Kirila | 660 comments Theresa, thank you for taking on the spreadsheet task!

Tomorrow I will look at the books I can read during the toppler and see which tasks they match. I spent the day snowboarding and then watching a movie with friends (Theory of Everything - it's very good, btw!) and now I cannot keep my eyes open...

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I can probably find a book to fit almost any task.

Listopia has some very helpful lists - there's even one for legs turned in with red shoes :)

One of my favorite sites for finding books in certain settings is:

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments What a day it was in Texas! I left the house at 7:10am for a rare Saturday at work, only to run into a large patch of black ice two miles down the road. It was scary as my car started rotating and sliding, but fortunately the closest car was far enough away from me that we did not slam into each other. I had that happen last year and did not want a repeat! It was 31 degrees out, but fortunately warmed quickly as I continued very slowly on my way.

Anyway, I'm giving some thought as to how to organize our spreadsheet, but I'll certainly have that done well before the Toppler begins. Here are some thoughts I had on books for the bonus tasks:

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami is one I could read for A Pair of Eyes
A Suitable Boy (A Suitable Boy, #1) by Vikram Seth A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth would be good for A Pair of Shoes New to Me Author, and I do have both the Kindle version and a paperback copy. Sadly, I must work and won't be able to take the entire week off to read 1,474 page book.
Katherine by Anya Seton Katherine by Anya Seton is on my TBR list, and I found several references to embroidery for Crafting.
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #1) by Alexander McCall Smith The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith is set in Africa.
Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro is one of her excellent books set in Canada
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer Cinder by Marissa Meyer J'mom ruled that one shoe is okay for a Pair of Shoes.

I'm also reading several series that could fit in, and I'll look for more selections later.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Oh, silly me...I must be tired! I just realized that I posted A Suitable Boy for A Pair of Shoes, but the picture is of a boy WITHOUT shoes. Still, it would be good for an author new to me.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I wonder how many people will try for bare feet and then realize that it's shoes they need :)

Ditto! I did a 180 on the expressway once. It was very frightening. And, like you, Theresa there were no cars near me when it happened.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Have a look at Team E's message 101 to see how Almeta is keeping track of who said they'd read what. I'd be willing to try to do something like that, then Theresa can take over with her spreadsheet once the toppler starts.

J-mom could delete her message after I make a copy of it here, so I can go in and update the list.

message 59: by Kirila (last edited Jan 25, 2015 06:42AM) (new)

Kirila | 660 comments Here are the categories for which I could find books so far:

Read a book with a pair of eyes - Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami or The Edge of Reason (Bridget Jones, #2) by Helen Fielding
Read a book with a torso, a frontal view - The Virgin's Lover (The Tudor Court, #5) by Philippa Gregory
Read a book set in Africa - The Fifth Woman (Wallander, #6) by Henning Mankell or The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #1) by Alexander McCall Smith
Read a book set in an alien world or on some type of spaceship - So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (Hitchhiker's Guide, #4) by Douglas Adams
Read a book that’s part of a series - lots of choice from the series challenge
Read an author that’s new to you - One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich
Read a book from another participant’s tbr - suggest toppler (meaning short) books from your TBR. I am always up for something new.

I can probably read one or two books depending on their length.

Kirila | 660 comments Btw, once we have organized ourselves for the bonus points, we can try to read as many different categories as possible. I have a feeling that might have something to do with the secret bonus points...

message 61: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I can do Collecting Comic - books part of a series and Crafting – a main character does some type of craft for a hobby. I'm not sure about the others yet.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Testing Google Sharing

I've worked with spreadsheets for longer than some of you have lived, but this is my first time trying to share using Google Sharing. Can some of you test the link above? It should take you to the current version of the spreadsheet I'm building.

You won't be able to edit (so my formulas don't get changed by accident), but you should be able to see what our reading plans are as I get it updated. Each book will be added with a hyperlink that will take you to its Goodreads page when you click on it.

Once we start reading, I'll mark a "1" by each book finished, and the points should calculate automatically.

It looks wonderful!!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Thanks for testing, J'mom. I'm adding some of the books with links now.

If everyone will include the links for books they plan to read, it will make it much easier for me to do the hyperlinks in the spreadsheet. I understand you can't do this with your iPhone, though.

message 69: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I'll make this an official announcement. The surprise bonus points have nothing to do with how many different tasks are completed. That could give an unfair advantage to teams that have more high volume readers. I assume you'll want to be sure the tasks that earn bonus points are completed, but other than that, let everyone read what they want.

message 70: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Hi Theresa! Great spreadsheet.

I can only commit to 2 books this time. Can you remove Hyperion from the alien world task? It's nearly 500 pages and I don't think I can complete it in addition to the other 2 books I've committed to.

Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

message 71: by Theresa~OctoberLace (last edited Jan 25, 2015 10:35PM) (new)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments No problem, Debra. I realize people are just throwing out possibilities now, and I was adding them more to be sure the links would carry over when I put my Excel workbook into Google Sheets. I'll take Hyperion out.

I haven't decided the book yet but I can also take up the task - Romeo and Juliet – Read a YA book.

message 73: by Freya (new)

Freya | 9 comments Throwing some options out there. I'm assuming that we need to read a different book for each task, and not cover off various tasks with one book, but on the basis of flexibility I've included the same book under various tasks. Probably only going to manage three books max. from the below:

Human head - various options for this one
Pair of legs - also a couple of options
Set on an island - Catch-22
Part of a series - The Colour of Magic
Read a non-fiction - The Power of Your Subconscious Mind: One of the Most Powerful Self-Help Guides Ever Written! / The King's Speech: How One Man Saved the British Monarchy
Book that takes place during a war - Catch-22
Book that features a royal character - The King's Speech: How One Man Saved the British Monarchy
Biography, autobiography or memoir - The King's Speech: How One Man Saved the British Monarchy
A classic - Catch-22

human head- Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4) by Dan Brown

message 80: by jaxnsmom (last edited Jan 26, 2015 04:01PM) (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments *EDITED*
Looking at the spreadsheet, I can fill in these spots for the bonus tasks.

*Shoes
*Africa - I have a lot of Africa books, and Melissa said she'd use hers for Career.
*South America
*Canada
*Alien world/Space

Once we have all the bonus tasks filled we can read whatever we want. And it won't matter if tasks are read by more than one person.

message 81: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 298 comments You can put mine down for career if that is better. I have no preference!

J'mom, I generally manage 8-9, but things are busy right now. I'll commit to 5 and see how it goes.

Melissa, which career option would you choose for Lion in the Valley?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Spreadsheet update 01/26/2015

I'm seeing a lot of suggested books, and I don't want to spend too much time updating the spreadsheet until the team members lock in on books they really want to read. For now, I'm trying to pick up the books for the bonus points as those are mentioned.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments jaxnsmom wrote: "Theresa - Amelia and Emerson are archaeologists - oh, that's for Lion in the Valley."

Yes, but there are 2 career categories -
Read a book where a main characters has a job that you’d like your date to have
Read a book where a main character has a job that you don’t want your date to have

So...is Melissa into Archeologists, or a guy who loves digs a turnoff to her?
