Actually it's neither (probably a pity fr..."Hi Phill, I'm a new author too, from just down the M62 in Hull. Just put yours on my to read list. My first novel is Antigravity Drive, The Diary of an Invention, a Sci-Fi novel written as a diary. I'm relatively new to Goodreads but have dived in head first, quite enjoying it.
Hi Barry. Good to hear from you. I'm new to all this too, having come to the world of novel writing and self promotion late in life. Paradise Girl is told as a diary too, so between us we're making the form fashionable again! I like sci-fi so I'll download yours from Amazon. It would be good to compare notes on our experiences of publishing sometime.
Self publishing is harder than the expectations I had, using Create Space is brilliant, KDP to get it ebook is brilliant, then the brick wall of getting it known, I find usin social media has some but few rewards unless you pay, Face Book and Linked in, Amazon even here on Good Reads, it is perseverance that reaps any reward, unless you pay. So the moral is still, find an agent get it published properley if you need lots of sales, otherwise be content with a few hundred max. Well, thats my thoughts at the moment.
My experience echoes yours, Barry. However, I do have a thing about agents! What other profession would refer to other people's hard work as 'the slush pile'? I used Matador for Paradise Girl - not cheap but very professional. Unless I sell a reasonable number it's hard to justify the expense, but I didn't do it to make money (good job!).I've downloaded your book form Amazon and look forward to reading it.
I agree, I just enjoyed writing it, never really thought about making money or selling lots. Now I find I care more than I thought I would about what readers think of it, especially Sci-Fi nuts like me. I still do not expect to sell millions or anything like that, but would like people to enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.Adding to what I said earlier, the editing and proof reading phase are also painstaking processes, not sure if the published version still contains one or two errors, groan!

Editing and proofreading are vital. You can't do it all by yourself. You need another pair of eyes - or more - before you publish. You have to remember you're up against the big boys.
Kath wrote: "Editing and proofreading are vital. You can't do it all by yourself. You need another pair of eyes - or more - before you publish. Barry wrote: "Self publishing is harder than the expectations I had, using Create Space is brilliant, KDP to get it ebook is brilliant, then the brick wall of getting it known, I find usin social media has some ..."yes, the 'wall' to climb is being noticed.
I'd be wary about paid advertising, we've had a lot of discussions about it in various places on this group. To a limited extent it depends on genre, if you're writing thrillers or perhaps romance, it might just pay to pay for some of the book promotion tools, but if you're SF or Fantasy the experience we've shared seems to indicate it almost certainly doesn't.
Anyway welcome aboard :-)

I am very cautious about the advertising, all they advertise is what the cost is and what they may do, not how I can calculate my return on investment.

You're dead right, Barry. It doesn't matter if they get 30,000 clicks a day on their FB page or have 100K Twitter followers. What's important is how often these turn into click-throughs to your book, and how many of those result in sales. They don't collect that sort of information and so they don't tell you. You'd be better off using the £200+ many of them charge to buy a few nice bottles of wine and some vinyls!

Also have a a 1960's P6 Rover (V8 3.5l) to maintain and run.

Hello all! Here's the answers to the questions you put for us newbies:WHO ARE YOU?: I'm Corinna! I live in Brighton (currently sunny) and have two kids, two step kids, two cats, one dog and a tarantula.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO READ?: I'm eclectic and enjoy most genres. Most recently I have particularly enjoyed Nutshell by Ian McEwan; Under the Skin by Michael Faber and am currently reading The Little Friend by the luminous Donna Tartt.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO WRITE?: I write novels and currently have two published with a local indie press and have number three on the way. I try to write well-paced, narrative driven books with a thread of intrigue or mystery in them.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?: Oops, already done that one!
WHAT DO YOU DRINK?: Wine! A lot of the time!
WHAT DO YOU EAT?: Hot, fragrant curries are a particular favourite.
WHAT DO YOU WEAR?: Shabby chic!
WHAT DO YOU GROW? Things that are apparently supposed to be flowers but end up as varyingly ragged slug-eaten greenery.
Nice to meet you all!
Hi everyone,I'm Daccari (or Dax to friends.)
I've always loved reading and have a particular love for the Fantasy
and Thriller genres. I spend my time working on various novelisations. :)
Hi!I'm not really new, but I've been away so long it feels like it.
*Glances round*
Have you had the decorators in?
Hello all. I was on this forum a while back, my original introductory post is probably still lurking somewhere. Preferred reading is crime/mystery, historical crime/mystery, but I'll try most things. Current must-buys are Jodi Taylor and Ben Aaronovitch.
I write historical crime/mystery, or crime/mystery with a historical element.
I live in Kent, drink wine and eat chocolate!

HiI'm really nervous about this so bear with me.
This is my first attempt to actually do this properly, though I've been a member for some time. But this is my first real attempt to get to grips with Goodreads!
I'm a writer, I write for Huffpo as well as writing books and they're available on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited as well as paperback. I'm writing The Lilly Prospero Series which is YA Urban Fantasy and it's in the Siren Stories Universe.
Lilly Prospero And The Magic Rabbit
I'm kind of not sure how to do this properly but I want to learn. I want to talk to people... actually I just want to skulk behind a computer and just write and never talk to people... but you know what I mean.
So hello. If I'm doing anything wrong please let me know. I promise it's not deliberate. I'm just a bit rubbish when I get started on stuff!
JJ x

Hello, my name is Bilal Ham and I'm new to this group. I'm 20 years old and I live in Wilson, NC. I am a new author of the YA fiction novel Gone World. I'm an avid reader of any genre (besides Romance novels). I enjoy music immensely and prefer classical, jazz, hip hop, dance, and R&B genres, but is always open to new kinds of tunes. I'm also an avid movie watcher. Some of his favorite movies are the Dark Knight and The Shaw Shank Redemption. I enjoyed the Percy Jackson series as well as other books such as, the Walking Dead Comics, 1984, Animal Farm, and the Hunger Game Series. In my down time to stimulate creativity, I meditate, play video games such as Smash Bros and Minecraft, take long walks, and find ways to laugh.
Hello all,I joined Goodreads a short while ago and i'm still trying to get to grips with it. Slowly building my friend base as well, so any and all friend requests are welcome :)
Although i'm from the UK, i'm currently living in Japan. Hope I haven't broken any rules by joining! I'm an avid science fiction reader but I'm also open to other genres, a good book is a good book at the end of the day.
I also love to write in (all of) my free time. I put out my first collection of short stories this week called The Dial.
Anyone else a sci-fi writer? I'd love to hear your thoughts on trying to break into the genre. Anyway, just wanted to say hi!
Hello everyone :)I'm fairly new to goodreads, but certainly enjoying this site so far, and looking forward to making some new friends.
I live in Scotland and mostly borrow books from the library. Plus of course, I have my kindle.
I read 2 or 3 books a week and I'm also hoping to publish my first novel later this year.
All the best
Kady
Hi everyone!I've never joined a group on here before so I'm a bit unsure of what I have to do but I thought it would be a good idea to chat with other people who read as my friends don't read as much as I do. So I thought I would give this a try!
Welcome, Melanie!Take a look at the threads, particularly the 'Just finished, just started' thread as people will mention the books they've read and whether or not they enjoyed them.
Author threads keep you up to date on what people here are publishing.
The 'Morning' thread is a good place to check in for general chat. Once you get to know people, the place seems friendlier. :)
I guess I knew I was gay from early childhood, although I didn't think of it those terms back then in the 1950s. Such was the legal and social pressure not to be that like many of my generation, it was buried and suppressed. This really wasn't a good idea, but I don't want to say too much more here because my book [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...] is basically my autobiography.More at http://www.thecloudsstillhang.com
Hello! I am a newbie just published on Kindle a couple of weeks ago. I thought my book was contemporary women's fiction but others are calling it a psychological thriller & hey readers know best! I actually broke my ankle and had to have it filled with metal 3 weeks ago which has been amazing for my reading & writing time but has also allowed an obesession with the refresh button on the KDP report page! One of the great bonuses of becoming an Indie writer has been to discover some other brilliant 'unknowns'. Love to read most things apart from fantasy/ historical.
