Clashton | 4 comments I am a big fan of the Sean Duffy series, but the plot for this one just seemed so far-fetched that I have avoided it so far. However, I will be following this discussion with interest to see if people think it is worth picking up.

Tayo Reads (tayoreads) | 26 comments Hello I look forward to this read I voted for our other read, however it is a wait list so, I got this available read. The Chain by Adrian McKinty
Interesting comment Clashton. I I must say I never heard of the series. I must live under a rock. How is the series? I enjoy learning about and reading new detective series. Thank for your feed back it stuck my interest of this author.

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 2698 comments I was intrigued by the synopsis. I like thrillers with a touch of horror. I hope I like it.

CBRetriever | 2556 comments I really liked the Sean Duffy series. And I liked them much better than this book

message 6: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 88 comments I read this book a year ago and found it entertaining. It works better in the first half than towards the end. The Chain is my first exposure to Adrian Mckinty and I did have enough fun with it that I may try the series you all are talking about.

message 7: by Tayo (new)

Tayo Reads (tayoreads) | 26 comments this is my introduction to Adrian McKinty he's awfully I can get past this one to move on to the series.

message 8: by Tom (new)

Tom Mathews | 995 comments Your child has been kidnapped.
You must pay a ransom.
But that's not all. You must also select another family and kidnap one of theirs. Your child will not be released until that family has also paid the ransom and kidnapped another child.

“Two things you must remember. Number one: you are not the first and you will certainly not be the last. Number two: remember, it’s not about the money—it’s about The Chain. The most important thing is that The Chain itself continues.

I've been a fan of Adrian McKinty's Sean Duffy series for years but this high-tension thriller blew those out of the water. It does not stop. It does not slow down. It doesn't even give readers a chance to catch their breath. It is that good. I highly recommend it.

message 9: by Ali (new)

Ali Khalifa I loved it

message 10: by Tabitha (new)

Tabitha Carden I really enjoyed the 2nd half of the book. The first was good but the 2nd was fantastic for me!

message 11: by Matthew (new)

Matthew | 88 comments The second half didn't have the same realistic, gritty feel that I was thoroughly enjoying. The climax IS exciting, don't get me wrong, just not quite as down to earth as the rest of the book.

message 12: by Mike (new)

Mike (tigermike) I have read all of Adrian McKinty's books and claim him as an aussie as he lived here on his way to the US. This book is for the American market as a phycological thriller. Whilst I found the premise brilliant I only rated it 4 stars. His Irish police procedural is far gritter and character driven (perhaps my Irish ancestry bias) and rate 5 stars!!

message 13: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 2698 comments my first from the author. im all game to check it out. im starting today.

message 14: by Sondra (new)

Sondra Makkonen | 2 comments This is my first exposure to Adrian McKinty's books. I have seen even on the page to The Chain some are saying this is not some of his best work.
I love these type of books and this had me on the edge of my seat for the first half of the book. The second half for me just didn't have the "gritty feel" as Matthew- message 11 put it.
I am however very excited to try some of his other books, especially if this is not considered one of his better works.

message 15: by D.B. (new)

D.B. Borton | 6 comments While I think the concept for THE CHAIN is brilliant, this book is a bit too thrilling for me. I thoroughly enjoy McKinty's Sean Duffy and Michael Forsythe series -- lyrical prose, compelling characters, wonderful dialogue, erudition, and Irish history. Even better in audiobook. Still, especially as an author myself, I certainly don't begrudge McKinty the change of pace.

message 16: by Susan (new)

Susan Parry | 7 comments I read this a while ago. A really good storyline- taken from real-life. It kept up my interest and I enjoyed it! I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a cleverly plotted thriller.

message 17: by Peter (last edited Sep 03, 2020 04:38AM) (new)

Peter (peterdonnelly) | 334 comments It was a very interesting structure in the novel. The first half took off as a tremendous pace and was very clever in its concept. The initial plot reached a climax about halfway through where many other thrillers would have stopped, but Adrian considered what would happen if a victim sought revenge or retribution? In that aspect, I thought this was fascinating.

I have read several of his Detective Sean Duffy series - set in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, the crimes are set against the backdrop of civil unrest at the height of The Troubles so they have a really intriguing atmosphere. That, coupled with the fact that Sean Duffy is a rare Catholic in a largely-Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary, makes for some interesting confrontations!
Read and enjoy!!

message 24: by Holly (new)

Holly Hinkel I really enjoyed this novel. My first exposure to this author but I got the book because of the Stephen king blurb on the front cover. The first half was super interesting concepts but the last half of the book was maybe a bit too predictable. I still really loved it though.

xime ִֶָ࣪☾. (ximenagm) okay so i just finished this book. the first part was great, but the second part not so much. the ending was too perfect and i didn't believe it.

also i was left with some unanswered questions:
-what happened to erik's daughter after his death? he pretty much said to rachel that he was the only family she had.
-did rachel beat cancer in the end?
-was pete really recovering from his addiction or was he lying again?
-everything about ginger's motivations lmao. was there a real purpose for the chain in her mind or not? also if she was suspicious about rachel from the beginning, why did she accept her as a victim?

i don't know. maybe i missed the answers or maybe i'm jist reading to much into it.

message 26: by Poppy (new)

Poppy Gee I really liked it... I was intrigued by the original premise. And as a mum, I related to how the characters would do anything to save their child. The ending was a little bit too coincidental, in my view. However, I really enjoyed the read. It was clever.

message 27: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (mediadiva) | 1 comments It stretched my suspension of disbelief a bit far, but he’s an intelligent writer and it was an enjoyable thriller. I haven’t read his other work, but remember really liking his contributions on NPR’s Selected Shorts. For me it had a couple of potential strikes against it from the outset as I don’t have kids, and I generally steer clear of thrillers set for an American audience, but both aspects were tolerable. It was fast-paced, the intelligent heroine mainly proved to be, the psychopath was despicable, and it wasn’t too predictable. I’m keen to check out his grittier Irish series now, thanks for the suggestion!

message 28: by Farren (new)

Farren (fdinunzio18) | 2 comments I loved the fast pace of this. I loved the premise of it too. For me, it was easy to not to think about how insanely unrealistic this was because of the fast pace. I do agree the ending fell a bit short compared to the rest of the novel. But I was still impressed overall with it.

message 29: by CMYKari (new)

CMYKari | 5 comments I've just started this, and it seems really fast-paced to me. It's been difficult to connect with the characters with how quickly things progress in the beginning. I'm about a quarter of the way through. Never a dull moment, that's for sure!

message 30: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (xoxoshannon1979) | 263 comments I was so glad Libby appp had this i been wanting to read this book for the longest. I really loved it. It also make you think could you kidnap a child if its to save your own child who is kidnap. Very good book will have to read more from him
