You're killing wrong rats. These in Tavern are pets. They keep cats away. :)
*Lowers the sword that was about to kill the rat known as Spots*Which rats am I supposed to be killing?

*picks up trembling Spots and scratches him between ears*
Those huge ones outside gnawing on books. If you're not sure, just wait little longer. They usually come with goblins and/or bats.
I am not strong enough to battle a goblin....or a bat. Not enough ale I say. More ale and I might be able to take that goblin just yet.
Oh forgot about Tiffany. Welcome to the tavern Tiffany! Kelly and Tea do a superb job in keeping us busy and entertained with fun quests.

Yes, Nothing in the Academy quest uses up your books. It's purely a participation quest so you don't have to worry about books overlapping.
Tiffany wrote: "How do I join the quests and stuff?"Welcome Tiffany :) We hope you have fun. Feel free to stop back here and answer questions, there's lots of people who are willing to help.

Aww. I've been trying to keep ahead of the really prolific readers so I'm sure most people won't be able to keep up all the way. (Even I'm behind! Think how bad I feel when I expire a quest I haven't finished. It's like masochism....)
I am pondering doing some quests that get you collectible things. Kind of like in video game RPGs where you can collect trinkets for your house and such. These would come with a picture that you could display as "stuff I own". They wouldn't do anything but would be fun to to collect for the people whizzing through things but keep people a bit more even on xp.
I stop by the tavern for a cup of tea before starting another exciting day of questing.I have a question about Date Night. If I find one of the words in a book and use it for this quest, does that use up the book.
*walks into the tavern looking for some good chatter but finds the tavern empty. Hmm where did everyone go?
Yeah, that's how I feel about the horse. In the end I decided that I need to get one, but it's about 12 books worth. It will take me a whole month of reading and without any direct XP. I can justify getting the horse because it's essentially leveling your sword and staff without having to put as much effort put into building a pyramid or reading incredibly long books.
I plan on getting my staff up to level 10 after which point I'd need to find a series with 11 books, a series with 12, etc. With the kinds of books I like to read, that is really difficult. I can essentially get to level 11 using the Baroque horse, which has the added benefit of also leveling my sword (which I have no plans for at the moment).
Tia, do you like mysteries at all? I just found
and it's really good and really short and the series has 24 books.
I can't decide if I want to focus on just my sword or just my staff or a little of both. I started with my sword, but I think it's going to be hard to get to a higher level because I don't tend to read super long books. I may have to switch up my strategy now. Should have thought of this in the beginning.

Yup, it uses up the book.
Alex, that is SO awesome. Thank you for sharing, I am totally.............adding way too much of it to my TBR.
Oh my goodness, thank you Alex! I didn't realize the Vorkosigan series had so many books! That could be used for my level 11 staff if I get that far.
For the magic staff, I was going to use some Doctor Who books. They weren't originally numbered so Target assigned them a number in alphabetical order (list here). Do I have to use those numberings for book 1, book 2 etc or can I use the numberings from the chronological order found here? The same books are on both the series I linked.
Oh, brilliant, Zee! I hadn't even thought of reading Doctor Who books for the staff. Looks like I'm set for level 11 and level 12 now thanks to you and Alex. =)
Zee wrote: "For the magic staff, I was going to use some Doctor Who books. They weren't originally numbered so Target assigned them a number in alphabetical order (list here). I literally just realized how many quests require killings that can only be done once a week. I'm going to have to waste so many books to get them all killed in time. Ughhhhhhh I need a drink now for sure.
Kelly said the average quest lasts 2 months. That's 8 weeks. Each of these can only be killed once a week. I need 13 rats, 2 goblins, and 4 bats. 8 weeks...19 kills. Even if she allowed an extra couple weeks that's still probably 8-10 books I'll need to spend.
I don't think the rats from the boast have to be fresh. Don't you have some already? I'm more worried about the health points with the goblins and bats.
Cathy, I only have one right now. 1 rat, 1 goblin.Teresa, yeah they can overlap. I forgot that pat! So I take that part back, I need 9 rats :P
But I need 1 goblin bone for the More Bones Quest plus 3 for Lady Rachel's Debut. I'm more concerned with the amount of health I will need to pull them off.
I agree with Teresa, my concern right now is my health points for killing the required monsters. If only we were immortal....
Just killed another bat. That puts me 1 away from the Robin Hood quest. The problem is, do I want to use them on a quest when they are helpful against a dragon (sometime in the far distant future)?
I mean, I personally won't see that dragon for at least a couple years. So I can't imagine hanging onto them for that long when I'd have that much time to get more.
RebeccaS wrote: "I agree with Teresa, my concern right now is my health points for killing the required monsters. If only we were immortal...."I was so glad at the number of health potions available with March's Quests!!
Cait wrote: "I mean, I personally won't see that dragon for at least a couple years. So I can't imagine hanging onto them for that long when I'd have that much time to get more."I agree :)
I don't really know why that would be a thing? Like if they disappear, what would the new people use to level? Or if they are being replaced by other things, why have them be usable for something so incredibly far in the future?
I bet an extinct monster would be replaced by another creature with the same HP to add some variety to the game. People, we can only kill so many rats.
Alex wrote: "I bet an extinct monster would be replaced by another creature with the same HP to add some variety to the game. People, we can only kill so many rats."Yup. That's the plan. Just to introduce some variety in various ways. They'll always be something available for new people to use.

I feel like I am being redundant, but I just want to make sure before I make some moves. For challenges that say "+1 exp for each letter" (such as A Toy For Hadley), do we get to add the exp every time we finish a book, or do we have to wait until we finish the whole quest?

Question about the ladder building quest.I'm up to 4 books but my 4th book ends with the word "me". Can I match that word to the 5th book or not at all since it doesn't have 3 letters? If I used the last letter of the word before me I would have to use "rme" which...isn't a thing lol

I've settled on listening to audiobooks at work to meet the requirements for the Midas quests. That way I can still be reading books when I'm at home to gain XP. All things considered, I should be able to do three Midas quests (30 gold) this month while upping both my hero and my staff two levels. Not too shabby, I don't think. =)

No, it isn't straight text. It is an illustrated children's book. but it has 6 abridged stories in it which I read to my daughter. Just thought it might qualify. But, if not, that's okay too.
It has The Railway Children, The Wizard of Oz, Black Beauty, Secret Garden, Little Women and Heidi.
