message 66: by Kerri (last edited Jan 23, 2015 11:39PM) (new)

Kerri Rules have been posted! Where is everyone? I'ts way too quiet here at the moment. Ok, I'm going to get the ball rolling. I will commit to reading 3 books at this stage, and am happy to go with any of the following genres for the couples section.
Non-fiction, crime, YA, war, chicklit, present to past/time travel, mystery, horror, memoir, historical fiction, tear-jerker, romance.

Looks
I have books I could read for human head, pair of eyes, (if face is also allowed), torso and legs. I thought of Orange Is the New Black for shoes, but I've already read it.

Where is your date section I can do Africa, Sth America, Canada and possibly Island.

I have books for both an occupation I would and wouldn't want my date to have.

Hobbies, I can do any of collecting, shooting, reading or clubbing.

Hope this helps somewhat. If a spreadsheet is created, I'm happy to be slotted in for 3 books that fit with what I've outlined above. I'm in Australia so I have a feeling I'll be sleeping when most of you are awake and vice versa.

message 67: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Am I correct in understanding that we are simply to divide the various tasks between us, with the aim of getting them all done? This will be quite an easy spreadsheet to do if this is the case, and much easier than the last Toppler! :-) Although maybe quite fiddly to divide it up to begin with. I wonder if we even need a spreadsheet. In terms of organising it to begin with, it might be easier to simply copy and paste all the tasks into here, or into a new thread, so it can be the first post, and then put people's names on each task as they say what they can do.

message 68: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments These are the bonus task sets, so maybe it's best to start with those:

What does your date look like? (For these books, the item must be on the cover.)
* 25 bonus points for completing all these *

Read a book with a human head (or a human looking alien). Mostly the head, as little of the body as possible)
Read a book with a pair of eyes
Read a book with a torso, a frontal view
Read a book with a pair of legs
Read a book with a pair of shoes (you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes)

You never know where your Mystery Date might be from, your own neighborhood, across the country, or halfway around the world.
* 25 bonus points for completing all these *

Read a book set in Africa
Read a book set in South America
Read a book set in Canada
Read a book set in an alien world or on some type of spaceship
Read a book set on an island

What are you date’s hobbies?
* 30 bonus points for completing all these *

Collecting comic books – Read a book that’s part of a series
Shooting – Read a book with some serious gunplay, or some type of weapon being used
Reading – Read an author that’s new to you
Clubbing – Read a book from another participant’s tbr
Role Play Games – Read a book with a geek as a character, or where gaming takes place
Crafting – Read a book with a main character does some type of craft for a hobby

message 69: by Kerri (new)

Kerri That's how I read it too Gail, just try to read as many as we can from the list. I've already been gophering and have found lots of short novels, 250-300 pages, I could choose from. I'm just not sure whether to put forward my preference yet or wait to see what others want to do.

message 70: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Yes, I'm also not sure of the best way to go about it. Maybe if we all say how many books we can commit to, and then we focus first on the bonus tasks?

message 71: by Kerri (new)

Kerri Good idea, I will commit to reading 3 to begin with. I have a feeling we haven't got all the information yet as there is another reserved spot right under the points. I reckon we should make a start with filling in the bonus books and then if we need to swap with other team members later we can.

message 72: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Hi everyone,

I'm starting gophering and making a list of potential "contributions".
By now I can say I'm reading I Am Malala in February for sure, since it's my book club pick, and I can perfectly read it in the toppler week. This would fulfill the "Read a book with a human head" task.
If someone else wants to do this task is fine, this book could fulfill other tasks too, like shooting or biography (but this one without bonus points).

message 73: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Other book with shoes in the cover I can think of is The Time Traveler's Wife, but it's too long for a toppler, 518 pages.

message 74: by Gail (last edited Jan 24, 2015 04:09AM) (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I can read Lovely Green Eyes Lovely Green Eyes by Arnošt Lustig for the 'pair of eyes' task, unlesss someone else would like to do this task.

message 75: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I can also read Disgrace for the 'set in Africa' task, although again I can find a book for a different task if someone else wants to do this one. I'm doing a personal challenge to read books from lots of different countries in 2015, so I'm also trying to tie in my choices with that.

message 76: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Gail, I think this is the best way to start. we can do a list of books we could read and the tasks that would be complete with them. Then, if there are overlaps, we just can try to change some.

message 77: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Sandra, yes, I figured if I volunteer for a couple of them and others can do the same, that would get it started, and we can jiggle things round if someone really wants to do a task someone else has volunteered for. I could probably gopher books for most of the tasks, but I think it's easier just to start with a couple, otherwise I'll get overwhelmed with hundreds of potential books, the majority of which I'm not going to read!

message 78: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Found other two potential readings: Snow Hunters, set in South America and The Color of Magic, part of a series. At the same time both are new authors for me. They also do task without bonus like YA, humorous and fantasy. I'm thinking that the surprise extra bonus j'mom talked about could be related with the long list of well known couples.

There are tasks that are easy to fulfill, like a new author or clubbing (we probably have many books in common in our tbr).

At that point I can commit to read 3 books like those, rounding 200-250 pages. Those are just suggestions, the first results of my gophering, but I can change them according with the team needs. I'll stop here, since I think Gail is true and doing endless list won't help.

message 79: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Gail, do you want to keep track of everything?
Then maybe you can set up a thread and set up all the tasks in the first post(s) and everyone can volunteer for books they would like to read.
We can use this thread for chatting etc.
And we can use the other thread I set up for ONLY telling us what all of us ACTUALLY read + the task it was used for.
So 3 threads in total or is that a bit too much? I could delete the reporting thread if you make an other one?

I have so many books on my ereader, that I can probably find something for almost everything. I think I will go for 4 books.

message 80: by Shanna_redwind (new)

Shanna_redwind | 228 comments I can commit to read around 3 books. I may be able to do more, but I'll say 3 for sure. As to which books I'll read, I'll have to wait until the week before to see what is available at the library, so I'll try to fill an area that hasn't been taken care of then.

message 81: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Elsbeth, I don't know. I figured we could first sort out the bonus ones, and then move onto the whole lot. Honestly, I'm better at making a spreadsheet by itself, and making it all colourful and organised, and inputting the data, than I am at organising people, and trying to sort out how we are going to work together to sort out who's reading what. I feel a bit lost and overwhelmed with this sort of thing. I think I would like someone else to do this part.

message 82: by Gail (last edited Jan 24, 2015 06:54AM) (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Do you know what I think would be easiest? I don't know if this is possible, but if there was a way of making a post that everyone could edit, then that post could be a list of all the tasks, and everyone could edit it to put their name by certain tasks and the books they plan to read. Or the alternative is for everyone to have their own post, which they edit to add the books they've decided on. Then all the information is together. I think that would be good in a new thread. But just talking about it and sorting things out might be better in this thread.

message 83: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 24, 2015 07:04AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Sorry to jump in. Unfortunately you can only edit your own posts in Goodreads.
Even us Mods can't. Just wanted to let you know :)

message 84: by Marie Claude (new)

Marie Claude (mariecg2001) | 1030 comments I usually can read 4 books in a toppler week.

Here are my gophering results: I can read the following

What does your date look like?

- Read a book with a pair of eyes Bad Moon On The Rise

You never know where your Mystery Date might be from

- Read a book set in Canada Le poison dans l'eau or another book in this series, 207 pages, set in Quebec

- Read a book set on an island : Je voudrais qu'on m'efface, 179 pages, set in Montreal which is an island

What does your Mystery Date do for a living?

- Read a book where a main character has a job that you don’t want your date to have Et je te demanderai la mer, 184 pages, the main character owns a motel

What are you date’s hobbies?

- Collecting comic books – Read a book that’s part of a series I have a lot of those, so may do that one anytime

- Role Play Games – Read a book with a geek as a character, or where gaming takes place Ready Player One

Since the couples seem to give only the 10 points of the book, I would read the listed book in priority...

message 85: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Ah, okay, thanks, Rusalka.

Maybe we could make a thread where the first post is a list of the tasks, and then everyone has one post that they edit to add their planned tasks and books. What do people think about that? Rather than long conversations that last several pages and you have to search through to find people's books - it would be quicker. The long conversations could be here, and then people could go to the other thread and edit their one post to add their tasks and books.

I can make such a thread if you like and keep track of things, but I don't want to be the leader of the conversation here where people all chat and think out loud and sort out who's doing what and whether their books count and all that. I just want to be a participant in this conversation, and then I just want to see the information when it's decided and in neat posts! :-)

message 86: by Paakhi (new)

Paakhi Srivastava (pankh) | 199 comments Hey guys, I can read 3 books or 4 at max for the toppler. I am gophering at this moment, but I can read Bell jar for a pair of shoes.

Do we have to read all the books of a section to earn bonus points or just 1 out of the 4 options should be enough?

message 87: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Hi Paakhi - we get 10 points for each book read, but to get bonus points, we have to read all the books in certain sections:

10 points -> Each book read

Bonus:
25 points -> Complete all "What does your date look like" tasks
25 points -> Complete all tasks for "Where your date is from"
30 points -> Complete all tasks for "What are your date's hobbies?"

But we can spread it out - one person doesn't have to read all the tasks. You could read the Bell Jar for shoes, and Sandra could read I am Malala for the face, and someone else could read for the torso, etc.

message 88: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments So...

Read a book with a human head - Sandra: I am Malala
Read a book with a pair of eyes - Gail: Lovely Green Eyes/Marie Claude: Bad Moon on the Rise
Read a book with a torso, a frontal view -
Read a book with a pair of legs -
Read a book with a pair of shoes - Paakhi, The Bell Jar

(If I do another thread, then I will just put people on the list like this when they volunteer, and they can request to change or be removed if they like.)

We need volunteers for legs and torso, and then this section is done.

message 89: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Gail wrote: "Ah, okay, thanks, Rusalka.

Yes, this is what I had in mind as well.
And if everyone has 1 post in that thread, everyone can keep track of their own progress etc. in that track. Which keeps it easier to find for Gail to update the first post.

message 90: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Okay, everyone - I have made a new thread here for people to post which tasks they plan to do and which books they plan to read (this can be changed at any time - it's just for me to start adding people's names to the tasks, so we can have a clear idea of which tasks are covered and which need to be covered.

In the new thread, please can everyone make one post, and no more than one. You can just write 'reserved' in it to begin with, if you haven't decided on any tasks and books yet, and then you can edit your post when you have an idea of which tasks and books you want to do.

Please don't chat in the new thread, because it's purely a place for everyone to summarise their plans. Do all the chatting and figuring things out here in this thread. Let me know here if you have any questions or suggestions.

Hope that makes sense. :-)

message 91: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Great, Gail, thanks!

Shall I delete my 'reporting' thread, so we can use that one? Or do we keep it, so everyone can post there when they have finished a book?

message 92: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I'd say keep it for now, and then we can figure out nearer the time whether it will be helpful to use it.

message 93: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I think the best way to strategise to begin with is to figure out books to read from the bonus sections - when those are all covered, then we can start looking at the other sections.

We have 12 people in the group. The bonus sections have a total of 16 tasks. So if each of the 12 people in the group volunteers for two tasks from the bonus lists (or one, if they only plan to read one book) then we should get sorted pretty quickly.

message 94: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Gail wrote: "I'd say keep it for now, and then we can figure out nearer the time whether it will be helpful to use it."

We seem to think along similar lines, Gail!;)

I'm beginning to get the Toppleritus...lol

message 95: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jan 24, 2015 10:37AM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments I can read a book with a torso. I have two possibilities: Unravelling or The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher.
I think I have found a book on my tbr that will work for legs.
Imagined London: A Tour of the World's Greatest Fictional City.

message 96: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I was looking at Play It as It Lays for torso/body bonus task - you can see the woman's mouth so not positive it would qualify but the torso is the emphasis.

Also looking at some books for mystery date's place of origin bonus task.
Book set in Canada - Still Life.
Book set on an island - Birds, Beasts, and Relatives.

message 97: by Gail (last edited Jan 24, 2015 11:06AM) (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Well, that's the body parts potentially all covered.

I think we've got:

one head (Sandra)
two sets of eyes (me and Marie Claude)
one torso (Tejas Janet)
one set of legs (Connie)
two sets of shoes (Paakhi and Elsbeth).

Are we wanting to have two people doing some of these, or is it best to have one of each to begin with, until we've covered all the bonus points?

Can people sort out here who's doing what, and then go post in the other thread when they are clearer? Or do you just want me to put all your suggestions against your name? The only trouble with that is if a person can only read, say, three books, but has about six suggestions to choose from, and I put them all in, then it looks like more tasks are covered than really are.

message 98: by Gail (last edited Jan 24, 2015 11:04AM) (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Now let's look at countries...

Read a book set in Africa (me)
Read a book set in South America (Sandra)
Read a book set in Canada (Tejas Janet and Marie Claude)
Read a book set in an alien world or on some type of spaceship
Read a book set on an island (Tejas Janet and Elsbeth and Marie Claude)

So we need someone to read a book set in South America and someone to read a book set in an alien world.

message 99: by Ava Catherine (last edited Jan 24, 2015 10:40AM) (new)

Ava Catherine | 4258 comments I can just read the legs book at the beginning of the toppler, and if we find out that we are going for a second set, you can call on me to read the torso book later. I'll just have it in reserve. How is that?

message 100: by Gail (last edited Jan 24, 2015 10:57AM) (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments And hobbies - we only have one possible one for that. We need more people to volunteer for these. I imagine most of us can do 'Read an author that's new to you' or 'read a book that's part of a series', but some of the others might be harder to gopher.

Collecting comic books – Read a book that’s part of a series (Paakhi)
Shooting – Read a book with some serious gunplay, or some type of weapon being used (Connie)
Reading – Read an author that’s new to you
Clubbing – Read a book from another participant’s tbr
Role Play Games – Read a book with a geek as a character, or where gaming takes place (Marie Claude)
Crafting – Read a book with a main character does some type of craft for a hobby
