Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
A Novel Role-Playing Game

I'd like to revisit the issue of casting spells.
In my mind, I thought that spells should work the same as a minor poison potion-- that once applied, it affects the monster for the remainder of that specific battle regardless of how many rounds it takes to defeat the monster.
Otherwise we're faced with needing an inordinate number of items, for example, Wisps required to defeat Zombies # 3, 4, & 5. We can only accumulate 15 wisps per month at the most optimistic reading schedule. That means that it can take months to prepare for a Zombie battle.

YAY!! You gotta eat it soon (today) though, or it will spoil! :D

Got it! Thanks!

Glad you could use it. :) Sir Ray has full hp and can't fight until tomorrow -- Dr. Cottage's orders!

It depends on the monster to exactly how the spell affects it. And there will be stronger spells and soon.

I can trade you. Here you go.

Awesome! Thanks so much. :D *hands over potion*

Congrats! And yes I can put you in the hall of fame. Along with a heck of a lot of others I need to catch up on *looks guilty*

I was wondering if no one else had taken the GND out, or just hadn't reported it, haha. It'll be cool to see the list, whenever you get to it. :)

Perhaps those successful warriors can post their battles again so you have a link.

That would be great. Otherwise I'll go skulking. Just had to get Bingo out.
However, I did learn awesome things doing Bingo that I want to bring over here. I can post to threads and I can make pictures to post on threads. Which means...... custom quests! or monsters or whatever. But basically I could do instances and random data and all sorts of other fun things. So if you guys have ideas throw them out :)
We wanted to look into a choose your own adventure reading game but I'm totally up for doing an RPG version as a trial run. Thoughts?

There is a neat Choose Your Own Zombie Adventure a friend plays, but I can't remember the group it's in. It does require a lot of input from the mods though, because when a book is finished they have to comment back with the next set of choices/movement in the adventure. Might need some mini-mods or something to assist -- I think she was saying they have a couple in opposite time zones to cover readers with the hours they're awake/available.
I've definitely been curious about it/interested just haven't worked up to adding another group or anything lol.

It's nine days since I've seen anyone. Did the Zombies get everyone?
Looking forward to September update if the Mods haven't been eaten.

That's my excuse! plus a terrifying backlog of books I've read but not yet used for quests etc...

If Tea and Kelly are looking for quest ideas.... Maybe one where you can read books shorter than 100 pages? Even if I have to read a lot it would be sooooo awesome.
I love series that have "in between" short stories that give more fun background stories about the character. I love that digital media has given authors the ability to do that!

I love audio books, I even have a text to speech app that lets me listen to ebooks. It helps me get things done around the house while I read :D

That sounds neat, especially if the audiobook isn't available. What's the App?

It could be called "Death of a Thousand Paper Cuts" or something."
Lol. I like it :)
How bout this! I'm writing quests in the next day or two (obviously I guess) so anyone with requests let me know!
It seems like we need at least one that's a big book sink.
I'll do light spell level 2. I want to get the superhero thing in but I have to make sure it works well once I write it out. Maybe another fun one where it's puzzle like.

I'd like to ask for an opinion on something from everyone!
I want to set up a system where custom monsters get generated for people. I'm thinking something like either a book sacrifice to spawn one or a free one each week or something to that level. Drops would be stuff like spell components, potion tokens, gold, all that good stuff. It would automatically "despawn" or expire after a week or so.
So two questions:
1) Would you want it generated to your level or would you rather select the level of monster?
2) Would you want the monster posted on your personal thread or posted to a general monster spawn thread?

I'd like to ask for an opinion on something from everyone!

I think the easiest would be to use the Random Generator to
1. Choose a monster from a Select List
2. Determine the size of the attack,
3. Determine the health,
And finally:
4. Determine the Reward/Drop exp.

I'd rather it be posted on a common thread where I could just go look up what monster I got (have all of them at the top) and then once a week or biweekly how ever you want to do it, you'd post a list the the players names and be like Sarah got monster #1, Jane gets monster #7, etc etc. especially if they're going to despawn at the end of each cycle and you get a new one. Just keep updating that post switching people's monster and they can go look at which they have currently.

I agree that I think I would like to pick the level of the monsters as well, for the same reasons Alyssa pointed out. I also think that posting in a common thread would be the easiest way so that everything is in once place and doesn't get lost in posts.
Also, would it expired after a week? Or will we get a bit more time to decide? I like the random element a lot!

I agree with this! I am planning a serious 8 monster attack, so I may not be always able to attack my monster and I don't want to create too much extra work (unless it's easy with your system). Super cool idea too

It's not really a big deal to generate more random monsters so if you'd prefer them on a timer we can do that. I suppose the nice part about a manual request is that it gives a better indication of who is using it.
Unfortunately, I can't edit posts that I know about. I can look into it but I haven't found it so far.

Especially if maybe which ones are available each month changes a few times (like if you make a pool of say 30, and there's only 10 available at a time, and every 3 months you randomly change which 10 it is again- something like that)

I'll change the arrow text to read it will be an instant attack like the Plasma weapon. However, I see this as a separate attack from the staff/sword attack so you'd only be able to red gem one of them.
Note the red gem text: "allows you to double your attack power for one turn once a calendar month. (Includes weapon enhancements, does not include pets attack, only includes one strike during the turn so either slingshot or sword or staff may be doubled.)"
I also wouldn't consider the poison as part of your attack power since that's not something that you're actively striking them on.
The red gem and damage potion/weapon potions can stack for the parts they apply to. It may make sense to use the red gem on a later round if you have attack power growing from other sources.
And yes the growing strength potion can increase even if you don't attack that round.
Does that make sense, or is there anything else I should consider?
