I'm half way through now I have been taking this book a little slower than usual. It's gotten a lot more interesting now that he's at the university. Having a hard time deciding what I think of Kvothe. I both like him and find him frustrating and a little full of himself. It's a great story none the less.
Ryan wrote: "Speaking of which, hurry up and pay off your debt Kvothe! It will be the end of you."That's the issue. He keeps paying it off, then dipping in deeper. And then REALLY deeper.
Like most young men, he hasn't the faintest clue how to manage his money; especially when he really wants something. To his credit, though, the things he buys are mostly necessary, either for body or soul!
AND DONE. Not a bad book after all. Kinda wanted to face palm 1/2 the book through. Kvothe needs help. Badly.
What's very frustrating? I know people like him in read life. Smart, wicked smart, clever when they want to be, and a real charmer...but the lack of wisdom. OIY. Painful.
Hah! I hadn't noticed that while reading. I hope it's just the author's way of describing guys and not symbolism!
I hope it is symbolism! The alternative is for every character to have the same mannerisms. I guess a couple play with their mouths and one strokes his own cheek. That's diversity enough I suppose.
About threequarters through. Kvothe is up in the hills with his friend, investigating the incident at the wedding. I actually feel like things are about to kick off, but life has been interfering. I just moved into my new house today.
It might be an idea. This one went down well. I think it coukd be nominated as a monthly read as well
And finished. I liked it but I think I like the writing more than the story so far. Kvothe drives me crazy half the time. I think most of it is concerning his romantic relationship and mostly because it reminds me of being a 15 year old boy.
I'll eventually get to Wise Men Fear, but it's pushed WAY down in my schedule now. But this was a fun Buddy Read though. Thank you all.
Has anyone else already started Wise Mans Fear? I was going to hold off but started it last night /:
I was thinking of waiting until March, to see if the club will do it, or maybe another buddy read. It was just too irresistible for you, I guess!
I honestly had all intentions of waiting a bit especially since there seems to be no signs of a firm release date for the third book but I couldn't stop thinking about how torn I am between hating and liking Kvothe and had to see if the second book would make me shift to one side.

Finished! I won't post any spoilers here but I just want to say that I loved this book. Definite book hangover and I'll be picking the next one up soon.
Am I the lone straggler? I'm nearly done. Hopefully finished tomorrow night if I can resist staring dumbly at the Super Bowl for four hours.

I am definitely down for nominating it for next months read.
This was my first read-a-long that I've participated in on GR, it was fun. :)

Well if so many of you are up for nominating/voting for it, then it stands a pretty good chance! :)
Rothfuss writes well but every now and then the little things jar me. As well as the shared mannerism of every character running their hands through their hair, I'm finding the verb 'to drink off' being used far too often. Far more than just 'to drink'.Probably just a case of small things amusing...
And I'm a laggard no longer! I will definitely read the next one. In fact I feel I don't have a choice.
I found that a lot of the secondary characters had similar, snarky voices, esp. at the university. But it didn't bother me too much.
