE SAFE! SO NOBODY PANIC, PLEASE!

Kelly wrote: "It was only for new people. All your books are safe. Sorry for the worry."

As for the next year's plans:

Kelly wrote: "I suspect next year the number of new things will decrease and the existing items will begin to have levels added to them (similar to dog training)."

I know I just figured it wouldn't be indefinite.

I was just seeing if we could generate more discussion on attracting new participants or waking up some of the ones who dropped out.

Also suggestions for what people would like to see in the New Year.

Congrats on your attacks. If they are official, (I am assuming that they are), you should post your Dragon and Hydra Battles in the Tavern since you are the first to use a mercenary.

message 4542: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 05, 2015 10:31AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2570 comments No problem. It seems that lately Kelly is more open to suggestions.

My two cents: The longer the games goes on the more complex are the rules. I think that's what intimidates new players the most. A comprehensive RULES thread with a FAQ section would be great. I understand that it would make a tremendous amount of work - there are 90+ pages in this thread and they are peppered with rules questions.

message 4543: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3801 comments Hmm I'll try and think about how to attract new people.
Maybe they could be allowed do the expired quests since those are typically shorter and less complex. Or maybe use a monthly challenge in January to give a small taste of the bigger challenge (not exactly sure how to do that). That way people can try it and see if they like it. (Maybe post a couple of the quests and let them choose).

message 4544: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 05, 2015 01:57PM) (new)

Zuzana | 2570 comments LOL! I have reworked my battleplan allowing for mercenaries.

This is how it looks now: 9 sheets of paper. ;-)

At least now I know what exactly I need to kill all hydra heads, jabberwocky and thesaurus in two days.

LVL 13 magic staff
LVL 5 sword
bauble for magic staff
Rocky the Pet LVL 2
a dog trained to attack (basic attack will be enough)
Lady Ysmay
and loads of potions (view spoiler)

It will probably take me 4-5 months to get all I need but then it will be a wild ride. :D

message 4545: by Reva (last edited Dec 05, 2015 12:20PM) (new)

Reva (revans) | 2481 comments Well I've noodled around with the numbers more than a few times and I figure the Retail cost ( if I bought all my potions in the store) of Plague Bringer would be 189 GOLD + 3 bats wings with the following:

Attack 4 XXX of Plague Bringer without sling with Mercenary

6 MHP (3 x 6 = 18 gold)
8 Shield Potions - (15 x 8 = 120 GOLD)
1 Shield -1
1 Pet Plus potion (12 GOLD)
1 Damage Potion in (12 GOLD)
1 Enhanced Weapon Potion (9 GOLD)
1 Minor Poison Potion +2 (6 GOLD)
Puppy attack +2
Horse +2
Pet Rock +2
Orb of Fire + 3
Cat +4
1 Lvl 17 staff with Bauble
Lady Ysmay heals +5 each round (12 GOLD + 3 bats wings)

THAT will take quite awhile to amass, So hats off to Kelly. ;-)

Lady Ysmay is a very powerful mercenary to have on hand. It would have been 13 (vs 6 MHP

Zuzana | 2570 comments That's a lot of money. Did you use all your tokens for the queens battle, Reva? Tokens are sure a way to save some money. Would be great to have more quests to get them, too. *winks at Kelly*

And I totally agree about Ysmay, she's wonderful, saves loads of heal potions.

BTW Pet Rock is -2 AP, not + 2.

I know about the rock. It's used properly in the battle along with the shield. It's at the top of page 2 if you want to take a peek. So far it's the best of 4 scenarios. Who knows what other goodies Kelly and Tea will come up with by the time I'm ready to do the actual battle.

Yes to the potion tokens. What one monster gave was used entirely for the Queens attack. With the above battle, the net gain is plus 2 tokens , -169 gold and -3 bats. The 75 exp pt will come in handy.

I haven't factored combat2 or the blue gem yet. It will take time to collect those. Might save a token.

message 4548: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 05, 2015 02:16PM) (new)

Good ideas, Rebecca. Or all new players might get a bonus for joining in the new year. I am thinking a pet for free. I'd let them pick either a horse, a trained cat or a bunny. All of these would be a great boost at the beginning of the game.
