Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Hi!

Not sure if I'm doing this right (let me know gently if not!), but I've had The Name of the Wind sitting on my kindle for several weeks. Anyone want to buddy read it with me starting next week, or later if that is too soon?

Feel free to jump in the conversation, anyone who has already read it!

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
I just bought it as well and should be starting in the next two weeks.

message 3: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) | 364 comments I'll gladly discuss with you, it's one of my favourite books! I don't have the time for a re-read, though.

message 4: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Awesome! The more the merrier.

@Paul: do you need me to push the start date back? Let me know what works for you.

message 5: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
I've two books to finish but can start next week

message 6: by Ryan (new)

Ryan I'll be reading it this year but can't start until about the 16th if you guys can wait. I was going to comment in the existing threads anyway so I won't be gutted if you start without me.

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
16th as a start coukd suit. I can read the new Brandon Sanderson first ☺

message 8: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments The 16th is fine - I think I have some work I should be doing....

I won't be re-reading as I don't have access to it at the mo, but I will join in conversation. Love that book! :)

message 10: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Sounds great!

message 11: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Thanks for organising Leigh

message 12: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Forgive my passive voice but The Name of the Wind has been shuffled to the top of my to-read-in-2015 shelf. That makes it all official.

message 13: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
It was high on mine anyway but this is the added push needed

message 14: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments My pleasure! I needed some external motivation to get this one started, too. And I have very high expectations....

message 15: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Its been recomended quite highly to me so hoping it lives up to it ☺

message 16: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 150 comments I will discuss it with you all as I can. I have read it and would like to see everyone Else opinions and also compare them to my own.

message 17: by Kevin (new)

Kevin I read this late last year and really enjoyed it. I moved directly on to the sequel afterwords and it definitely met my expectations. I can't wait until Doors of Stone is released! There are so many questions that need resolving.

message 18: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Looking forward to the discussions - everyone (and their honest opinion) is welcome!

message 19: by Tokio (new)

Tokio Myers (tokibear) | 10 comments I'll join, I tried to read it last year but other things stopped me.

message 20: by Joey (new)

Joey (mostlyjoe) | 178 comments I might be in for it. I'm working on Steelheart but I can pick it up here shortly.

message 21: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Groovy!

(to steal a quote from Ash in Army of Darkness)

message 22: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Never a bad time to quote Ash ☺

message 23: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Don't get me started....

Shop Smart .......

message 25: by Joey (new)

Joey (mostlyjoe) | 178 comments I prefer "My Name is Bruce" these days.

message 26: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments ...shop S-Mart

message 27: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments I also have a special place in my heart for Bubba-HoTep.

I went to the book signing for Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way and theatre premiere of Man With the Screaming Brain. It was so epic!
Bruce Campbell is as awesome in person as he is on film.

But anywho, I would be down for doing the buddy read on this as well.

message 29: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Well today's the 16th, however my wife and kid fly to NZ tomorrow afternoon so I'm spending the remaining time with them. They'll be away for two weeks though so I'll get plenty of reading done. Starting tomorrow night.

By all means start without me. I will certainly catch up.

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments @Hybrid - how totally cool! Buddy read starts today, and it's great to have you (fans of Bruce are totally welcome here!).

@Ryan - No problem, I'm sure you'll get lots of pages done with the extra calm and quiet on the home-front!

message 31: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Well, I have to admit, I jumped the gun and got started late last night. I'm in love with his writing style or 'voice' already - engaging and lyrical without ever being heavy.

Finished the first chapter and all I have to say so far is: (view spoiler)

I'm looking forward to this a while. Its been heavily recommended . I got the Gollancz yellow 50th anniversary edition for 5 euro which is quite the bargain for a big hardback.
I should get to start later today .

50th Anniversary of what?

message 34: by Rinn, (Retired mod) Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
Of Gollancz books :)

message 35: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 150 comments I'll wait until you all get a little more into the book to state my unpopular opinions on the main character and why he is untrustworthy and... I'll just wait.

message 36: by Joey (new)

Joey (mostlyjoe) | 178 comments Okay. I'll start digging into this book as soon as I finish Firefight this weekend.

message 37: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
As Rinn said Its Gollancz . They issued a set of greats Scifi /Fantasy books in their classic yellow design for the anniversary.

message 38: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Chakara, I know exactly what you mean with the protagonist. I didn't have trouble with him but I know exactly where you are coming from. I'll wait until it's fairly well into it to comment further as well.

message 39: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments Yeah, that 50th anniversary thing confused me, too. I was worried that there was some other book with the same title written 50 years ago until I googled the whole thing. Sounds like a great deal for a hardback!

@Chakara, thanks for waiting! :)

message 40: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Rinn got a better deal than I did. She got a set of them for next to nothing

message 41: by Rinn, (Retired mod) Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
Definitely keep an eye out for that set coming back in stock if you want even just ONE of those books :o

message 42: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

I was still happy for a fiver ☺

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 150 comments Paul wrote: "As Rinn said Its Gollancz . They issued a set of greats Scifi /Fantasy books in their classic yellow design for the anniversary."

This is where the confusion came in I don't know who Gollancz is but now I'm guessing it's a publishing house.

message 44: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Its one of the big scifi and fanyasy publishers . Orion now owns them

message 45: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 150 comments Paul wrote: "Its one of the big scifi and fanyasy publishers . Orion now owns them"

I know Orion I don't know Gollancz never heard of it. I'm guessing its more international.

message 46: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
A London based one originally ☺

message 47: by Rinn, (Retired mod) Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
Yup, Gollancz is the SFF imprint of Orion.

message 48: by Leigh (new)

Leigh Stuart | 168 comments So did any other first-time readers manage to start? It's another cold, grey day here in Switzerland. I'll be hitting my sofa pretty soon with kindle and coffee in hand!

message 49: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Just got back from dropping my girls at the airport, and hope to have City of Stairs finished before bed. The Name of the Wind is next up.

message 50: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
I will definitely start this afternoon.
